I heard a clip of Ernest Borgnine today, where he talked about having recently met some fairly young people (under 20, I think), and they didn't recognize him by face or by name. He asked if they'd ever heard of McHale's Navy or the movie "Marty" or a few others, and they all said they had not.   Then he asked, "How about Sponge Bob Square Pants?"   They grinned and said oh, yes, for sure.   When he told them he was the voice of Mermaid Man, they were all excited and wanted his autograph, etc.   

Glad he lived a nice long life and gave us so much in the way of good entertainment.

Here's an interesting quote of how he prepared for an acting role:

Asked about his acting methods in 1973, Mr. Borgnine told The New York Times: "No Stanislavsky. I don't chart out the life histories of the people I play. If I did, I'd be in trouble. I work with my heart and my head, and naturally emotions follow."

Sometimes he prayed, he said, or just reflected on character-appropriate thoughts. "If none of that works," he added, "I think to myself of the money I'm making."

"Emperor Of The North" is one of my favourite films - and, as Spaw says, almost a throw-off film. Borgnine and Marvin are both magnificent in it - utterly believable characters.

I guess the movie "The Vikings" doesn't rate as one of the greatest films of all time, but for a school boy back in the late 50s, it was definitely the most amazing and exciting film that I've ever seen.
It was the talk of the school-yard for weeks back then, and Ernest, as the Viking king Ragnar, was a lot to do with the movie's magic.

What an actor!
He could switch from a crazy-eyed villain in "From Here to Eternity" and "Bad Day at Black Rock" to the sensitive "very ordinary guy" in "Marty"
Indeed, Marty tells the story of - back in the 50s - when some guys who were going to beat him up because of way he had treated the character played by Frank Sinatra in "From Here to Eternity"!

Small but pivitol role in 'The Dirty Dozen'. McCale's Navy...great mid-60's TV. When he turned 90 my wife and I got a copy of 'Marty' from our local library. Great, great movie. Well worth the effort to see it. Then there was the scene in "From Here To Eternity' where he...well nevermind, just get a copy and watch the movie. Man, he could sinister like NOBODY else.

Loved him. RIP, Mr Borgnine. You left us awesome work.

I worked in the futuristic-looking Federal Building in Hawthorne, California, in 1974-76. It had the only passport office in Los Angeles County at the time, so we'd see movie stars in the elevator on occasion. And then, our building was used as the police headquarters in a short-lived series called Future Cop. Ernest Borgnine was cast as the police chief. I think that he's the only big-name star that I've seen more than ten times. Since I had only recently moved to California, I was quite impressed by all this. All this time, I've kinda thought of him as my movie star. I felt a degree of familiarity with him since I saw him so often - although we never spoke.
May he rest in peace.

The man lived a great life and was a wonderful actor who often made light of his own considerable talents. He did wonderful characters that made you believe and nothing marks a better actor than that quality. "Marty" was the role of a lifetime but he had others that stood out including "Bad Day at Black Rock" and "The Poseidon Adventure." Another great role came in "The Wild Bunch" which changed movies in many ways.

One of my personal favorites was once again with Lee Marvin in a sort of throw off film called "Emperor of the North." Borgnine as a sadistic and mean train conductor with a passion for kicking the hell out of hoboes......He was magnificent. Especially since in real life Ernest Borgnine was a Teddy Bear.   And let's not forget his role in "Sponge Bob!"

Saw him with Bob Osborne on TMC awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed his stories. What a sad day...............

Damn! I fine actor. My aunts and uncles, my Dad, and one-by-one the talented entertainers of my childhood are passing on.

Life, I guess.

Not only was McCales Navy one of "our shows" as a family when I was growing up, my own "late life" son and I have enjoyed many a light-hearted and companionable evening that included watching the series on Hulu.

I'd thought he'd been dead for years when he appeared in Red as the records guy... I *loved* this man. Glad he lasted so long. Had no idea he'd actually won an oscar...
