Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Baidin Fhaidhlimi From: GUEST,Feidhlimidh (pronounced Felimy) Jimmy Fheidh Date: 28 Jan 09 - 05:03 AM Your spelling of my grandfather's and my own name is incorrect - correct spelling and pronunciation is given above!! My grandfather died in his bed at the age of 93. He lived in Rann na Feirste in North West Donegal. The ruins of his house are still there to be seen. I have a son Felimy living in Singapore and he sent me this site. The best rendition of the song is probably by the Emmet Spiceland with Donal Lunny. It's the only version of the song which uses the correct pronunciation of my name!! Feidhlimidh O'Grianna |

There is no word 'bóidheach' in any modern Irish dictionary that I've seen. However, there is the word 'boidheach' in Scots Gaelic that does mean 'pretty'; but, there is no fada on the 'o'. It could very well that 'bóidheach' is the same word as 'boidheach'. My teacher, who had a masters degree in the Irish language, researched the word and 'silly' or 'foolish' was the translation that she settled on." It is not in all of the smaller dictionaries but is in Dineen as beautiful or pretty. Remember that Gola and Tory are in the Gaoth Dobhair and Cnoc Fola area and the Irish spoken there is Ulster Irish which is a bit closer to Scots Gaelic than Munster or Connaught Irish. A couple of native speakers from the Teileann - Gleann Cholm Cille area have told me that the Irish in Tory can be tough even for them as native Ulster speakers. Also, givin that all of the other adjectives describing the little boat are positive a more positive translation makes sense. Besides, for foolish or silly Donegal speakers would likely use "amaideach". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Baidin Fhaidhlimi From: GUEST,Séimí Beag Date: 13 Feb 00 - 09:38 AM I'm afraid your Irish teacher is going to have to buy a new dictionary. See "Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla" by Dinneen, page 101. In many respects this dictionary has more to offer than Ó Dónaill's. You speak of your teacher in the past tense. I hope that she is still with us. Feidhlim's little boat went to Gola,
A tiny little boat, a lively little boat,
Feidhlim's little boat went to Tory,
A tiny little boat, a lively little boat,
Feidhlim's little boat crashed on Tory,
A tiny little boat, a lively little boat, |
