That is wonderful, Charley! I can't help but think of the permission given, earlier this year, for a Native American tribe to catch and kill a bald eagle for one of their religious ceremonies. I feel no prejudice towards them, I just think sometimes it's better for some traditions to change for the times. There is a national center in Colorado which distributes eagle and hawk "parts" taken from accidental deaths, etc. That would seem sufficient, imo.

Anyway, at least little Harmon will be safe.

ChanteyLass-

Yes, little Harmon was very lucky. First there was a webcam set up to observe the nest, and the volunteer observers were the ones who first alerted the Raptor Center that the chick was in trouble. Then the Raptor Center weighed all its options and took the risky step of intervening to try to save the chick. They managed to retrieve the chick from the nest and restore it back to health in a relatively short time. Then when the brought the chick back to the nest, it was there almost a full day before the parents finally flew into the nest to investigate. Once they did that all went very well.

There were some nice videos taken later by volunteers from the webcam of the parents competing with one another to stuff fish down the eaglet's throat. There was some concern that he might burst! Then there was another video of the mother eagle "caressing" her chick with her beak before tucking him in for the night. Ahhh! So nice to have a happy ending.

Lucky little Harmon. On Mudcat, could we change his name to Harmony? Or Harmon E. (for eagle)?

Alert: the video begins with an ad.

Here's a dramatic story from a Minnesota eagle cam, where little Harmon the eaglet became stuck to the side of his nest and needed to be rescued by the local wildlife team. Hamon was successfully retrieved from the nest , cleaned up, and fed for a day or two but no one was sure what would happen when he was returned to the nest. Eagles are apt to abandon a nest if they're disturbed like this: Click here for video!

The minnesota Raptor Center deserves a lot of thanks for this successful intervention. And it was great to see both parents finally return to the nest and take turns stuffing little Harmon with fish.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
