Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: mousethief Date: 12 Oct 00 - 11:42 AM Maybe we need Hedy herself to judge between us on this question, Rick, but Norm Cohen says, in Long Steel Rail, second edition, page 508, Early in the 1960s another version of the song, titled "500 Miles," enjoyed great popularity. The source of this variant was Hedy West, a young folksinger from Catersville, Georgia, whose repertoire drew heavily on the musical traditions of her own west Georgia family. She learned "500 Miles" from her grandmother, who had probably learned it around the turn of the century. Hedy changed the song a bit, ending up with a slow and moody love song, in sharp contrast to Guthrie's wild renditions with fiddle, harmonica, and mandolin. -----

Well, I'm glad he agreed with himself, but I don't see how that in itself would cause a band to break up.... Peter P. S. I believe Ian Tyson was, in approximate order, a commercial artist, rodeo cowboy, folk singer, songwriter, working cowhand, rancher, cowboy singer/songwriter, and rodeo cowboy again (cutting horses - the "old man's rodeo event," not that I'd try it at any age). There was/is a lot of overlap, of course. |
Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 10 Oct 00 - 01:47 PM Rick, Bruce Murdoch is now a high school teacher in Bashaw, Alberta. BTW, I kinda like some of the Dylan stuff that Flatt & Scruggs recorded. Although I agree it is very wierd to hear Lester sing "everybody must get stoned." From what I understand, their breakup wasn't just over the choice of material. I've been told that the biggest reason was that Earl was against the Vietnam War while Earl was opposed. Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: Rick Fielding Date: 10 Oct 00 - 12:51 PM Wow! Once again, Damn good! Here's the answers. #1. Who wrote "Ramblin Rompin' Rovin' Days"? Answer:Jimmie Driftwood, Mudcatter Art Theime. #3. Who had the Biggest hit of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"? Answer: record sales..Kingston Trio. Length of time on (European) charts? Marlene Dietrich #4. Who was THE Folk photographer? Answer: Dave Gahr #5. Each of these artists had another profession. Name it. Ian Tyson Answer: Artist..his hero was Remington. Sandy Paton Answer: Actor Jimmie Driftwood Answer: School teacher and Principal Eric Von Schmidt Answer: Artist..THE album cover guy for awhile. #6. Who was Jack Elliot's singing partner in Europe? Answer: Derrol Adams. #7. What artist was billed on her American debut album as "The World's Greatest Folksinger"? Answer: Jeannie Robertson. CONGRATS ANGLO! Thought I stumped ya on this. #8. What artist was billed on his debut American recording as "The World's greatest Folk Fiddler"? Answer: Jean Carignan #9. Who was succeeded by Bernie Krause in a popular band? Answer: Mudcatter Frank Hamilton. (The Weavers) #10. What male performer absolutely refused to put on a pair of pants during Woodstock? Answer: Ritchie Havens. (forgot about the bagpiper) #11. Answer: Mudcatter Paul Mills (under the name Curly Boy Stubbs) #13. What Blues singer recorded a Yeats poem set to music, a Bert Brecht/Kurt Weill song, and debuted the songs of Joni Mitchell? Answer: Dave Van Ronk #14. Who wrote "The Faucets are Dripping"? Answer: Malvina Reynolds #15. What band broke up (mostly) because they'd recorded several Dylan songs (to be hip) but the lead singer refused to sing them live because they were "anti-American"? Answer: Flatt and Scruggs. T'is as Mudcatter Gern said, but when you hear Lester singing "Everybody must get stoned" and Buffy's "Universal Soldier", you can see where selling your soul for "filthy lucre" can get you. Lester took the high road on this for the rest of his life, but according to the book on him "The Good Things Outweigh The Bad", Louise Scruggs got their price up from 200 bucks a night to 2000(!) almost instantly! Lester should have put his foot down BEFORE the recordings. He also said that Earl's kids were "long haired dope smokers". Those last two Flatt and Scruggs albums may be the worst records ever produced in my opinion. Thanks for participatin' folks. Sorcha m' dear, don't feel bad. I have NO IDEA how I remember this stuff! But I do. Rick |

Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: GUEST,John Hill Date: 10 Oct 00 - 12:09 PM Is "Gern" in suggesting Trini Lopez for #3 getting muddled up with "If I had a hammer" the old Weaver's song that was later recorded by PP&M and later very successfully by Trini Lopez. #11 ... The first I remember this one was by The Kingston Trio in the 50's .. I don't remember anyone else doing it as a single. It was on LP by PP&M and no doubt others too. |
Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: mousethief Date: 10 Oct 00 - 11:58 AM #3 Kingston Trio. PP&M never charted with this. #7 Melanie #11 was written by Trad. It's an older song (from perhaps the 1890's) and has gone under various titles, including 900 miles, 1000 miles, 200 miles, etc. etc. See "Long Steel Rail" by Norm Cohen.

Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: Gern Date: 10 Oct 00 - 09:28 AM #15 correctly identified as Flatt and Scruggs. Columbia and Louise Scruggs forcefed Dylan songs to Lester, in bid to be a "folk act" and Lester growled his way thru clunkers like "Mama You Been on My Mind." Yucch! #3 might just be Trini Lopez. Other questions have already been answered or are simply too obscure for me. |

Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 10 Oct 00 - 09:09 AM #1. Who wrote "Ramblin Rompin' Rovin' Days"? (hope I got that title right!) Bruce Murdoch. The correct title is just "Rompin', Rovin' Days." #2. What artist wrote "On the Wilderness Road"? What artist had an album with that title? #3. Who had the Biggest hit of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"? Kingston Trio. #4. Who was THE Folk photographer? David Gahr. I'm sure one of his most forgettable moments came in 1977 when he took a few shots of me. #5. Each of these artists had another profession. Name it. Ian Tyson - artist, rodeo cowboy Sandy Paton - record producer Jimmie Driftwood - high school teacher Eric Von Schmidt - artist #6. Who was Jack Elliot's singing partner in Europe? Derroll Adams #7. What artist was billed on her American debut album as "The World's Greatest Folksinger"? ? #8. What artist was billed on his debut American recording as "The World's greatest Folk Fiddler"? Who wrote the song "500 Miles"? Who had a huge Country hit with it? Hedy West. Bobby Bare. BTW, John Phillips once told me that he co-wrote "500 Miles." #12. Who was Stan Rogers' lead guitarist? Sometimes it was Curly Boy Stubbs (Paul Mills), sometimes Garnet Rogers. #13. What Blues singer recorded a Yeats poem set to music, a Bert Brecht/Kurt Weill song, and debuted the songs of Joni Mitchell? Dave Van Ronk. #14. Who wrote "The Faucets are Dripping"? Malvina Reynolds. #15. What band broke up (mostly) because they'd recorded several Dylan songs (to be hip) but the lead singer refused to sing them live because they were "anti-American"? Subject: RE: Rick's verrrry hard 60s folkies quiz. From: Songster Bob Date: 10 Oct 00 - 01:08 AM This is going to be hard. I'll have to go back up top every time. Hey, why no cut-and-paste? #1. Who wrote "Ramblin Rompin' Rovin' Days"? (hope I got that title right!) I remember Patrick Sky singing "Romping, Roving Days," I think. Or was it Bruce Murdoch, and Sky's song was "Many a Mile." Come to think of it, I think that's what it was. "I've been a rambler all my rompin', rovin' days,/ Railway boy with nothin' much to do ...." #2. What artist wrote "On the Wilderness Road"? What artist had an album with that title? Didn't Art Thieme have the "Wilderness Road" album? Seems to me he did. Don't know who wrote the song, though. #3. Who had the Biggest hit of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"? I'd think Pete Seeger, 'cause it's his voice I hear singing it, but then I steered clear of the more pop singers/groups back then, so it coulda been PP&M. #4. Who was THE Folk photographer? Not Cohen, as mentioned above, unless you include trad. singers. The photog in question took shots that were on the cover of all the mags at the time, and I think it was a woman, but I can't remember the name. #5. Each of these artists had another profession. Name it. Ian Tyson -- Painter Sandy Paton -- social worker (?) Jimmie Driftwood -- don't remember, carpenter, maybe Eric Von Schmidt -- another painter #6. Who was Jack Elliot's singing partner in Europe? Answered above -- Derrol Adams #7. What artist was billed on her American debut album as "The World's Greatest Folksinger"? Joan Baez #8. What artist was billed on his debut American recording as "The World's greatest Folk Fiddler"? Jean Carignon #9. Who was succeeded by Bernie Krause in a popular band? Answered above, I think. #10. What male performer absolutely refused to put on a pair of pants during Woodstock? They had a Scots piper at Woodstock? Never noticed him in the movie! #11. Who wrote the song "500 Miles"? Who had a huge Country hit with it? Didn't Woody get credit for that, or maybe Cisco Houston? And I think Bobby Bare (as mentioned above) had the hit. #12. Who was Stan Rogers' lead guitarist? Damned if I know. #13. What Blues singer recorded a Yeats poem set to music, a Bert Brecht/Kurt Weill song, and debuted the songs of Joni Mitchell? Dave Van Ronk, as someone mentioned. #14. Who wrote "The Faucets are Dripping"? Malvina Reynolds #15.
