Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Midchuck Date: 31 Oct 00 - 07:49 AM I'm confused. Someone started a NH Mudcat gathering II thread, saying this one was getting too long, but we're still posting to this one. Which is the active thread? Or am I going stupid faster than even I thought? Peter. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Bary Finn Date: 31 Oct 00 - 04:55 AM Hi Dan, were you also living or working off the coast of Peru? I think you may be the same guy that sang the Saltpeter Shanty (& very well I might add) last year & if so I'm the jerk who said that it had to've been changed around. Please do come so I can have the chance to redeem myself. There's not alot of venues up north. One nice one in Loudon, House & Porch but they pretty much stick to celtic, one next door from here in Londonderry that I sadly I don't know much about. The Boston area is a much better bet. There should be a few people here that might have some helpful info for you. If your mother or brother happen to be visiting drag 'em along too. See ya. Barry |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Dan Schatz Date: 31 Oct 00 - 12:25 AM Barry, Complicated question. I was in Charlottesville, Virginia last year, and in Penobscot, Maine before that. I grew up in DC, and most people connected with the FSGW probably know me, or at least recognize the name. I'm in NH employed as a half-time Unitarian Universalist minister and am trying to get out and perform more, so if you or anyone else knows of good venues in the area, I'd love to hear. Dan |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 30 Oct 00 - 09:55 PM Hi Dan, do come along & stay till you drop if you'd like, we'll just peel you up in the AM. Where'd you move from? Hi Maemanson, my wife (Mrs. Donovan) says she's a big girl now & her staying power just doubled. You may get her to sing a bit but you'll have to try drinking her under the table to get her to whistle & that won't happen untill well past 2AM, even the kids can do better than 2. You don't have to tip toe, you can stomp away all night if you can. Hi John, I know you & tofu, fatted or not, don't agree so I'm still thinking on something that'll satisfy your Borderland blood lust. See ya. Barry |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: John Nolan Date: 30 Oct 00 - 08:49 PM Hi Barry: The Makem boys will be in Ireland, but Liam Spain loves a session and is looking forward to it. I haven't seen Micky Spain for a few weeks - so the head count is one definite, plus yours truly. Kill the fatted tofu! |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Dan Schatz Date: 30 Oct 00 - 03:43 PM I've just moved to New Hampshire (way up in Tamworth!), and haven't been too active on Mudcat - but if nobody objects too loudly, I'd like to come, too. Won't be able to stay late, but I'd love to get to know the New Hampshire folkies. Dan Schatz |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 30 Oct 00 - 06:23 AM I didn't get much out of my short stint with the Boy Scouts but Be Prepared has been my motto since then. It just occurred to me that we need to discuss a contingency plan. I was thinking of the wonderful nights in the YTB at Mystic and how they become lovely midnights and then lovely 2:00 AM's as the music and the beer flows. Then I had a vision of Barry's wife seriously contemplating divorce as a way to get the party to move out of her living room and the noise to subside. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't want to see the thread, three days after the party, where Barry's looking for another place to live. So how about this for a plan. There are a couple of motels close to Barry's house. If we can get two or three people to take rooms there we could adjourn to that location when Barry's children come weepy eyed to the door asking for the noise to go away so they can sleep. If we are sharp enough to see the signs of a disgruntled family we could save all kinds of legal hassles in the future. *BG* Of course, this assumes that Mrs. Finn is not one of the instigators at 2:00 AM. For all I know Barry may go to Mystic just to get a chance to finally go to bed at 2:00 AM. But we may want to be on the safe side. BTW, the reason I thought of 2 or 3 people getting rooms is so we could bracket the ongoing party with empty rooms and avoid a vist from the local constabulary. I'm sure they are nice guys and all but few of the policemen of my acquaintance truly enjoy the same kind of music we do. So what do you think? |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 29 Oct 00 - 11:21 PM That's not a complete list Jeri but it looks good for a start. Deb C will be bringing Ewan along, the Haddies will be rocking the boat there'll be a few others from the Portsmouth area & some others from the north around the Concord area then they'll be those from the local singer's club in Boston & Joe Offer is making his way north as we speak & only God knows who else. Any questions out there? Directions are posted above, parking's just around the corner in the lot of the Medical Center Office bldg, let me know if your bringing anything that might require something out of the ordinary, grills, coolers, whipping posts for hobby horses? See you all soon. Barry |

She laughed and said to watch out that the Internet crazies don't kidnap me. She has been cautioned about meeting the people she talks to on the 'net and now she is cautioning me. I don't think there is anything to worry about in this instance. So, should I be worried? Should she? Am I safe with this bunch of crazies? My daughter needs to know! *BG* |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Catrin Date: 29 Oct 00 - 02:26 PM Um - Jeri - I said I would love to - but the travel from this side of the pond is a bit out of the question. Have a smashing time everyone! Llanstock was amazing. Because we all knew something about each other before, it was like meeting old friends -despite few of us ever having met in 'real life'. And the quality of the music and singing was out of this world. It is a weekend I will remember forever as being truly special. I wish the same to you all. Cheers, Catrin |

Have a reenacting & Sons of Union Veterans gig (I'm the Chaplain, and expected to petition the Almighty at least once) at Pettingill Farm in Freeport Sunday - portsmouth plan looks oh so fun... but committed here for Sunday. Tomorrow, if we can get our butts in gear we might head South; I'll wear my black 3rd Maine Regimental "slouch" hat, will be packing a Clarke "C" whistle and embarrassing the hell out of my Wife if we're there. Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 10 Oct 00 - 05:05 PM OK, I'll be there with bells on! What! No need for bells? I'll be there anyway. I'll look for the usual signs of a Mudcatter. You know, the inability to talk without wiggling the fingers, the pale complexion from too many hours at the keyboard, the nervous twitch in the direction of any computer screen. Did I leave any out? Just kidding, but I will be there. Guess I'll go check that website. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Catrin Date: 10 Oct 00 - 04:56 PM All over the world mudcatters are gathering. Travelling from Manchester (UK) to Wales for ours this weekend. I bet we have a really good story swapping after the events. Enjoy yourselves, each and every one. Cheers, Catrin |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Jeri Date: 10 Oct 00 - 03:15 PM Barry's performing, I'm gonna be there, so's Bat Goddess and Curmudgeon (The last two are leading the sing-around). Lou Killen has been known to drop in here. I haven't heard if any other Mudcatters are going. For Hugill's sake, Naemanson - GET THEE DOWN HERE! On Sun, there's a workshop "In the Time of John Paul Jones" by Jeff Warner AT the John Paul Jones house, and there's a sing around from 2 to 4, and it looks like the chanteyblast is at 5. You can sing most of the day if you want, or go to other workshops. Now do you really want to give that all up for a couple of hours of singing and 3 different varieties of potato salad? Better yet, tell the folks in Newcastle and drag all of 'em down here!

I'd say that Jeri (with a J) was being her comic self about dour but you're the only singing border boy in these parts so you best be coming. While I'm thinking (not like me, eh?) of it you might ask that pair of Spanish brothers & their friendly three of a kind cohort brothers to come along too just to round things out & make it a full house. See ya soon. Barry |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 02 Oct 00 - 07:10 AM It is with heavy heart and slow steps that come here today to announce that I will not be a cndidate... Oops, wrong speech. But I do have to say that I cannot come to the party. I am dissappointed but that Saturday is the only November Saturday available for me to open the coffeehouse and I don't dare break the chain. Coffeehouses depend on regularity. People have to know where they can go each month and I am already risking much by not being consistent with opening on the fourth Saturday every month. It is possible that Mocha Cafe will still be cancelled at the last minute. If that happens I will be there. I won't know for a while yet. |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Midchuck Date: 10 Sep 00 - 08:37 AM It's a little early for us to make really definite plans or a firm committment. There's always the possibility of a "real" gig coming out of the woodwork (remote possibility in VT at that particular point in the year, but a possibility) and we don't know if Sandy (bigchuck, not Paton) will have to work that day. Also, I think NOMAD is the weekend before, so we may be in the position of having to stay home that weekend and do domestic things that got neglected the weekend before. None of the above is to indicate that we aren't planning to come, just that we can't be sure until shortly before the date. Ergo, I don't want to commit to transporting anyone else and have them depend on us. Also, I have a sister living between Manchester and Concord, where we may well crash if we leave late - or early, depending on how you look at it - enough, and befuddled enough, that we don't wanna drive back that night. Subject to all that, Susan, I think picking you up at the White River bus terminal would work fine. We'd certainly have room, since we'd be in the group mini-van and wouldn't be transporting the sound system, just sleeping bags, instruments, toofbrushes, and cheap beer and maybe phood. Peut-etre we could transport you down and Cami Sue could get you back up to WRJ if we stayed over.... Peter. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 09 Sep 00 - 11:14 PM Susan, it looks, from Barry's map, that I may need to swing close to or through Manchester to get to Derry. What time would you need to be picked up? |

From: Susan A-R Date: 09 Sep 00 - 10:48 PM Um, about the car CamiSu, not a great idea (I, quite literally, use a white cane when in city traffic), but it sounds like late arrival would be fine, and there will be lasagna to tide us over until the lamb arrives. So, you Woodchucks???? or anyone willing to pick me up at the bus in Manchestah?? Susan A-R |

Aw shucks: just fire off a note to jsclarke@gwi.net or call 846-3940. If the worst thing that results from this infraction is a barrage of spam, it won't be all that bad i suppose. I've been asked to officiate at a friend's Mother's funeral, and to offer a few old songs and tunes... one of which, "Homeward Bound", I've just been working up from an 1861 score. Another is a setting of TENNYSON's poem "Crossing the Bar", which is really pretty if well done - and not all that easy to do! Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 08 Sep 00 - 07:13 PM Hi Naemanson, 6:00 am the morning of the bash is a bit to early but not if it's the morning after. How's about a 12:00 high noon start, that'll give me enough time to finish off the addition that I've been working at for a year & a half, just in time for the hoedown & as far as how late, this ol dog'll go till morn if there's company that'll last it out. We're asking the fire deptment for a fire permit, two of the neighbors & us are planning on cutting down a heffty amount of old pine trees. The main parts of the trees will go for lumber but the brush & limbs we'd like to burn along with all the scrap lumber from the addition, it'll make for one hell of a bonfire, always good for the instruments, no burning bodhran jokes please, & the fingers, no burning finger jokes either. Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: CamiSu Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:42 PM Gleep! I just checked and found out that the big craft show at the Shaker Museum is that same day! How late can we arrive? Maybe I should lend Susan a car with a leg of lamb in it and come down after I get done...(it's over at 4 and I can make my display small so it fits in my car along with the kids) Oh MEEP! |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Susan A-R Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:12 PM CamiSu, White River is pretty straight forward for me. Let's confer closer to the date about the how's etc. (and maybe a spanakopita would go well with that lamb, although the butter does odd things to fiddle strings.) Susan A-R (sounding almost as excited as that woodchuck.) |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: karen k Date: 06 Sep 00 - 10:50 AM Barry, Thanks. One of those motels should do just fine. Sure hope I can make it. Glad you'll be at the Getaway. Hope you'll do the Work Songs workshop again with RiB. k |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Uncle Jaque Date: 05 Sep 00 - 10:07 PM Naemanson: Actually, I opened for Killiam's Minstrels some 7 years ago at the then chocolate Church in Bath, doing Civil War songs in uniform on my gut - strung Parlor guitar, and was pretty well recieved. Well, at least they didn't throw anything! Don't do much in public anymore, but it can be fun (especially when we don't screw up too bad). Stopped in at the Highlands in Topsham where my Mom resides this afternoon for a "Social", which was entirely too sedate, so broke out the pennywhistle and proceeded to liven things up a bit. Seeing smiles break out on those weathered faces - Mom's included - just made my day! I'd like to get in touch with ye without constipating this nice forum too much, but apparantly the sharing of "personal" e-dresses and the like is verboten. Feel welcome to drop in at "my" discussion forum on Delphi: http://www.delphi.com/cwmusic/messages/ I think that this site has accomidations for direct communications between participants. I collect and try to learn / perform American music of the 1800 - 1865 period, with an emphasis on Gospel, Patriotic, and Nautical songs. Some real doozies have been unearthed and are being worked up - would love to share 'em sometime. Perhaps the "Mocha" (what's it gonna be next year? Black rasberry?) Church could be the place! I'll look fwd to hearing from ye Mate! |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 05 Sep 00 - 09:25 PM Hi Karen, here's a list that may help you, if not let me know. Hope that you are able to make, if not though I'll see you again at the getaway. LOL
Some of the Motels/Hotels close by are:
The above are about 10 minutes away & probably pretty cheap, another 10 minutes away & probably slightly a little more money are: |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: CamiSu Date: 05 Sep 00 - 08:26 AM Susan-- If you can get to Fairlee or White River I can get you the rest of the way. Barry-- Green JELLO????? I don't even bother to make my mint jelly green. Crabapple red is much prettier. |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 04 Sep 00 - 10:04 PM Hi all, I'll try to answer some of the questions now but I'm sure I'll be answering more later, so fire away if need be. It's at my house, not a field or barn but there's ample parking (for RV's too) we've always used the medical office center for parking, we asked the first time & they cared not a bit as there always closed on Sat & Sun. There are no rules, if you can stand the ride here & back with whom you'd like to bring then we can stand having them Nobody asked but we're kid friendly thought the thought of that much folk music has my daughter hunting for a getaway for the interm. I e-mailed long lost mudcatter from the coast John Nolan just the other day, haven't heard from him yet but he's not likely to miss a music party, espically when there'll be a homey from Glasgow there. Peg, I'll be inviting people from the singer's session so somehow we'll get you up here. Manchester bus is only 13 1/2 minutes from here, no problem Lamb is good though my son wonders why one would eat it with green jello. Blackberry pie sounds just as good. This is New Hampshire an infestation of Woodchucks is always a good thing There are motels/hotels close by, I'll list them further along. I hope I've covered some of the questions for now. See ya, Barry |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 04 Sep 00 - 06:21 PM Hey Uncle Jacque, where you been? I'm based in Bath and have been calling for performers for the open mike at the Mocha Cafe. Come on up here and pay a visit on September 23 at the Chocolate Church.

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Susan A-R Date: 04 Sep 00 - 11:48 AM Yes! I do believe that is doable. I can either get the bus as close as Manchester, or perhaps can hitch down with a woodchuck or two?? (as long as gardening season is over . . . ) I can over-cook that Friday as well, and as I haven't planned the menu, any requests? Susan A-R |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Uncle Jaque Date: 02 Sep 00 - 10:21 PM Ey; keep me posted, mates! We're up here in Southern Coastal Maine, and it sounds definitely interesting. Is there any place to park a 27' motor-home in the vicinity? That's a little late in the RV-ing season up here, but if there's no nor'easter or freezing rain looming in the forecast (November usually isn't all that bad), we can "dry camp" and be fairly self-contained for 2 or 3 days without hookups. Is this going to be in someone's home, a barn, or what? Anyone else from the Brunswick - Portland ME area planning to go? Perhaps we might motorpool (Non-smokers prefferred). Hey; getting there can be half the fun (Get that banjo neck outta my ear! I'm tryinna drive!)! I'd be interested to meet "Mudcatters" in the area anyway and possibly connect for an occasional jam or session. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: karen k Date: 02 Sep 00 - 04:32 PM Barry, Sounds like a great time. If it's possible I may try to make it up but won't know until the time gets closer. Can you let me know a close by, as cheap as possible, motel. My sleeping on the floor days are long since over! Look forward to seeing you at the Getaway. karen |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Naemanson Date: 02 Sep 00 - 10:24 AM I've been wondering about the 'chucks from Vermont. Now I get to find out. By the way what are the rules. Can I bring a friend or two? |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 02 Sep 00 - 09:07 AM It'll be great to see you again, 'chucks! |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: bigchuck Date: 01 Sep 00 - 10:16 PM Fair warning. You may get an infestation of Woodchucks. |

Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barry Finn Date: 31 Aug 00 - 11:02 PM Sure CamiSu & hi, off rt. 93 take exit 4 towards Derry you are now on rt. 102 east, at the 2nd set of lights turn right (towards hospital) onto Birch St. go approx 1 mile, opposite the entrance to the hospital on the left is Summit Av on your right, 4 Summit is my place coming from the east on rt 101 take exit #5 & go left off the exit ramp onto rt 102 west towards Derry, follow rt 102 throught the traffic circle at the next set of lights turn left onto Birch St, & follow above directions. I'll be more specific if anyone needs more. Hi Joe, how's the plan shaping up? Barry |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: CamiSu Date: 31 Aug 00 - 09:20 AM Barry, I trust you will give us directions of what to do once we get off the highway? |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Jeri Date: 31 Aug 00 - 08:36 AM Yahoo says 49 miles - in reality, it's 27. (Apparently Yahoo haven't figured out the shortest distance between two points isn't always the major highways.) Dour Scots would be appreciated. This should be Derry. You can click on "Driving Directions" under the map, put in your location, and get a rough idea (ignore the sillier ideas) of how to get there. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Bat Goddess Date: 31 Aug 00 - 07:46 AM The Nottingham/Northwood contingent will be there (Jeri knows the way...) What do you want us to bring? Besides our voices, of course. Any chance of dynamiting the dour Scot out of Farmington? Bat Goddess (and Curmudgeon) |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Midchuck Date: 31 Aug 00 - 07:12 AM Just refreshing the thread. P. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Peg Date: 30 Aug 00 - 12:26 PM oh, this does sound fun...thanks, Barry! If anyone from Boston is going and could give me a lift, I am there with bells on (and toting a scrumptious homemade blackberry cake and maybe a mushroom quiche)... I live in West Medford, a mere stone's throw from the closest 93 exit...will help pay for gas, naturally. Peg |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: GUEST,Barr Finn still at work Date: 29 Aug 00 - 07:35 PM Derry NH is about 45 miles (or 60 min.) north of Boston by way of Rt. 93 about 30 miles south of Concord or 15 min. south of Manchester (2 hrs south of the White Mts) about 60 min. west of Portsmouth & 1 1/2 hrs east of Keene (or Animaterra country). So I'll be expecting "catters" from all 4 corners. Gotta get back to my grind. Barry |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Midchuck Date: 29 Aug 00 - 11:20 AM Okay. It's not much worse than going to Manchester airport. Maybe 2 1/2 hours from me. Doable. Lamb. Music. Hmmmm.... Peter. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: CamiSu Date: 29 Aug 00 - 08:49 AM I guess it does pay to read everything before doing anything. Peter, it looks to be in Derry, which is about a 3 hour drive from here? (How far from Concord? It's been about 15 years since I drove there.) Let me know what I can bring, and the offer of lamb is real. I have lots of them. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: CamiSu Date: 29 Aug 00 - 08:39 AM I could provide a leg of lamb! But yes Barry, Where? |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: kendall Date: 29 Aug 00 - 08:11 AM Count me in |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: Midchuck Date: 29 Aug 00 - 08:06 AM Been back through the other thread, and am still at a loss as to where in NH we're talking about. The Boston northern suburbs? the seacoast? the lakes country? the middle of the Whites? The Connecticut Lakes? Would be interested, unless we're way east or way south or way north. Peter. |
Subject: RE: NH Mudcat Gathering in November! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 29 Aug 00 - 06:48 AM This is the substance of the plan: Barry said, in the other thread: Saturday, Nov. 18th it is then. I guess time can be worked on later but when it comes to a music bash here it's usually a start around noon or so & goes till the last one standing. Probably be to cold by then to put a pig on a spit but with this much time on my hands I'm sure to come up with some tasty ideas. I'll figure out how to send directions & a map to any who'll e-mail me for it (still a guest so I can't do the message thing. I'll post my phone# & addy to this thread as time gets closer. Those that find it a bit difficult to hook up a ride (Peg) let me know & I'll try matching you with someone. There's not a lot of bed space but there's a good deal of floor room for those that want to try & outlast some of us older night owls. Hope to see & hear as many muddcatter's as want & can make it along with some others that'll be looking for a place to kick back & make music. Barry |
