The first night Iever saw him play, I came home, got down on my knees befor my guitar on the stand, and begged forgiveness... 'cause if -HE'S- a guitar player, then I don't know what the hell I am!! LOL!!!!

Maybe one day I'll get good enough to figure out his song "The First Ride" just because it's the happiest instrumental song -I've- ever heard!

But all that still doesn't help me with the chord request that this post started off as?!?! LOL!!!!!

Clinton if you ever get impressed by watching a guitarist, if you ever get the chance, go and see Chris Newman that Alan mentioned. He once performed in one of our local folk clubs with Maire NiCatheseigh. They both had me spellbound. As for the guitar playing, I kept on having to get closer to see what he was doing as I couldn't believe that he was playing all the notes that he was and so cleanly...

Well... thanks folks... But the wav I have, the midi I avoid like the plague and sitting down with the CD has proved fruitless which is the only reason why I posted here... Hoping that one of the brave souls here would be able to help....

And when I have seen Eric play this song, his chord changes are wicked fast and freaky wierd!! I haven't much experience playing up the neck except simple bar chords and bone-head power chords... so this has got me stymied...

So, anyone else???

Having listened to the Python Site (Thanks for the pointer!), I reckon it's played in Bflat, which makes it more interesting to play, though you could cop out and transpose it into A to make it easier. Just busking you can get away with A, A7, D, E and E7. I'm about to add it to my repertoire, so if I get round to it, I'll post a fuller version in due course.

"Buddy can you spare a dime" is a good guitarist's challenge - I recall Chris Newman doing a storming version. For another, dig out Peter Paul and Mary's "Whatshername" from Album 1700. It's a really elegant descending sequence that's quite straightforward when you suss it out.

I just heard yesterday (Fresh Air/National Public Radio) that Eric Idle has just released a CD called something like "Eric Idle sings songs of Monty Python" It won't help with chords, of course, but it might help with lyrics to some of the other songs we're all half-hearing in our heads. Also, I believe that Faith Petric has the universe song on one of her recordings (I'm not at home, so I can't check for sure. The title is something like "hen did we have broccoli?" You could write her at 885 Clayton Street, San Fransisco, California 94117). And I think she's going tto be at the Old Songs Festival in upstate New York``in June.

Love that song. If ever someone asks me about the Milky Way (How many stars are in the Milky Way?) I always run that song through my head and get access to the figures...makes me sound smart! hahaa

The midi of The Galaxy song. Doesn't give you any tips as to chord progressions up the neck or otherwise, but again, it's a measure of reference. You could spend hours in there.

If it's not the song, there are sound clips from the film and other famous sketches. It will take you off the subject in hand, but I think everybody could do with a visit to this site whenever people and places get you down.

Co-incidentally my 'Exit Windows' sound file on the home computer is the signature tune from the 'Flying Circus'. It gives the shutdown a touch of dignity.

AC has a good point, but some songs are diabolical in their complexity. The old E Y Harburg classic "Brother (Buddy) Can you Spare a Dime" gave me fits as well AC. I first heard the Bing Crosby recording from my folks record collection and the tune just stuck in my mind. It was written for a Broadway show in the twenties and was apparently a HUGE seller. I next heard Fred Hellerman's fantastic version with the Weavers and didn't have a clue what the chords were! I sat with that sucker for hours and hours trying to figure it out...and when I finally found the sheet music...it was nothing like I'd figured out. I kept my version though...too much work to throw away.

I'd help if I could on the Eric Idle song, but other than a few snatches running around my brain, I can't really remember it. I think the chords were in a logical order though...no weird surprises..like "Buddy"!

Get a recording of him, listen to his progressions, visualize where he's at, and you wont be far off the mark.
It took me 14 hours to figure out Steve Goodman's accompaniment to Judy Collins' 'Buddy can you spare a dime'. When you learn it you will never forget it.

Even better, find a video of him singing it; I have seen one or two (can't remember where though) and the few glimpses you might get of his left hand will make the detective work a lot easier.

The lyrics are easy to find but Clitnon seems to be looking for a specific set of chord patterns. I have searched but have been unable to come up with anything beyond C/ G7 type notation.

Eric Idle is a hell of a guitar player no? For an old fat comedian, as he put it the other night on Pollitically Incorrect! LOL!!

But I'm keen to learn the Universe song, with all the bar chords and way-up-the-neck stuff that he does, can anyone here help me with, I donno tab or what ever that'd be??? Maybe a link to another site that has such??
