Of course from what I remember quite a few of those Avon products could repel more than bugs!! Like the time my little brother went out one of his first dates. I think he used a whole bottle of that Wild Country....couldn't get near him for a week! |

An old (89) Wyoming woman I met in 1992 in a sheep shearing shed full of mozzies recommended it as an insect repellent: '50% skin so soft, 50% water - they cain't stand it!' (Apologies for the attempt at dialect, but I'm only a limey). We are getting more ticks and mozzies in certain areas over here due to climate changes. God forbid we acquire chiggers! mouldy |

In the summer in Kentucky I was quite the sight at 11 years old: my blond hair was green from all the chlorine in the swimming pool, my nose was red and peeling, and I was spotted with at least a dozen red nail-polish chigger-holes. No wonder I got all the girls. |

Subject: RE: BS: CHIGGERS From: Mary G Date: 08 Jan 00 - 02:19 AM re: blackberry picking....I know how to do it pretty painlessly...and I don't even like them but what they heck they are free for the picking here...they are the northwest equivalent of kudzu.. simple...just take your pruning shears with you..shear as you go...pick the close clumps, clip the branch and go further in...of course from each dropped branch another blackberry bush will grow so that is something to consider.. mg |

It should be very informative and helpful to "all ya'all what don't live heah in the south."* The best preventative I've found is yellow sulfer powder, usually available at any drug store. Just dust yourself around the ankles, waist, wrists and neck. Avon's "Skin So Soft" is also claimed to be effective. I know it's good in re skeeters, but I can't testify to its efficacy in re chiggers. * for those who might not speak "southern," the phrase "all ya'll" is the plural form of "ya'll," which a linguist would probably term a "collective singular noun". *BG* |

Chiggers are tiny mites (arachnids, not insects) that burrow into the skin and cause itching, raising a small (approx. 5 mm) red bump. The critters are typically picked up in grassy/woody areas, and are not visible to the unaided eye. It's typical of a weekend camping trip to get home and find that several of them have taken advantage of the free food and lodging that your body provides them. |
