The band Ossian plays this tune but there are more verses. And a tune at the end which I do not know the name of.

Anyone have more lyrics (the Scottish words are hard translate) or the name of the tune at the end ?

Many thanks and many beers to you!

MMario's link tune is the same as the one in the Scots Musical Museum. Believe me, it does fit the words if you try it. Metchosin: yes, I'm very interested in your records. It's a very good idea to put old 78s on tape, as I know to my cost! Mind you, some of the tapes I made thirty years ago are getting a bit dodgy these days...

Joe - I tried it, it might be tricky, but yes I think the words would fit to the tune.....with a little fudging. I haven't loaded it into noteworthy to look at it yet....but I think it could be done....

meanwhile, I'll take a look for to see if I can find others....

Well, now I'm confused, you guys. Can you link me to the exact tune that fits these words, and not confuse me with the facts, please? The tune MMario linked to doesn't seem to fit the words - or does it?

Oops--not in the first ed. of Herd, but in 1776, vol. 2. I may as well paste in the entry from my Census of Scottish Songs [he said proudly], to wit:
Bide Ye Yet Jig [the tune, that is, used for dancing] Royal Sc Country Dance Soc book V, 8 (F/Dm), for dance "Fly Not Yet"; from Surenne. As for the song:
BIDE YE YET (Gin I had a wee house and a cantie wee fire) Herd (1776), II.179. 3x4 lines + cho. (begins "And byde ye yet") [first appearance of words]. Hecht Herd MSS. 212 (no. XCV). Words and m. in The Musical Miscellany (Perth, 1786); next in Scots Musical Museum I (1787), 98 (#97). [Key F, 6/8]; Brown & Pittman Songs of Scotland (1877), I.102 (+ m.); Chambers Scottish Song Prior to Burns 418 (+ m.); G.F.Graham Sc. Songs I.14 (+ m.). 3x4 lines + cho. (begins "Sae bide ye yet, an' bide ye yet"). Diack New Scottish Orpheus II.20 (+ m.).

That might be enough for you to look about for. Cheers Murray

Murray, I forgot to mention that the box contained some recordings of Joe Corrie's Players doing A Miner's Saturday Night, the Shilling a Week Man and the Sleep In, as well.

Murray, I don't know if you might be interested or not, but I just received a gift of a box of old 78 RPM records of Scottish folk dances and songs, which I am currently taping for my brother.

One of the records has additional lyrics to that in the DT for Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. I'll also have to check again on a previous thread to see if the recording of The Bonnie Wee Window is the same as your posting of the lyrics.

Would you like me to send a tape over of what I have?

A tune called "Bide ye yet" is in two collections of Scottish music of the first half of the 19th century, but I've never seen either.

BIDE YE YET
(traditional)

Gin I had a wee house, an' a canty wee fire,
An' a bonnie wee wifie to praise and admire,
Wi' a bonnie wee yardie aside a wee burn,
Fareweel to the bodies that yaumer and mourn.

[Chorus]
Sae bide ye yet, an' bide ye yet;
Ye little ken what's to betide ye yet;
Some bonnie wee body may fa' to my lot,
An' I'll aye be canty wi' thinkin' o't.

When I gang a-field, an' come hame at e'en,
I'll get my wee wifie fu' neat an' fu' clean,
Wi' a bonnie wee bairnie upon her knee,
That'll cry papa or daddy to me.

An' if there should ever happen to be
A difference atween my wee wifie and me,
In hearty good humour, altho' she be teased,
I'll kiss her an' clap her until she be pleased,
Sae bide ye yet, etc.

--In Herd's collection, 1769, author unknown.

This is from Whitelaw's Book of Scottish Song (1844, repr.1875), p. 4:

Does anyone have the lyrics to a Scottish song called "Bide Ye Yet"? I believe the first verse goes something like :

If I had a wee hoose and a canty wee fire
A bonnie wee lassie tae please and admire
A bonnie wee farm beside a wee burn
Farewell tae the laddies and gallop (?) and moan

The Refrain is something like :

Bide yet yet and bide ye yet
Ye've little ken what's tae betide ye yet
A bonnie wee lassie may fa' tae yer lot
...

Any help is greatly appreciated! - Frank
