Wolfgang: Thanks - I'd forgotten you'd done that one.

Radriano: Your mail arrived safely! Many thanks

radriano,
I have made a couple of transcriptions of songs from that LP. It saves you time if you start from my transcriptions and correct them (some of them are still in need of correction). Carrig Rua is here and the last version answers most of your questions. If you want to see which other transcriptions are already here go to the Roscommon thread and I have links there to all songs I have tried to transcribe. As far as I know only 'Greyhound' is missing now.

Wolfgang

As far as I remember, it's a modern song written for competition some years ago. Historical and geographical consistency were probably not written into the rules!

McMurrough is basically correct. "Shelmalier" is the other doubtful one.

Regards

I suspect the final word is "found". "did ban" in the second last verse doesn't seem ot make sense - but may well be what is sung.

I must say, I'm not personally familiar with this "song". It seems to me such a mish-mash that it scarcely seems worth the bother of learning it. The tune would seem to be a variation of "The Cliffs of Dooneen" but references to Olive Cromwell and Fr. Murphy, mentioned in the same verse but centuries apart in historical terms - well, it seems somewhat contrived to me. Harry O

Another song from the South Roscommon Singers Circle CD.
I got most of the words here, just two unsure words.

Carrig Rua
Singer: Brenda Weir
Source: "What Will We do?", South Roscommon Singers Circle, Vol. 1

You may sing your fine songs and stories tell
Of places and scenes that you all know well
But I'll tell you now of this hill I do know
It is called Carrig Rua where the wild flowers grow

It is often I have walked it and looked all round
At places where history is still to be found
I looked towards the west and I see [Farens] town
Where the old church and abbey, their ruin are near down

I look in amazement at [MacMurrow's] domain
With his castle still standing where his blood once did stain
As I look down on the harrow where brave men did abide
It was there that the old men in ninety-eight died

I can see old Arboe and the bold [Shamalear]
Where Father John Murphy with his life once held here
Where Oliver Cromwell his forces did ban
For they murdered and plundered and ravished our land

And now as I sit here on this hill for to rest
I can hear the small birds sing in the trees as they nest
Such peace and contentment is now to be found
May those men who achieved it in heaven be proud
