Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Senoufou Date: 07 May 18 - 01:53 PM I've been growing old disgracefully for years Raggy. It's great fun I can assure you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Will Fly Date: 07 May 18 - 04:20 AM Anyone who wants to live a long, long life should listen to Janacek's "The Makropoulos Case" - about the curse of living for ever. Grow old gracefully - and pray for a swift end when it inevitably arrives. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: theleveller Date: 06 May 18 - 04:12 AM People are always looking for an easy option to staying healthy and living longer but, if you're prepared to make the effort, there are already ways of doing just that. It's about adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a good diet, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. I'm 69 and I do around 5 hours of yoga a week (OK, I'll admit that mrsleveller is training to be a yoga teacher), plus a pilates class and maybe three hours or so of weight training in the gym. That's in addition to my outdoor pursuits. As regards keeping mentally active, I'm about to start an Open University Arts and Humanities degree. When I retired from full-time work I decided that I needed this sort of regime so that I didn't just sink into old age like so many of my contemporaries seemed willing to resign themselves to and, so far at least, it seems to be working. I'll post an update when I reach 100. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Rapparee Date: 05 May 18 - 10:32 PM I missed, for some reason, the emdrive. THAT'S exciting! I hope it works out. I know Clarke's Law. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: meself Date: 05 May 18 - 09:34 PM So - if aging is 'reversed', that means we can start getting younger instead of older, right? So in 60-some years, I can be a baby again? What happens then? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Severn Date: 05 May 18 - 09:09 PM As for aging gracefully, I found that the Smithfield Cure didn't really work for me, plus I smelled like Hickory Smoke for weeks and dogs followed me around wherever Iwent. Hanging upside down in a shed for weeks never appealed to me, but it worked well with my uncle's tobacco. I guess some cures are best left to the dead, who don't know better or even profit by them .....(Sigh!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Thompson Date: 05 May 18 - 06:07 PM You could have a return to school at the age of 100. You there in the back - quiet! You're here to learn. No! you can't go to the toilet, young John Paul and Kanye have gone out already. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: DMcG Date: 05 May 18 - 05:44 PM There are other interesting problems apart from population. Can a 25 year or so education be appropriate for a lifespan of 200 years? If not, how do we redesign it? How about the political and environmental decisions that currently only have negative impact after our life now, but suddenly are within our lifetime for the first time? Do we want the same CEOs in place for 150 years? |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Senoufou Date: 05 May 18 - 05:43 PM Hahaha Bruce, I could positively WHIZZ around Tesco's. And instead of driving into Norwich, we could don tracksuits and sprint along the A1067. Wow! (I've just told my husband and he's convulsed with laughter, probably at the mental image of me in a tracksuit)) |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: beardedbruce Date: 05 May 18 - 05:38 PM All good comments, but We get more blood vessels, more blood flow and the old mice, even the young mice, can run up to 50 percent, sometimes two times as far on a treadmill without getting tired, I could go for that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Senoufou Date: 05 May 18 - 05:37 PM Don't tell my husband that I may be around for several more decades. He looked rather chuffed when I renewed my Life Insurance a few weeks ago... |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Thompson Date: 05 May 18 - 05:30 PM There may be no population explosion, given that a lot of babies are born to people who are looking to children to a) replace them and b) help them in their old age. That's why family size drops when there's decent welfare and when there's good medical care for children so more chance of surviving to adulthood. Perhaps it's like the disappearing cars syndrome known to traffic engineers and city planners - whenever a street is pedestrianised or turned into a cycleway, there is a howl of horror before it happens from commercial forces, who say that this will bankrupt the street itself, and send clouds of pollution and thundering noise into nearby streets. But for some mysterious reason this never happens - the traffic simply goes away, rather than relocating. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: DMcG Date: 05 May 18 - 05:29 PM I recommend the John Wyndham novel "Trouble with Lichen" for some thoughts about the consequences of lives extended by a factor of 2 or 3. |
Subject: RE: BS: Ageing cured? From: Senoufou Date: 05 May 18 - 05:25 PM But even young people get cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Maybe not Alzheimer's though. And what will they do with the resultant population explosion? Aside from the ailments associated with ageing, there are many benefits to be gained in old age. I don't think I'd actually want to be young again. I like being as I am now. |

Subject: BS: Ageing cured? From: beardedbruce Date: 05 May 18 - 04:56 PM "BOSTON — There has been an exciting breakthrough in the science of aging. In a new study, Boston researchers say they have reversed aging in mice and that discovery could set the stage for similar results in humans. Dr. David Sinclair has spent his entire career focused on aging and now believes he's discovered a way to stay younger for longer. Advertisement "We're absolutely talking about increasing the quality of life - preventing cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's," Sinclair said. It starts with a molecule called NAD which humans need to live. As we age, the level of NAD in our cells drops, leading to DNA damage and the diseases of aging. In a new study in the journal CELL, Sinclair and his team at Harvard Medical School's Center for the Biology of Aging boosted NAD levels in the blood vessels of old mice. "Now those blood vessels are young again. We get more blood vessels, more blood flow and the old mice, even the young mice, can run up to 50 percent, sometimes two times as far on a treadmill without getting tired," Sinclair said. Sinclair says human trials of the NAD booster are underway in Boston and ultimately, he hopes for Food and Drug Administration approval of a pill everyone could take. "Just a single pill that they take every morning and it rejuvenates their internal organs and their systems so that you don't just feel young, but you actually are young," Sinclair said.
