Subject: RE: BS: arrest of George Wright From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Sep 11 - 01:46 PM Sorry Mike but I really didn't expect any better of Thatcher. And I can't see much excuse for it. She's educated, she's not from a deprived background. I think it was perfectly obvious that decent kids from decent families were being sucked into the vortex of violence. They desperately needed help - not abuse. |

Subject: RE: BS: arrest of George Wright From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Sep 11 - 09:33 AM It was the times and the circumstances - that's were the similarity to the IRA lies. If you were working in in an inner city school like I was - the black kids in England caught a whiff from across the Atlantic of what the Panthers and SLA and all those groups were giving out. In the USA the call to arms must have been deafening in the ghettoes. In much the same way - Irish parents were approaching Thatcher - a few years later and saying - look our children are joining paramilitary groups and getting involved - we are not crimiinals, we don't want this happening to our children - but of course they drew a blank with that heartless bitch, Thatcher. Read of George Jackson's visits from his Dad, weary and broken with the whols situation, when he was in prison. There is little in the human condition that cannot be comprehended with a little empathy and compassion. |

Subject: RE: BS: arrest of George Wright From: Musket Date: 29 Sep 11 - 07:49 AM Without detracting from the rights and wrongs of this case Al, I don't think the UK government felt IRA prisoners to be worthy of a pardon, just that a pardon was a way to move the peace process forward... |

Subject: BS: arrest of George Wright From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Sep 11 - 05:57 AM I would urge people to read or re-read 'Soledad Brother' by George Jackson to get a flavour of the times when these crimes were committed. There was a civil war on (admittedly unacknowledged by the US government). If IRA man are worthy of a pardon, then this man is much more so. |
