A terrific sacred dong. I remember hearing this old gospel song years ago. It had a counter melody which was sung against the refrain.

Is there any way to write both refrains, against each other, so that it would show how each part is sung in relation to the other?

Sourdough

Don't forget the 30s version by Bill and Charlie, the Monroe Brothers, on Feast Here Tonight, Bluebird LP AXM2-5510, 1975.

There is also a nice version available by The Country Gentlemen ~~ it has been released on CD, but at the moment I cannot recall which one.

Monroe recorded this is 1954 with Charlie Cline on lead. Charlie, the bass singer, sang lead as high as he could so that Monroe could sing bass. It is written by Wilber Jones and Bill said that he first heard it in the community singing schools and was the first to bring it to Nashville. There is a truly wonderful instrumental version by Kilby Snow on autoharp on Mike Seeger's recent compilation 'Close to Home' Smithsonian/Folkways SF CD-40097.

HE WILL SET YOUR FIELDS ON FIRE

There's a call that rings from the throne.
It springs to those have gone astray,
Saying come ye men and your load of sin
There at the altar lay.
You don't seem to heed, for the chain of greed
Still crushes your desire.
Be assured, my friend, if you still offend,
He will set your fields on fire.

CHORUS: If you don't from sin retire,
He will set your fields on fire.
You have heard Jesus call,
And in death your soul must fall,
But, my friend, if you desire,
You may join the Heavenly choir,
And rejoice with Him free from every sin
When He sets this world on fire.

You have heard His voice, seen the soul rejoice
That trusted in His grace.
You have blushed with sin as He knocked within,
But still you hide your face
From the blessed Lord and His own true word,
But still you say retire.
Leave the downward path; kindle not his wrath
Or He'll set your fields on fire. CHORUS

Take a friend's advice: make the sacrifice.
Completely turn from sin,
Taking up the cross, counting earth as dross.
Let Jesus live within.
When temptations come, keep on facing home.
To Satan never hire,
But rejoice and pray on the last great day
When He sets this world on fire. CHORUS
