just for the sake of accuracy:
the opening post centered on the Isle of Eigg,
referred to in certain conversational contexts
as
The Republic of Eigg,
and
its nearness to the isles of Rum, Muck, and Skye
makes it Inner rather than Outer Hebrides.

I've never been there though I've often been to the Inner Hebrides (Mull, Iona, Skye) which are culturally much more like mainland Scotland.

wee Frees most prominent in the northern-most Western Isles
there seems to be a north-south tendency in Protestant-Catholic divide[ north/south Europe, north/south Ireland, north/south Western Isles of Scotland!

Is the Hebrides also the home of the Wee Frees? I believe it is.

But from what I read about,
they are more entertaining to joke about, from a safe distance,
than to visit.

Much is made, in
human-interest stories like this one,
about how the islanders themselves managed
to acquire their island from the last laird,
and have become self-sufficient,
even providing their own utilities
(which electricity seems to come and go regularly).

The National Geographic magazine/webpages have a
vacation-travel-oriented article
about the island of Eigg.

I was going to attach the link by a post to an existing thread;
all the threads mentioning the Hebrides were music threads.
And Eigg sounds a little too, er, small
to rate its own thread …
so, how about a Hebrides thread
that includes topics outside of music?

That way the other islands can be accounted for as well.
