Thanks, Joe. This song is so much fun to sing.

The Wikipedia article is detailed, but it doesn't mention the thing that (I think) caused this to have over 1100 shows off-Broadway -- namely that the vocalists were of high quality and were a pleasure to listen to. Madame Ernestine singing on your YouTube link is a good example.

I don't know why they spelled Izzenschnooken that way. Madame Ernestine is clearly singing "Eisenschnooken," which sounds far more German.

When I helped with a production of this circa 1970, our Ernestine sang of the "Himmelblunken Mountain all covered mit snow." I like those words better than the original (Der Dasserschtunken Mountains
All vitened with snow), which I think is laying it on with a trowel.

If you want to sing it, pay special attention to the word "the." Foreigners know it has a strange initial sound, th, which they can't really say, but they don't say "da," either. Rather it's a sound in-between d and th. If you say da, you sound ignorant.

"Puppchen", of course, should have an umlaut on the u. It means "little doll."

Leeneia sang an interesting fake-German song at the Mudcat Singaround yesterday.

IN IZZENSCHNOOKEN ON THE LOVELY ESSENZOOK ZEE
(Elizabeth Parrish)

[ERNESTINE, spoken]
Der Homeland under yout, dey is gone from me. But, dey vill never really be gone, for dey vill alvays be here, in mine heart.

[ERNESTINE]
In Izzenschnooken on da lovely
Essenzook Zee
I often seem to often dream
How happy I'd be

Der Dasserschtunken Mountains
All vitened with snow
Da Vasserfunken River
Far below

I close my eyes and see dem
All da peace and da joy
When I was but a puppchen girl
Mit my liebster boy
Vile hand in hand ve vondered
Und vandered so free
In Izzenschnooken on za lovely
Essenzook Zee

[ERNETINE, spoken]
Ya, I remember dem all. The happy faces; dos carefree places; so far away, and so very long ago. But I vill never forget da land of my Kinder for dat, dat vas home.

[ERNESTINE]
I close my eyes and see dem
All da peace and da joy
Ven I vas but a puppchen girl
Mit my liebster boy
Vile hand in hand ve vondered und vandered so free
In Izzenschnooken on da luffly
Essenzook Zee

from the musical play, Little Mary Sunshine, 1960
