Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 21 Feb 13 - 07:02 PM The cats would not be pleased to share the house (not to mention the bed) with a dog, Amos. Bill in particular is noted for chemical attacks as well as a swift left hook. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Amos Date: 21 Feb 13 - 04:59 PM I recommend getting a dog, if you don't have one. It certainly warmed my days! I bet there are jams and hoots and song circles and the like waiting to hear from you around town as well. Plus, you need to face up to writing the Great Canadian Memoire one of these days. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 21 Feb 13 - 04:35 PM I never knew you-all cared! New routines are beginning to take shape, finally. Gym workouts three times a week, choir practice on Monday and a session with a voice coach on Wednesday, errands on Friday, housecleaning on Monday, and a whole lot more cooking including baking our bread. Waiting for better weather before adding more outdoor exercise -- just walking is quite enough of a challenge in our part of town, where the sidewalk plows pass by only on days when the moon is blue. I go to bed completely whacked most nights, but not the same kind of whacked as when I still had an office job. My awful cough has cleared up and I have lost fifteen pounds since Christmas. I already don't have time for hobbies, unless you consider the New York Times crossword a hobby. |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 07 Feb 13 - 07:06 PM Ah, but you have the *gift*, Bobz ol' buddy. I'm still figuring out how to get off the kitchen sofa without an office to go to. Changing the beds and washing the dishes doesn't quite do it for me yet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Bobert Date: 07 Feb 13 - 05:36 PM I've been working on this one, Charmion, but what I found is that "something new" finds you rather than vice versa... So just be receptive because "something new" is looking for you as I write this... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 07 Feb 13 - 05:32 PM It's not often that I travel "below" the line, however I did today. So Congratulations Charmion, don't let people tell you it is hard to stay in bed in the mornings, just Go to bed at 2.00am. then it becomes easy. It is TEN years for me this year (not specifically my choice) I have no idea how I used to fit in working Five days a week. You can do it, Good Luck, JohnB. |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Big Mick Date: 07 Feb 13 - 04:11 PM I gotta be honest. I miss travelling around this country and helping folks organize unions. It is what I am. But I make up for it by singing the story of working folks, and the heroic men and women I met over the years. Good luck, dear friend. And enjoy! |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: kendall Date: 07 Feb 13 - 03:48 PM I retired in 1974 and I love it. No more of that man against the sea crap. I surrender, Neptune wins. I did feel naked for a few years after I handed the boss my badge and ID. |

Oh... and keep getting up early. There's so much to do... enjoy it all! |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 06 Feb 13 - 06:23 PM I never said I retired -- I just quit my day job. There's plenty to do, and none of it keeps me sitting in front of the computer for hours and hours. Besides, I'm tired of the current topics and waiting for Bobert or BillD to come up with something new. |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Amos Date: 02 Feb 13 - 01:15 PM I think 99 meant 5:00 PM. But never mind. The trick is to have at least several projects you want to pursue and to take steps to do one thing about them at a time. Find a teacher or make a list of long-deferred books, or take up skeet shooting ore whatever you have never had time for. Even though you are "retired" you still have to manage your target list for the day; the Great Thing is they are your own targets. :D |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 02 Feb 13 - 09:57 AM Today is the first day of the rest of my life and a Saturday to boot, so you'd think I would have the sense to stay in bed until at least dawn, but no! At the crack of 0500 hours, my eyes flew open and all interior systems initiated launch sequence. I tell ya, b'ys, it's gunna take a while. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Rapparee Date: 02 Feb 13 - 09:47 AM Look Charmion. You can do this. It won't be easy, but you CAN do it. Take a couple of deep breaths and just DO it, as many others have before you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Feb 13 - 06:21 AM Early retirement was MY preferred option - The alternative seemed to be a Total Breakdown , so I got off the Treadmill ! Never regretted it , as it meant I could do ALL the distance Gigs without hastle about time off , and the Company pension covered my basic living costs with the Gig money meaning I could still maintain a reasonable standrd of living until the AStaePension cut in . Best of luck Charmion |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Rapparee Date: 01 Feb 13 - 03:24 PM Now you can go down to the Legion and swap lies with the other old guys. "There I was, dangling from a ripped parachute three thousand feet above the ground, falling at over three hundred miles an hour and nothing below me but rocks, broken trees, and the enemy...what enemy? What do you mean, what enemy? There's ALWAYS an enemy in these stories! You think I'm making this up? And all I had was a blank requisition form and ball point pen! Anyway...." |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Bat Goddess Date: 01 Feb 13 - 01:56 PM Congratulations! I'm sure you will immensely enjoy the deletion of the day-to-day bullswool of workaday drudgery from your life. I'm still settling in to "retirement" (whatever the hell THAT'S supposed to mean) after seven months. Of course, I started collecting social security right away...AND I left the job for a full time (though unpaid) position as Tom's caregiver. I'm still coming to grips with and creating new routines and trying to find time for some of those fun things retirement was supposed to make time for. As Bill said, I haven't a clue how I ever found time to work for a living. All the best! Linn |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Bill D Date: 01 Feb 13 - 11:53 AM You're retiring? So we can invade now, and 'liberate' the Creemore Springs brewery? Like others have said, in a few weeks you'll wonder how you ever had time to go to work.... and you'll discover whether your natural sleep cycle really does include THAT waking-up time. Have fun! |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: katlaughing Date: 01 Feb 13 - 11:18 AM Congatulations! I'll bet you are going to enjoy it a lot once the weirdness slithers off. I am a dependent of my Rog. If we had Canada-like healthcare, he'd be done working. He was kind of forced into early retirement with less benefit at 65, instead of 66, so works 30 hrs/week for bennies and half-pay with the difference made up by his Social Security check. Like Doug, I wonder what it will be like to have him home full-time. It is something I have wanted for a long time, esp. if it means he'll get some things done!**bg** ATB, kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Bobert Date: 01 Feb 13 - 09:26 AM Be prepared to work harder than ever... I thought retirement meant kick back but it ain't so... It's a lot of work... I've often thought about going back to work to escape the work of being retired... B;~) |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Ed T Date: 01 Feb 13 - 07:44 AM After a friend of mine retired he told me that it took him about six months "to do" all the things that had backed up in his busy life, those that he never got around "to do" or complete. He said "then I was faced with a serious question that took much personal reflection" The question was "what am I going to do with the rest of my life". My observation is that he did find the answer and he seems fulfilled with interesting hobbies, travel, family and volunteer tasks. I suspect you may have all that worked out. If not, the may choices are rich with fun and fullfillment. I wish you the best in your next life journey. |
Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: John MacKenzie Date: 01 Feb 13 - 06:53 AM Maybe you could take up serenading cows full time now. You made such a good job of it in France, and I foresee a new career for you. They do say that yields increase, when music is played at milking time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Doug Chadwick Date: 01 Feb 13 - 06:32 AM I've been living it and loving it for the past 10 months. The weird feeling soon passes. Although I am already receiving my pension, my wife is still working to keep me in the manner to which I have become accustomed so, to some extent, I am a dependent person. That will change later this year when my wife retires. How will I cope without the house to myself all day? I hope you enjoy retirement, Charmion. I'm sure you deserve it. DC |

Subject: BS: Charmion quits her day job From: Charmion Date: 01 Feb 13 - 06:13 AM Today is my last as a minion of the Department of National Defence. This morning, I will have a sit-down with the colonel, hand in my building pass, and sign out of the CJOC Headquarters orderly room. I will not get my first pension cheque until I turn 60, so for the next 18 months I will be a dependant person, a status I have not experienced since 1972. This move has been planned for months, but it still feels wierd. |
