Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: songs with same tune From: Abby Sale Date: 28 Aug 14 - 08:49 PM A little glossing fer yiz. (This may be in related thread.) I did some work on it though. I've had "Haben Aboo and a Banner" on Argo's Wee Thread o' Blue" for years and once heard him sing it. The above is about as close as you'd get by ear alone but... and with good help from Murray Shoolbraid 2. O ma granny she fartit a fytin, will I hae a feast or a fish, O ma sister's came doon the stair draytthin, may the deil set a cork up her erse. fartit a fytin = farted a whiting draytthin; Drite = shit 3. Fan I was a cobbler in London An' lived in the Royal Exchange O I shaved my wifie's commission Tae mak birse to ma rosity ends. Murray gives : "I shave my wife's commission to make bristles for my rosened threads. 'Commission' has to be a nonce-word for "pubic hair" That made good sense to me in 2005 until an hour ago. I'm reading "Musa Pedestris" Three Centuries of Canting Songs and Slang Rhymes, [1536-1896] by John S Farmer; 1896. (But I just found it a Project Gutenberg as well.) On page 7 it defines commission as 'shirt'. I suppose it's the same word as 'camisole'. I never woulda thought of that. Farmer's 1896 research is excellent and I accept it. I've already found several other phrases from currently sung songs that go back to early 17th c. English beggers' cant. BTW, Per James Dick in "Burns," Old Hewson the Cobbler was a real person and was actually knighted c.1650. |

Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: songs with same tune From: MGM·Lion Date: 12 Apr 12 - 04:44 AM Nobody seems to have observed thus far that another familiar & distinguished member of same tune family is My Bonny Lies Over The Ocean: and that one of its most familiar travesties, the student version with the chorus of "My god how the money rolls in" is predicated on the same convention of denunciation of the singer's family's iniquities as the 2nd, 'My father was hung', stanza of Dick Darby: e.g. - My brother's a slum missionary A-saving young women from sin: He'll save you a blonde for a shilling - My god how the money rolls in! ~M~ |

I must look up mechanical switch, as I had always taken that to be a euphemism for son of a bitch. |

Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: songs with same tune From: Steve Gardham Date: 25 Mar 12 - 06:47 PM Robbie, Me too, but mine's more text related. Ignore the bits from me and Jim. It's just a bit of sparring we indulge in occasionally. |
Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: songs with same tune From: RobbieWilson Date: 25 Mar 12 - 05:19 PM I've half remembered another; Hamish Imlach used to sing one about coppers who found a corpse on their beat but I can't remember what it was called. |
Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: songs with same tune From: RobbieWilson Date: 25 Mar 12 - 04:59 PM Thank you for all contributions so far. To Jim and Steve, I never had any thought of a definitive original, I just take like to see the path that songs have taken. |

Subject: Dick Darby; other songs same tune. From: RobbieWilson Date: 24 Mar 12 - 08:27 PM I thought I had asked this a couple of Days ago but cannot find any trace of a thread. Do you know of other songs which use this tune? If so is Dick Darby the Cobbler the original. I sing Matt McGinn's Big Sammy and Les Barkers Any News of The Iceberg, but I am sure I have heard others. Thanks Robert |
Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: same tune From: Steve Gardham Date: 23 Mar 12 - 03:44 PM Touche, Jim, but a text is at least far less ephemeral and often contains many clues to its origins. |
Subject: RE: Dick Darby the Cobbler: same tune From: MGM·Lion Date: 23 Mar 12 - 06:54 AM I should say, the Tramps & Hawkers & Little Beggarman families are only tenuously/distantly related, to my ear. Botany Bay & its relations a bit nearer. ~Michael~ |

Subject: Dick Darby the Cobbler: same tune From: GUEST Date: 22 Mar 12 - 05:28 PM On reading over recent entries to the favourite Irish Song thread I saw that MtheGM listed this as one of his favourites and as it was to look up the words and origins of this I came into the Cat tonight I thought I might ask how many songs do we know which are basically sung to this tune and of them all which, if any is the original. My daughter and I sang Les barker's any news of the iceberg to this the other night and she said to me " That's Billy Connoly's" My granny was a cripple in Nashville" I am thinking of going to a local singaround and only singing songs with the same tune and would appreciate any suggestions Ta Robert |
