Subject: Lyr Add: GALAXY SONG--NEW BIOLOGICAL VERSION From: Jim Dixon Date: 10 Jan 13 - 09:24 PM A new "biological version" of Eric Idle's GALAXY SONG is being used by BBC Two to promote its new series "Wonders of Life." You can see the trailer on YouTube, and read an article by Eric Idle describing how it was written at Nerdist.com GALAXY SONG—New Biological Version © Idle/Du Prez As sung by Eric Idle in BBC Two promo. Just remember you're a tiny little person on a planet In a universe expanding and immense, That life began evolving and dissolving and resolving In the deep primordial oceans by the hydrothermal vents. Our earth which had its birth almost five billion years ago From out of a collapsing cloud of gas, Grew life which was quite new and eventually led to you In only three-point-five billion years or less. Deoxyribonucleic acid helps us replicate And randomly mutate from day to day. We left the seas and climbed the trees and our biologies Continue to evolve through DNA. We're ninety-eight-point-nine percent the same as chimpanzees, Whose trees we left three million years ago To wander swapping genes out of Africa, which means We're related to everyone we know. Life is quite strange; life is quite weird. Life is really quite odd. Life from a star is far more bizarre Than an old bearded bloke they call God; So gaze at the sky and start asking why You're even here on this ball, For though life is fraught, the odds are so short, You're lucky to be here at all. Standing on a planet which is spinning round a star, One of just a billion trillion suns, In a universe that's ninety billion light-years side to side, Wondering where heck it all came from, You've a tiny little blink of life to try and understand What on earth is really going on In biology and chemistry, which made you you and made me me, But don't ask me; I only wrote the song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 15 Apr 00 - 06:43 PM John... Don Ross does that to me!! The first night Iever saw him play, I came home, got down on my knees befor my guitar on the stand, and begged forgiveness... 'cause if -HE'S- a guitar player, then I don't know what the hell I am!! LOL!!!! Maybe one day I'll get good enough to figure out his song "The First Ride" just because it's the happiest instrumental song -I've- ever heard! But all that still doesn't help me with the chord request that this post started off as?!?! LOL!!!!! Take Ye All Care Eh! {~` |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Jon Freeman Date: 15 Apr 00 - 01:13 PM Clinton if you ever get impressed by watching a guitarist, if you ever get the chance, go and see Chris Newman that Alan mentioned. He once performed in one of our local folk clubs with Maire NiCatheseigh. They both had me spellbound. As for the guitar playing, I kept on having to get closer to see what he was doing as I couldn't believe that he was playing all the notes that he was and so cleanly... Jon |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 15 Apr 00 - 12:03 PM Well... thanks folks... But the wav I have, the midi I avoid like the plague and sitting down with the CD has proved fruitless which is the only reason why I posted here... Hoping that one of the brave souls here would be able to help.... And when I have seen Eric play this song, his chord changes are wicked fast and freaky wierd!! I haven't much experience playing up the neck except simple bar chords and bone-head power chords... so this has got me stymied... So, anyone else??? {~` |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Lanfranc Date: 15 Apr 00 - 10:29 AM Having listened to the Python Site (Thanks for the pointer!), I reckon it's played in Bflat, which makes it more interesting to play, though you could cop out and transpose it into A to make it easier. Just busking you can get away with A, A7, D, E and E7. I'm about to add it to my repertoire, so if I get round to it, I'll post a fuller version in due course. "Buddy can you spare a dime" is a good guitarist's challenge - I recall Chris Newman doing a storming version. For another, dig out Peter Paul and Mary's "Whatshername" from Album 1700. It's a really elegant descending sequence that's quite straightforward when you suss it out. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Hollowfox Date: 15 Apr 00 - 10:14 AM I just heard yesterday (Fresh Air/National Public Radio) that Eric Idle has just released a CD called something like "Eric Idle sings songs of Monty Python" It won't help with chords, of course, but it might help with lyrics to some of the other songs we're all half-hearing in our heads. Also, I believe that Faith Petric has the universe song on one of her recordings (I'm not at home, so I can't check for sure. The title is something like "hen did we have broccoli?" You could write her at 885 Clayton Street, San Fransisco, California 94117). And I think she's going tto be at the Old Songs Festival in upstate New York``in June. |

I always run that song through my head and get access to the figures...makes me sound smart! hahaa And A.C., thanks for that Python site. Even the titles of the sketches make me laugh--Penguin on the Television, The Death of Mary Queen of Scots, Argument Clinic, Men's Eating Crocodile Contest, Lifeboat... funnnneeeeee! |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: GUEST, A.C. Date: 14 Apr 00 - 10:12 PM Yo! If the song is called 'The Meaning of life Song', then the 'complete' song is downloadable form www.montypython.net If it's not the song, there are sound clips from the film and other famous sketches. It will take you off the subject in hand, but I think everybody could do with a visit to this site whenever people and places get you down. Co-incidentally my 'Exit Windows' sound file on the home computer is the signature tune from the 'Flying Circus'. It gives the shutdown a touch of dignity. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Apr 00 - 09:39 PM AC has a good point, but some songs are diabolical in their complexity. The old E Y Harburg classic "Brother (Buddy) Can you Spare a Dime" gave me fits as well AC. I first heard the Bing Crosby recording from my folks record collection and the tune just stuck in my mind. It was written for a Broadway show in the twenties and was apparently a HUGE seller. I next heard Fred Hellerman's fantastic version with the Weavers and didn't have a clue what the chords were! I sat with that sucker for hours and hours trying to figure it out...and when I finally found the sheet music...it was nothing like I'd figured out. I kept my version though...too much work to throw away. I'd help if I could on the Eric Idle song, but other than a few snatches running around my brain, I can't really remember it. I think the chords were in a logical order though...no weird surprises..like "Buddy"! Rick |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Monty Pythons Universe Song?? From: GUEST, A.C. Date: 14 Apr 00 - 08:03 PM Clinton. Get a recording of him, listen to his progressions, visualize where he's at, and you wont be far off the mark. Even better, find a video of him singing it; I have seen one or two (can't remember where though) and the few glimpses you might get of his left hand will make the detective work a lot easier. |
