Subject: RE: Help: NYC open mics From: Margaret V Date: 02 Aug 00 - 10:12 PM Hi, Brian. SINSULL's got some good advice, there. But for starters you should know about the Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling (it's on the east side of Dutchess County). They have a great line-up of acts and have been bringing wonderful music to the hinterland for over twenty years now. Open mic is usually held on Wednesdays, but by no means every Wednesday, just once a month or so. Check out the website, www.townecrier.com. The website has driving directions; could take you as long as an hour and a half to get there, depending on where you are in the city. Now, the other place you'll want to know about is the Turning Point cafe in Piermont (Rockland County). They tend to be heavier on blues than folk in their line-up, but it's a good mix. In fact, a lot of times the same artist will be performing at the Towne Crier one night and at the Turning Point the next. I thought for sure the Turning Point had an open mic session, but when I went to the website (www.piermont-ny.com/turning/) I couldn't find anything about it so perhaps you could give them a ring and ask. Or perhaps the Pinewoods listing will have the info. The website has lots and lots of driving directions. Good luck, and don't forget about the Irish session in Garrison! Margaret |

Subject: RE: Help: NYC open mics From: GUEST Date: 31 Jul 00 - 09:40 AM Thanks all. Margaret, I do have a car and would be interested in hearing about those out of town venues...of course I don't know where these counties are yet, but I'm a quick learner. Talk to you soon... |

Subject: RE: Help: NYC open mics From: Margaret V Date: 30 Jul 00 - 10:59 AM (Refresh) Brian, I'm refreshing this just in case you're new to Mudcat and don't know how to locate your thread once it drops off the page. The best thing to do if indeed you are new is to read the blue Mudcat FAQ thread at the top of the thread list, but in any case if you're looking for a thread and don't see it, change the "age" setting in the Digitrad and Forum Search to 3 days (or however many days back you think the thread was last seen) and then hit the refresh button. Subject: RE: Help: NYC open mics From: GUEST,Lorsworld Date: 28 Jul 00 - 11:22 PM I have a couple venue's that seem to have jam sessions. I've never been to either of these places, but found them on-line & am interested in checking them out. Paddy Reilly's on Second Ave, NYC (212)686-1210 ~has some open mic nites & informal bluegrass sessions. Jack Dempsey on Second Ave, NYC (212)475-2729 ~has open bluegrass jam nites & celtic nites. hope this is a start for you (if this is the type music you play) best of luck to you! ~lor |

Subject: RE: Help: NYC open mics From: Margaret V Date: 28 Jul 00 - 08:49 PM Welcome to New York, Brian! If you're willing to travel a wee bit out of the city there are some open mikes in Rockland County and in Dutchess County that I could give you information on, let me know if you have a car because they'd be hard to get to otherwise. Also, if you're into Irish stuff, hop on the Metro-North Hudson Line train out of Grand Central to the Garrison station on the first Thursday after the full moon each month for a very friendly, open session in a tiny place right next to the train station. You can't miss it, it's the only place of business that'll be open. Usually gets started around 8:30, and the next one is on August 17, and it'd be nice to see you there. Margaret, in the hinterland of Putnam County. . . |
