I would feel better if some of the perps of this recession were rounded up, tried and thrown into jail, remember some of these financial packages were put together by people who new they would fail, in my eyes that is fraud. So why shouldn't we rail against stumping up more cash? Rich people don't pay tax they find ways to wriggle out of it I am afraid the only solution is madame guillotine!

Well as we know the crisis started in Us , so how about they pay us back the damage they left to us ...the wall street paperboys ...worth nothing are those who should give back what they took .

It would be much fairer to put it on income tax so the richer pay their fair whack rather than unfairly penalising people who are poor!

oh yes, the usual story the rich rob the poorer, and redistribute some more money to themselves, the bond holders of anglo irish bank are rothschilds , morgan chase etc, they were responsible for the situation, its their responsibilty.
if I robbed a bank, I WOULD GET PRISON, when a bank anglo irish make ill advised loans, people who have nothing to do with causing the problem to pay.
some men rob with a shotgun others with a fountain pen , But I never saw an outlaw turn a poor man from his home.

Ireland, Greece, Spain, Italy. Yes the USA too. At some point deficit spending IS important. Social Benefits have to be paid for through the elevation of taxes, or the social benefits get gutted. We in the US, like you in Ireland, are coming up against some hard facts. The solvency of a government DOES matter, and its ability to pay back bail-out loans is critical. It amazes me that people who find living within their means is difficult but essential on a personal level, think that government has a mandate from God to keep paying out without taking in.
I know. The RICH aren't suffering and the RICH need to pay their fair share, but for the rest of us to abdicate responsibility until the Rich start paying what we think is their share reminds me of a barely solvent factory whose employees go on strike because the ownership earns more than they do. The strike may land us all in the same boat if we shut down the factory, but that satisfaction won't last long.
Sorry Schweik, that was quite a rant on my part, but I sure feel better now!

It is simply a way of raising money and giving nothing in return. Over here it covers refuse collection, pavements, sewage and street lighting.

my objection to this tax, WE GET NOTHING IN RETURN FOR IT.
NO refuse collection, no bus service, no mains sewers. this money is going to protect the bond holders in anglo irish bank
the idea of rates or council tax [as i understand it] is that the money is raised to provide and pay for services, in the same way that motor tax is supposed to be for maintaining the roads
