Are you proposing, Bloozie? If you're willing to strum a whole lot of guitar chords while I struggle to become a competent fiddler, let's talk.

I wanted to come back here and make sure you realized that I didn't mean that last post to be picking on you; it's just that the question was being discussed and I'm a nerd and couldn't resist it. I'm glad that you've come to Mudcat. I'm mostly into folk music myself, but the little I know of blues I like, and I keep telling myself that one day I will learn more. Maybe if we get an influx of blues lovers at the Mudcat I'll be able to get a virtually effortless education just by reading around a little.

Here's another theory as to why it's more difficult to read in all caps, from the neurolinguistics department:

Fluently literate people don't read letters, they read words as a whole. So if we see "THEORY" it doesn't click as well because we normally see "theory", and we have to take the time to look at the letters.

In related phenomena, if you don't notice mispellings in text, this actually indicates a higher level of reading skills than if you do notice them (unless you are proofreading, which is a different process from reading for content). It's more efficient to see whole words, with your mind automatically correcting them a bit if necessary, than it is to see each individual letter, and have to pause to acknowledge a mistake.

Another, unrelated theory as to why people find all caps irritating, from the semiotics department:

As Kat said, capital letters are frequently used to denote special emphasis. When you read a text, you're not only reading the pure meaning of the words, but reading "between the lines". For example, when you read a letter, part of the message being communicated is the actual contents of the letter, and part of what is communicated comes from things like: is the letter typed or handwritten? Is it on floral stationery? Is it on official letterhead? Was the handwriting done carefully or quickly?

So if capital letters are commonly used for emphasis, when you read something all in capitals it's natural to think "what is this person shouting about?".

Good for you, Bloozie. Those are the kinds of tales we love to hear. For some choice ones, when you have some time, go to the Quick Links, choose Forum Search and then Go. When you get there, type in Art Thieme, then read a few of his postings. You will find some amazing stories of memorable meetings and experiences. We also have some good ones from Frank Hamilton, but only as a Guest, so you can't search for his. Sandy Paton, of Folk Legacy Records, has some good ones, too.

In the Mudcat FAQs thread, you will also find the Mudcat Classic Threads links. Any of those are worth a good read.

If you want to send a few songs or video clips to Max, I'll bet he'd air them on Mudcat radio which happens, onlone, every Wednesday at 7pm EST-US. For an addy to send them to, click on the catfish jumping out of the banjo, where it say "Support the Mudcat" and read down through the page. You'll find the West Chester addy there.

Glad you have joined us and glad to be a tiny bit of inspiration. Jump in and have some fun with us, too. Anytime you feel like telling a story of your collecting, start a thread and let us read it, please, unless of course you are saving them for a book?*bg*

Take care,

kat

I see where we both made a mistake in the addy, Bloozcat. We were missing a semi-colon before the two forward slash lines. Anyway, looks as though you have some great videos. Let's try the link again: Click Here

That should take us right into the MSN content disclaimer page.

Congratulations on joining the Mudcat. Please take some time to look at the very first thread, the Permathread, which is teal in colour and titled Mudcat FAQs, etc. You will find loads of info in there. Some of the immediate benefits of membership is you can send and receive personal messages on your personal page which you can access by clicking on Personal Pages up on the menu bar. You can also choose the Trace function to the far right of a thread, so that you never lose track of it. It will be saved and updated automatically on your personal page.

There are other more intangible bennies, but those ought to get you started. Just for fun, you might want to click on the Quick Links, then Mudcat Resources, then take a look at some of our mugshots. Send one of your own in, if you've a mind to.

Anyhow, you are not being a pain. We all had to learn these things and we aren't big on the wearing of hair shirts or anything, so just jump in and enjoy, okay?

AND,

WELCOME, WELCOME TO THE MUDCAT CAFE!

KimC, makes sense to me. Thanks for the explanation.

Bloozie, listen, I fixed the link, but couldn't find one specific for you, just the general msn community page. I did a search in the blues music section, but didn't see anthing that seemed likely.

Next time you are at your page, if you'd liek to provide a correct, complete link, please highlight your addy of that page, by dragging your mouse over it, then go to Edit, choose Copy. when you get back in here and post, choose Edit, again, then Paste. That should get us the whole and direct linke to your pages. Sorry fi this is too elementary, but you said you were fairly new to *confusers.*

Thanks,

kat

The reason that continuous all caps are hard to read is that all the letters are the same height, providing very little visual contrast, which makes the eye work harder. At least that's what they told me in a graphic design class. :)

Dear Bloozcat/Jim,

Thank you for your kind words. It's the Mudcat and some of its denizens who are brill...everything I know of most of this I learned from them.:-)

It is fine that you mention your website here, in fact you could also put it in the LINKS (see at the top of the menu bar). In the meantime, here is a blue clickie link for us all to use for viewing it.

If you will go to the top of the threads and enter the word "pigmeat" then "Go", you will find several threads on Pigmeat which you might want to add to or at least have fun reading.

It is wonderful to hear of anyone's (videorecorders, artists and all) efforts to preserve the music. BTW, we have several members in the UK, including London.

Keep up the good work and come back often. Join up, man, join up!**BG**

dear kat,

what can i say you and mudcat are brilliant..i recently videoed dave peabody at one of his London gigs..and i had'nt managed to find a site for him on the net..which rather surprised me...so the info you,ve given me is realy interested...i also met dave last year at the jazz cafe in London whilst talking with john hammond..i am a collector of acoustic music of all kinds on video..and have recently started issuing cd from the soundtracks of my videos...ive recorded quite a few acoustic blues artistes from this side of the water...i made the last and probably the only video recording of the late pigmeat pete smith...i dunno if you've heard of him or not?

ive spent a fortune at recording often amazing but not famous acoustic blues musicians,London is awash with great talent that could easily go unrecorded..especialy on video...i dont have a high paying job to finance me....so i'm hoping that possibly at least one of the cd's ive issued might earn me something one of these days..but whatever i love the music..and recording its been fun so who cares..so if i occasionaly mention my website url on msn's hotmail set i hope you'll all bare with me..its only a modest effort, but ive only been using a pc since march this year..so i'm learning..i dunno if you looked at website when i stuck it on your noticeboard earlier last week but heres the url anyway http//communities.msn.co.uk/bluesandfolkmusic

as time goes i shall hone it and add to it......

regards

heyablues/bloozcat, here is another search result page at google.com with several links. I didn't go into them to see if any of it was biographical, except the first and it seemed to have some bio info.

If you will go to the top thread, which is teal-coloured, called the Mudcat FAQs etc., you will find info on how to join as a memeber (it's free!); how to use the search function for the song database and to search the threads, and a bunch of other interesting stuff.

Just so you know, it is best to put something of what you are looking for in the title of your thread, i.e. "Looking for info on Studebaker John." That way it is easy for people who may not have a lot of time to visit the Mudcat to scan the thread titles quickly to see if there are any they might be able to help out on.

It is also a good idea to start a new thread for each subject that you want info on. It is okay when new visitors do as you did, but you are likely to get more and faster results by being specific in the title.

Anyhow, class dismissed and welcome, once again, to the Mudcat!:-)

kat

Unfortunately, the "caps as shouting" thing is internet-wide, and not confined to just Mudcat. I would think it's better to have someone like Morticia tell you politely than find out some ways I've seen in other places.

but there is no accounting for finnickity people..we cant all be expert computer worshippers.....

perhaps somebody could explain the opthalmological difficulties presented by reading capital letters...if writing on a computer screen can be considered shouting then god help the future of human communications..and the prospects for any semblance of peace within this troubled world...

i'm the first to admit to my own faliblity..and the wearing of baseball caps the wrong way around does sometimes irritate me...but people writing in capital letter...especialy when they've done their utmost to word things politely doesnt offend me one iota...i guess thats just live and let live thats my policy....

anyway thanx again to you for the help youve given...

Mortee's mind is just fine, Bloozcat and all caps are difficult to read. Now, I am a little concerned about your mind. You check in here with a question about Studebaker John, then you sign in as him? No offense, but which is it? Studebaker John or Bloozcat?

Thanks,
