This is what the defense pulled out ot their ass for Jerry Sandusky if you haven't been watching the trial. The prosecution went with the diagnosis of SFP which is far more likely. Jury has the case now and I too wonder why Sawshit brings this up? SFP is obvious in Sandusky's case....."Slimy Fucking Pervert"

Sandusky was using that to defend apparently passionate letters he wrote to victims, and their case was that this was all he did, was write inappropriate letters, that he didn't rape all of those boys.

Perhaps his sentence will be death by a million paper cuts.

I think Sawzaw is just taking a pot-shot at people here who have the termerity to disagree with him. If you don't find him a fount of wisdom, you must be psychologically disturbed.

There are a couple of trolls here who keep trying that gambit.

If it were an APA-recognized disorder most politicians would be locked up.

I've known people like this.

One can make it sound like a joke, just like idiots try to make PTSD sound like one. But it's real. Histrionic personalities can drive you crazy as they shift from "charming" and "seductive" to demanding and hysterical.

The phrase "drama queen" should sound familiar.

OTOH, whether JS is histrionic or not would seem to have absolutely nothing to do with what he's charged with. And the APA doesn't considers it a "disorder," not a form of insanity, so it wouldn't keep him from prison anyway.

Actually, I thought the original post was marvelously self-contained. It described a psychological abberation and demonstrated it all, in one stroke.

I believe they call that "reflexive." It is an illustration of the very thing it describes.

This is another example of the blithering ineptitude of the psychological industry--gathering a mess of symptomatic pottage, labeling it with a pattern name, and calling it science. But it doesn't identify anything causal or remedial, provides no diagnosis, prognosis, or path of healing.

Furthermore it offers no distinction between acute upset, which anyone can go through briefly under the right duress, and chronic manifestation.

Why does naming something a disorder make it sound authoritarian and scientific? I think the boys who write the DSM suffer from auto-reciprocal cowcrap disorder, myself.

If it gets you paid 10,000,000 dollars a movie can you really call it a disorder.

Yeah, but in that case its the payer, not the payee, with a disorder.

Individuals with alcohol use disorders were almost five times as likely to have histrionic personality disorder.

Doesn't that description just take all the "social skills" that normal people use, and make them sound bad? Seems like the writer was guilty of excessive and inappropriate use of the words "excessive" and "inappropriate".

A gullible person of inappropriate behavior and appearance who is successful socially and professionally? I don't believe it.

I think the APA has fallen in love with the sound of its own voice.

I also wondered what the point is.

Why bother reading large blocks of copy and paste. If people want to know more, they could read the whole of the Wikipedia article that the opening post has been lifted from, word for word without acknowledgement.

That's nice, but what's your point?

I also suggest that you do more thorough searching -- the Cleveland Clinic, among others, has a very nice discussion of this.

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriately seductive behavior,

People with HPD have a high need for attention, make loud and inappropriate appearances, exaggerate their behaviors and emotions, and crave stimulation. They may exhibit sexually provocative behavior, express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and can be easily influenced by others.

They are gullible and excessively sensitive to criticism or disapproval.

Associated features include egocentrism, self-indulgence, continuous longing for appreciation, and persistent manipulative behavior [more later] to achieve their own needs.

People with HPD are usually able to function at high levels and can be successful socially and professionally. They usually have good social skills, though they tend to use these skills to manipulate other people and become the center of attention.

Individuals with HPD often fail to see their own personal situation realistically and instead dramatize and exaggerate their difficulties. They may go through frequent job changes, as they become easily bored and have trouble dealing with frustration.

Because they tend to crave novelty and excitement, they may place themselves in risky situations. All of these factors may lead to greater risk of developing depression.
