Subject: RE: 2025 Obit:Phil Shapiro(WBVR Radio Bound for Glory) From: Waddon Pete Date: 24 Nov 25 - 10:41 AM Although I never had the pleasure of being able to listen to his show, it's clear that Phil was a well loved and much admired member of the folk community. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know and love him. RIP |

Subject: RE: 2025 Obit:Phil Shapiro(WBVR Radio Bound for Glory) From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 23 Nov 25 - 08:57 PM another piece of my past is gone; I was a regular attender of Bound for Glory coffee house from where the radio show was broadcast during the three years I lived in Ithaca and any time I visited afterwards. I was aware that Phil kept the show going for many many years. As Wendy writes, in his own way Phil made a great contribution to folk music. |

Subject: RE: 2025 Obit:Phil Shapiro(WBVR Radio Bound for Glory) From: GUEST,Bertrand O-R Date: 21 Nov 25 - 01:11 PM I had the honor to be an engineer for the BFG live show in the 80s. I'm so saddened to hear of Phil's loss. He was a prince and Bound For Glory should have been nationally syndicated. Peace and blessing to this family and musical friends. |

Subject: Obit: Phil Shapiro From: wendyg Date: 20 Nov 25 - 04:50 AM I am sorry to say that Phil Shapiro died last night. For more than 50 years, he hosted and ran the Sunday night radio show Bound for Glory on WVBR-FM, in Ithaca, NY. A live show broadcast from the Cornell University campus, BfG hosted probably hundreds of performers during its lifetime. In one 1970s high point, the Boys of the Lough played on his show, and some of the members of Fairport Convention, who were in town for a different gig, came to listen. Phil also collected songs, taught guitar, helped run the Cornell Folk Song Club, and performed himself - often with Carrie Kerr. Probably many of you will never have heard of Phil. But his efforts and those of others like him are essential to keeping folk music alive. wg |
