Yes, drive safely, and I hope you have a few fall colors turning up to add to the experience. (With the convoluted route Joe drives to get there, he may be in Maine or Vermont by now!)

I feel really silly saying this, since I spend so much time pushing people from Facebook over to Mudcat.org, but you should post this information on the Facebook page - it's an annex for events and will notify a few folks who might not otherwise know about it. The last time someone posted about it over there was when Art Brooks put up an announcement in February. If you can add to that particular post it will bring it back up to the top of the page.

Three days to get there, and three more to get home again to Stratford. Not the longest journey by any means — Joe Offer is probably still on the road — but not fun to do alone. Next time, I’ll fly, and leave the guitar at home.

If there’s one place in the world where a guitar might be borrowed for an hour or two, it’s the Getaway.

Yes, the food at camp was better, though I don’t go for the food. I can eat just fine at home.

In the past, Edmund and I usually came away with at least one new song and at least one new tune. Lacking the energy now to sit up and sing till three, this time I missed out on the most likely opportunities to pick up these gems. But I was grateful for a chance to test my performance skills again and find myself up to the job.

And Judy Cook liked my Friday evening song. That alone was worth the trip.

It went great, even with a smaller group.
And the food was good! They've hired a new chef, and there was a good assortment, even at breakfast. I ate much more than I would at home!

Several people came from New York, having barely gotten out during the flooding.
I actually had songs on topic for several workshops.

Now I'm tired.. packed too much 'stuff', but most of it was useful.

More later when I'm sane.

Getaway Covid Policy

The Getaway will require proof of vaccination, sent to getawaychair@fsgw.org. If a medical reason prohibits vaccinations for you, please contact us at this email address to discuss possible alternate strategies. Depending on the situation near the time of the event we may revisit what the testing requirements will be. At this time it seems most likely that people will need to have a negative covid test about 3 days before the event and a negative test on, or shortly before, their arrival at camp. We also ask that you bring an extra test with you as we all will test before dinner on Saturday as well. We must insist that this protocol is followed in order to allow folks to sing and play without masking. Of course, you are welcome to mask at any time.We also strongly encourage folks to mask for the week leading up to the Getaway when out and about.

Oh, Amarillo, now he won't come home no more
You don't play a trick on me, hooked him in the first degree
He'll put another quarter, push Dolly and then Porter
While he racks up fifty thousand on the pinball machine

The Getaway is less than a month away!!!

Lots of great folks are already signed up, but we still have room, so register now! We will close registrations on September 20, (Due to covid protocols, walk-ins will not be permitted this year. ) This is five days later than originally posted; we must know how many are coming by then in order to inform the camp.

Our Special Guests: Sara Grey, Kevin Elam, Elizabeth LaPrelle & Brian Dolphin, Dave Rowe, the Ranzo Boys, Will Brown, Julie Henigan, and Sean & Deidre Murtha.

To register, go to fsgw.org/getaway. The schedule will be posted soon. Please completely fill out the registration form; information from that form will be used to assign housing and sent on to the camp kitchen.

You will need to bring or arrange for bedding and towels. The cabins are heated, there is indoor plumbing, and pathways are paved. An email will be sent to you detailing what to bring, and not bring, to camp.

Charmion
You might want to go thru Delaware and avoid a large chunk of 95.
Delaware 1/13 south to Middletown
301 from Middletown DE into MD to 50
50 across bridge to Annapolis
then 2 etc. to West River
It is MUCH pleasanter than 95. I plan to still go this way even though it will be longer from where I am now in PA.

Chiming in. Carly has told me that the number of registrations received by the date of JUNE 30 is the decision point for whether or not the Getaway will happen. That's the date when they have to tell the Camp Yes or No. So if you are thinking of coming, please REGISTER NOW. You don't need to pay yet. You can choose "Invoice Me" and pay closer to the event - but they need to know if the minimum number of people will attend - or Getaway goes Poof! http://www.fsgw.org/getaway Looking forward to seeing you again!!

I have done the deed -- not only registered, but also paid.

I intend to drive from Stratford, Ontario, to Buffalo and then south on US 219 and PA 153 to I-80, and thence by various Interstates to West River by way of the Washington Beltway. This route skirts the east boundary of the Allegheny National Forest and takes me through such garden spots as Hagerstown and Frederick, MA. I reckon it will take two days. If a 'Catter in southwestern Ontario or western New York or Pennsylania would like to join me, send me a PM. If that person can drive a car with a manual transmission, so much the better, but a need to smoke (I don't care what) en route would be a deal-breaker.

Registration is now open. They need to know well in advance if they will have enough people to have the camp.
Some of you have seen this announcement in your email, but for those of you we missed, or would like to pass it on --
REGISTER NOW FOR GETAWAY 2023!! (click)
That’s right, registration is now open for this year’s in-person Getaway, back at the beautiful West River Methodist Conference Center, on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. We do hope that you are able to join us.
The Getaway is an amazing weekend-long party of folks who love to sing, play and listen to folk music. We come together in a lovely riverside retreat to join together in making music, sharing what we bring and learning from friends old and new. There will be workshops, sing-arounds, sign-up concerts, music and conversations at all hours. Participation is encouraged at any level comfortable to you in a supportive and welcoming environment. Old and new songs and tunes, recitations and stories, along with information on historical contexts and insights, have filled the Getaway, along with conversation and laughter, for over half a century; come be a part of the fun!
Although the Getaway will not occur until the weekend of September 29 - October 1, 2023, it is important that you register soon. You do not need to pay immediately, but we expect you to view registration as a commitment. We need to know that enough folks have made this commitment to come by June 30 or we will be forced to cancel. There is more information on the registration page, which you can find by going to fsgw.org/getaway scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on Register.
Please fill out the entire form. We pay close attention to what you write; we use this information to plan workshops and assign rooms.
If you have visited our registration page earlier, please note that our covid protocols have been updated.
We look forward to to seeing you on the banks of the West River!
On Behalf of the Getaway Committee,
Carly Gewirz & Dean Clamons, Getaway Co-Chairs

Hoping to lure Joe Offer to heading through Cleveland on his trek home. Singing by Lake Erie is usually a lovely thing to do in early October. (well actually, lovely from the rare April clear days to the late October warm days)

Got other plots in mind for the Getaway...

I am so glad that you plan to come to the Getaway, Charmion! A backroads trip can be very rewarding. Do you know anyone who might enjoy the trip and the Getaway, who might share the journey,? If not for the whole trip, you might, depending on your route, arrange to pick someone up along the way.

Joe, do you travel alone on your long-haul drives?

Without Edmund to keep me company, I find my driving stamina has declined rather drastically. My current cunning plan is to take my time and stay off autoroutes (high-speed superhighways) as much as possible.

Fantastic, Joe! Dean and I really look forward to seeing you again. We have driven cross-country many times, but have never managed to do the whole trip off of the highways. Two-lane back roads can be so much more fun, and definitely enlightening in all sorts of ways! Enjoy!

Subject: FSGW Getaway 2023 - Update
From: Carly
Date: 02 Feb 23 - 05:54 PM

Here is the latest information about the Getaway. Please note the pricing is a bit different from my original Facebook estimate.

After a 3-year hiatus, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington’s 58th Getaway is returning, in person, to the West River United Methodist Center near Annapolis, MD. Mark your calendars now for September 29th-October 2nd, 2023.

If you’ve only attended a virtual Getaway, a brief description of the live Getaway is in order. The Getaway is a weekend-long party of folks who love to sing, play and listen to folk music in a lovely riverside retreat. At the Getaway, we make, learn, and share music with friends, old and new. Participation is encouraged at any level comfortable to you in a supportive and welcoming environment. For more than half a century, workshops, sign-up concerts, and casual sing-arounds have filled the Getaway, along with conversation and laughter. Come and be a part of the fun!

Pricing will be confirmed once we have a better idea of attendance. The price for 2 nights will be in the range of $220-$345 depending on the number of attendees. The third night would be about $55. Registration is not yet open, but we would appreciate knowing if you are interested in coming and what workshops you would like to see available by sending an e-mail to getawaychair@fsgw.org. We value your input!

Please help us out by spreading the word! We are a community with a shared belief in the power and importance of preserving the living traditions of music and we know that each generation must rely on the next to continue and enhance this heritage. We hope that we can — with your help — reach out to a broader crowd of multi-generational peers in the folk tradition who may not know of the Getaway. Folks of all ages and orientations are most welcome to join us!

I've never been, but it might work this year. Any other pilgrims thinking about it?

Well, I’ll put it in the calendar and change the strings on my guitar. I might even learn a new song. Or two.

Definitely doable in two days. I've driven from my house near Washington, DC to the greater Toronto area in a day. It usually takes me about 10 hours depending on traffic and how fast I get across the border. That usually includes a lunch stop, a fuel stop and at least one quick rest break.

Takes about an hour traveling generally east to get from my house to West River.

I usually have at least one other person to split driving duties with.

Now I’m wondering how to make this long trip by myself without resorting to a flight from Toronto. Two days on the road each way?

Maybe. Just maybe.

THE FSGW GETAWAY RETURNS TO WEST RIVER!!
The Folklore Society of Greater Washington's Getaway is scheduled for 29 September-2 October, 2023, back at the West River Methodist Conference Center near the Chesapeake Bay!!! Mark your calendars now! Dean and I are co-chairing this year, and we need your help. If we cannot get enough folks to come, we will have to cancel, and the Getaway, after nearly 60 years, will die. The magic number is 70. However, we can bring the price down significantly with more people attending. At 70, the price will be around $360, but if we have 110 people, it will be $230. So, the best way all of you who have enjoyed the Getaway in the past ,or have thought it might be fun to try it, can support it is to make it a priority this next year, and to spread the word.
Many of us have been coming for decades, but the Getaway is not just for old folkies! We who are older appreciate and greatly value younger voices; not only do they bring fresh ideas and insights to the table, but, in a community with a shared belief in the power and importance of preserving the living traditions of music, we know that each generation must rely on the next to continue and enhance the work that we have done.
For those unfamiliar with the Getaway, think of an amazing weekend-long party of folks who love to sing, play and listen to folk music, coming together in a lovely riverside retreat to join together in making music, sharing what they bring and learning from friends old and new. Throw in some workshops and sign-up concerts, music and conversations at all hours, and the joy of community, and that pretty well describes the Getaway. Participation is encouraged at any level you feel is comfortable to you, in a supportive and welcoming environment. Old and new songs and tunes, recitations and stories, along with information on historical contexts and insights, have filled the Getaway, along with conversation and laughter, for over half a century; come be a part of the fun!
Please feel free to share this post.

I saw a notice somewhere that said that there will-be an FSGW Getaway at the West River Conference Center in Maryland in 2023, but now I can't find the notice. If you can provide information about the 2023 Getaway, please post it here. I'll change the title as appropriate.
