Joe

Hooded crow and jackdaws both common in Ireland - the "carrion crow" version is very scarce here. Magpies extremely common, jays local to particular habitats, choughs likewise. The last mentioned is a beautiful crow with deep red beak and legs. If you're lucky you'll spot one on your tour this week - there are certainly a few around the Cliffs of Moher, which I know is on your itinerary. Listen for a rather metallic-sounding call from a black bird which often soars along the line of the cliffs or hangs around the fields near the edge.

Regards

Yes, John. Beaver will always by the essential symbol of Canada becuse of the importance of the beaver trade for hundreds of years.

BTW, "The First Engineer" is an apt title.

I spent many times watching beaver. Got wet a number of times as they like to splash you.

Dunno... I had the day off and spent it at "other things".

The contractor made a bundle. $12k of 3/4 plywood and 2X6 frames. Charged it to job cost. The "scrap" material went into building two fishing and hunting camps on his buddy's properties. He then had two more camps he could always go to whenever he wanted and have all found, including the rum, cooking and guiding. Just like being on a free vacation. I can still see him laughing when he told me.

I was working where they landed last night. 1984. Parking apron extensions. Had two 4' deep holes on the sides of the apron. Airport manager asked me if we could finish the job in 6 weeks as The Queen was due. I lied and we dug. They went ballistic 4 weeks later. Her Majesty could not be allowed to see construction! I said I would assume she would be pleased to see her colony being built. Didn't go over well.

Spent $15k on a plywood "fence" with red, white and blue bunting on it. I'll bet she thought that was silly. But, of course, she wouldn't say shit if she had a mouthfull... until ya get a few into er eh.

Indeed I agree wholeheartedly Mike, and how unChristian to growl in church too.

.,,.

Why, Eliza? I can never quite get this animus against her. There were these two quite nice middle-aged people who had unfortunately got trapped in unsatisfactory marriages but stayed affectionate to one another as they had been since their youths; and were eventually enabled to marry after all as it would have been better if they had done many years before, and are patently so very happy together at last. Why not just wish them well for what remains of their lives, quite regardless of who they happen to be?

Hoodie crows are one of two varieties we have in Scotland. The other being a lookalike, but all black.
I am reliably informed that in Denmark, they only see hooded crows, not the black ones.

I think what I'm seeing here in Dublin, are hooded crows - at least, they match the picture in my guide book. Now, they had birds they called hooded crows in Egypt, but they were BIG! The ones in Ireland are much smaller, but they look more-or-less the same. Could it be that I'm seeing jackdaws here in Ireland?
Lots of magpies here, too - I don't think they can be mistaken, except that ours have yellow bills in the Central Valley of California.

Pale grey ruff with very blue eyes, and you have a jackdaw.

We love our crows, they've only recently learned to get at the fat slabs (not Charles and Camilla!) hanging from the apple tree. They're huge and have enormous great beaks, but they seem quite timid. The adult crows have a paler grey ruff around their necks. (I'm not very well up on birds, so I'm assuming these are crows, not rooks, jackdaws, ravens etc!) I'm afraid I growl silently in church when we're asked to pray for Camilla Duchess of Cornwall. Not very Christian of me I know.

Actually, crows are very intelligent... I heard this guy on NPR talkin' about how they can recognize different people... He had two people separately interact with the crows... One guy yelled at them and threw stuff at him... The other guy was peaceful around them... Next day he had the same two men separately go out to the field where the crows were... The guy who had been mean to them made them squawk and carry on... After they had settled down the other man went out and the crows were calm around him...

Three craw sat upon a wall,
Sat upon a wall, set upon a wall;
Three craw sat upon a wall,
On a cold and frosty morning!

Chuck and Camilla wasn't there at all,
Wasn't there at all, wasn't there at all;
Chuck and Camilla wasn't there at all,
On a cold and frosty morning!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

What a silly idea to put the programme on when all decent crows are in bed! Especially if the chicks have school in the morning, and can't be allowed to stay up to watch their relatives on TV.

Shame.

"Farther along, from an overhanging branch, a pure-blooded Irish crow watched the Milligan approach. It also watched. him hit the pot-hole, leave the bike, strike the ground, clutch the shin, scream the agony, swear the word. 'Caw!' said the crow. 'Balls!' said the Milligan."

Aw,gnu, cut those poor royal buggers a break.

Charles and Camilla would rather drop in and drop out like normal folks, but the news media desperately need a story, and they're royal and, consequently, always a story.

I bet the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall don't get to kick back and watch a show about crows very often ...

Back to normal programming and the crow show is over... the real crows and the royal crows.

What really pisses me off is that the plane landing and such was viewable... it was daylight... it's FUCKIN DARK here. The crows HERE were all asleep when they broke in with "news".

Yeah... I am a cranky old bastard. And I am gettin crankier by the day with such bullshit.

Anyone out there looking forward to the Royal Tour in the colony of Canuckistan? So far, I am not.
