Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 03 Dec 11 - 03:19 PM kat, that's very interesting. I wonder if you've got different catnip to the stuff I grow? I grow Nepeta, but a smallish dwarf variety which doesn't droop all over the path like the larger ones. I've had Siamese for thirty years or more, minimum of three at a time, and never have I known a single one who was interested in the Weed. But my British Shorthairs always went mad for the stuff. I've always assumed it was because Siamese are different in some way. The Brits even used to rub the poor plants in the Spring, just as the tiny shoots emerged, killing a lot of it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: katlaughing Date: 03 Dec 11 - 12:14 AM Eliza, all my Siamese have always loved it. The one I have now, Kipling, cried at the door, from inside, every day during the growing season, wanting me to bring him a couple of leaves whenever I took the dog out and back in. He would get very insistent. Even now, he demands his "weed," but alas, it is all dried stuff now...not nearly as good as the fresh! |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: Little Robyn Date: 02 Dec 11 - 04:40 PM Hey that Wiki thing says it can be used for humans - I didn't imagine it! I chewed a leaf of it - tasted slightly bitter. Robyn Humans Catnip has a history of human medicinal use for its soothing properties. It has also been known to have a slightly numbing effect. The plant has been consumed as a tea, juice, tincture, infusion or poultice, and has also been smoked. |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 02 Dec 11 - 03:18 PM LOL! Would I then become delirious, drooling and with a big smile on my face, gnu? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: gnu Date: 02 Dec 11 - 03:00 PM "not rolling on the leaves, but rubbing them and sniffing" Ya gotta roll THE leaves fer them to have any effect. Bobert could probably teach ya how to roll leaves. |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 02 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM Siamese cats aren't affected by catnip. British ones are. I've had British shorthairs delirious after rolling on the leaves, drooling, big smiles on their faces. Have tried it myself, (not rolling on the leaves, but rubbing them and sniffing) but sadly, no effect. |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: JennieG Date: 01 Dec 11 - 10:36 PM Fancy that.....I never knew that catnip affected kitties by heredity! Certainly explains why our two Ozzie cats aren't interested. Bees like it though....even Ozzie bees. Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: Jeri Date: 01 Dec 11 - 07:46 PM Here's a WiPedia thingie on Catnip, where I learned that 1) It's NOT related to cannabis, 2 only half to two thirds of cats react to it, it's genetic, and a lot of Australian cats aren't affected, and 3) it's got nepetalactone in it which, when distilled, may be 10 time more effective in repelling mosquitoes than DEET. You're gonna need that up in the tree. |

Subject: RE: BS: Me Thinks We Could Use Some Catnip... From: Jeri Date: 01 Dec 11 - 07:11 PM I don't think catnip has any psychoactive cat drugs--I just think they really like it and don't have many hangups about acting goofy anyway. |
