I don't know the Desert Song and I've no personal interest in Operetta. As this is a Folk Forum, you may garner more interest in stories exploring themes from Traditional Folk Songs and Tales.

You should go to BrassGoggles if you're interested in sharing Steampunk angled fiction. As it was initially a fictional genre -which has expanded into a subculture- you'd probably get more feedback there. Lots of folk exploring lots of creative ideas there, give it a look:

Similarities
1. There are Riffs led by a guy called the Red Shadow in a revolt against colonialism by countries based on France and Spain
2. The Red Shadow wears a red cloak (but no mask)
3. Azuri is a mixed-race girl and a dancer

Differences
1. No racial impersonation aspect- the Red Shadow is an Arab chieftain who is very reluctant to begin a revolt.
2. The Red Shadow infiltrates the fort as a camel handler
3. The R.S.'s elusiveness is at least partly due to magic
4. The romance aspect is played down.

ETA: This story will (hopefully) stand on its own.

So I'll update this thread for significant developments in the plot and in my research into colonial French/Spanish Morocco.

Based on my love for the musical The Desert Songand the fact that I've had the idea to write a story where the Red Shadow is an Arab and Pierre (called Paul in some adaptations) is a different character for a few years now, I've recently started on a first draft of a story inspired by the operetta. It's going OK so far.
