Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: DaveRo Date: 11 Oct 22 - 04:28 PM having somewhere to ask "is Mudcat likely to be back up in the next few days?" Would be handy. You can ask in rec.music.folk It exists already, and no moderation is required - or possible. I don't think you'll get an informed answer, though. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 11 Oct 22 - 04:18 PM Reddit has different flavours of antisocial behaviour from other forums. Moderators are needed. Its anonymity culture is infuriating but you can work round it. Simply having somewhere to ask "is Mudcat likely to be back up in the next few days?" Would be handy. And Reddit lets you upload media files, albeit not as conveniently as Facebook (has to be in a basenote). |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: DaveRo Date: 11 Oct 22 - 03:24 PM What would such a 'companion' site be for? What moderation do you expect would be required? Anonymous posting? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 11 Oct 22 - 02:52 PM Anybody think a companion Reddit sub would work? I'm on Reddit but don't really know what it's like to moderate a sub. If it isn't too much of a pain in the arse I'd consider starting one. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 10 Oct 22 - 08:33 PM Just a wild guess ... Did things begin going "wonky" when, share this page. . FB, Twit etc ... were added to the menu? Sincerely, Gargoyle nice piece piece about Jazz in the October, 2022 Smithsonian Mag ... I keep expecting "MAX" to show up on the credit page. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: GUEST,Brigand Doune Date: 09 Oct 22 - 09:42 AM i heard that the only bits of Scottish music known to the composers were "Annie Laurie" and "Loch Lomond", but couldn't bear to listen to the thing to hear if this were at all evident. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Felipa Date: 07 Jun 22 - 07:59 PM Stringsinger asks "Does anyone know if the legend is really Scottish?" There are several legends in Ireland about islands which only appear out of the mist every 7 (or other number) years. Some of these islands are now easily apparent, for instance Tory Island since Colm Cille (Dove of the Church, St Columba) threw his staff on to the island (according to legend). I expect Scotland has similar tales. And Joan F, I love your thread title. I knew immediately what it referred to. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: keberoxu Date: 06 Jun 22 - 07:08 PM Stringsinger asked if Brigadoon is a real thing. Well ... blame composer Frederick "Fritz" Loewe. He swiped the story from a German-language Erzählung about a highland town in the misty mountains. So instead of Germany, we have the highlands of Scotland, by the time Alan Jay Lerner is done with it. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Joe Offer Date: 23 May 22 - 08:37 PM I was hoping we could use the Mudcat Facebook page at times when Mudcat is down, but apparently that could not be negotiated. If you need something, email me, joe@mudcat.org - I'll do my best to find the information for you. There is an admin "back door," but Max has asked us not to use that unless it's for admin purposes. And it hasn't been working most of the time lately, anyhow. But I'm pretty good at finding stuff quickly - but it is much harder when Mudcat is down. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Sol Date: 23 May 22 - 08:24 PM A-ha Helen, I missed your original point but get it now. Like you, I find my Mudcat Cafe link works on & off. As you said, enjoy it while you can. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Joe Offer Date: 23 May 22 - 05:16 PM I often get Brigadoon (Lerner and Lowe) confused with Finian's Rainbow (Harburg & Lane). I enjoy both. Here are the Wikipedia descriptions:
In Finian's Rainbow (1947), an elderly Irishman, Finian McLonergan, moves to the southern United States with his daughter Sharon, to bury a stolen pot of gold near Fort Knox, in the mistaken belief that it will grow. Og, a leprechaun, follows them, desperate to recover his treasure before the loss of it turns him permanently human. Complications arise when a bigoted and corrupt U.S. senator gets involved, and when wishes are made inadvertently over the hidden crock. The Irish-tinged music score includes gospel and R&B influences. The hit song from this musical was "How Are Things in Glocca Morra." |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Helen Date: 23 May 22 - 04:56 PM So, getting back to the first post on this thread: has anyone discovered the secret to accessing the magic portal to Mudcat while it is yo-yo-ing in and out of the real world? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Sol Date: 23 May 22 - 11:10 AM In my opinion, the original black & white movie with Findlay Currie was passable however, the techicolor Gene Kelly re-make with all the on-set studio scenery was absolutely appalling. I must admit, I do like the song "The Heather On The Hill" even though it's 100% Tin-Pan-Alley and possibly as far away from Scottish trad. music as you can get. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Stringsinger Date: 23 May 22 - 08:56 AM Brigadoon is Lerner and Lowe, not really Scots. Glockamorra is really Harburg and Lane (nee Levy) and not Irish. Edelweiss is Rogers and Hammerstein, not German. Mudcat is a long way from Broadway. Does anyone know if the legend is really Scottish? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: keberoxu Date: 22 May 22 - 05:47 PM You ought to hear a Glaswegian Scot slagging off Brigadoon. Their Scottish tongues can draw blood . . . |

Subject: RE: Mudcat is really Brigadoon From: Helen Date: 22 May 22 - 04:06 PM There is lots of music in Brigadoon, too. Brigadoon (film) "....Brigadoon, a miraculously blessed village that rises out of the mists every hundred years for only a day. (This was done so that the village would never be changed or destroyed by the outside world.)" |
