I was reading Moogie's missive to his staff team about his language requirements in written correspondence. It just about fell short of having to refer to countries by thier British colonial names.

Thank you, Bonzo. We may be on opposite sides of the political fence but we can agree that extremism at either end of the scale is wrong. Of course we will disagree about where the extreme is on the left hand side but let's leave that for another day :-)

I know she is Steve - I've always loved her accent (even as Titania in Midsummer Night's Dream)
I had no problems with the accent - just her use of working class vernacular, which oi thowt weere summat owerdone - for me, it jarred a little
As far as I'm concerned, she's forgiven everything because of the good things she's written about MacColl
She can come and scrub my back any day

I have to say the clash between Bamford and Hunt took me somewhat by surprise - one of the things I learned from the film

They were in my town for a couple of weeks filming. I walked my dog around the area where the filming was taking place most days, hoping to see a star or two - no such luck! Saw lots of technical-looking types, some extras, but not much else.

I’ve not seen the movie yet, but it will be interesting trying to spot bits I recognise.

Hey Jim, Maxine Peake is a rock-solid northerner, educated in Westhoughton and Bolton, did her theatre training in Bolton too, one-time team member of Wigan ladies' rugby league team and one-time member of the Salford communist party branch. She's back living in Salford now. She's a damn fine socialist and mighty supporter of Corbyn to boot. I have yet to see the film but I somehow can't see her with those credentials struggling with the vernacular!

I know what you mean, DMcG, and a bit more on the lives of the ordinary folk may have been better. On the other hand, there has been ample depictions of how things were for the lower orders before. What made this for me was how the upper echelons were shown as absolute bastards. They still are, hence the thread title. There were exceptions of course. Henry Hunt being one. One good thing came out of the whole sorry mess. It ruined the political career of William Hulton and paved the way for reformers such as Bright and Cobden.

Sadly we have forgotten the lessons learned then and now have a cabinet full of Hulton's ready to appoint new Joe Nadins to do their bidding. Today's equivalent of Bright and Cobden are demonised by the press and people are still falling for it. I despair at times!

"Mike Leigh's "Peterloo"."
One of the great films of all times for me, recently surpassed only by 'The Young Karl Marx' with its brilliant depictions of Manchester at time Engles was writing his 'Conditions of the Working Class in England' (based largely in Salford)
Not sure about Maxine Peake's (fairly high on my list of favourite actors) attempts at the vernacular, but apart from that....... grrrreat
Both films deal with the nuts and bolts of their subjects in some detail, which doesn't always make for easy watching, but well worth persevering with - I've long come to the conclusions that films such as these merit a second watching
Would there were more subjects treated as well

For me, there was something about the film that didn't quite work. Certainly there were scenes and moments like the attitudes of the justices and magistrates which struck deep chords, but when the film had ended the overall effect was not that this was an involving account of one of the most significant events in the history of workers' rights. It was much too emotionally flat and uninvolving to have that effect on me.

Just watched Mike Leigh's "Peterloo". Some liberties taken but a genuinely brilliant piece. What struck me most was the discussions had by the magistrates concerning the "rabble". I could see BoJo's cabinet, aka the authors of "Brittania Unchained", repeating them. How have we got to the situation where workers rights have gone 200 years back?

Ok. Exaggeration. But not much :-(
