Oops, it's Nervous in Public Sometimes NIPS. The group does some playing, some singing. Here's their Website address, the site hasn't been updated too recently, but I expect that just means Chip has been busy. http://homepages.together.net/~chiph/nips/main.htm

Geeze Joe, you are good. I haven't been here much, and hadn't seen this thread until tonight. I was just about to add my info here as well when up it came.

I believe that NIPS, (never in public) still holds a weekly session on Wednesdays, somewhere in North Central Vermont. I'll see if I can get to their website and share the info here.

Glad to hear you can take this on, Genie! I am sure you will get lots of help, too.

Tioga County PA area, third Friday each month except when it conflicts with major church holiday observances. (Sometimes second Friday...) Led by the Good News-Goodtime Band. All playing levels, singers, and just-listeners welcome. Relaxed, family-friendly. Gospel, blues, old-timey, fiddle tunes.... all genres welcome. Location varies, usually central in county. People from elsewhere very welcome. Occasional weekend houseparties....

Contact me via e-mail for details, directions:

Just heard of one in Itaca NY, the Cornell Folk Song Society-- anyone been to this? I'll post the info soon, and a review when we've been to it ourselves.

Just so it doesn't get forgotten -

There's a new song circle in the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire (Conway area) that meets in people's homes. Folks can e-mail me (dschatz@post.harvard.edu) for directions. We gather on second Fridays of each month.

Dan

Hi, Genie - I think it's best to get it all covered by one person. Most of it can be done through this thread. You'll find a number of people will jump in and help, but we need one person to coordinate the effort. If you want to appoint people to cover regions, that's fine - it's your baby.
Thanks a lot.

Joe, if no one else volunteers before January, I am willing to spend some time on this permathread then. No time before Jan. 1.

Another idea: Can we get several volunteers to verify song circle info (and serve as channels for new info) for their regions? Then I could put all the info into a permathread that would be organized by location.
I am willing to take on verifying info for the West Coast, at least.
Maybe someone else could do the Rocky Mtn. states, another person the Mid-west, etc.
Somehow, we'll get it all covered.
Folks in the UK and other places in Europe --and wherever Mudcatters dwell -- may want to volunteer to coordinate info for their own regions, too.

Keep me posted.

Genie

From: Joe Offer

This thread (click) has information about a song circle starting in the Bronx.

I'm still looking for somebody who would like to verify and update the information posted in the two "song circle locations" threads, so we can put it together in a new "Song Circle PermaThread."

Volunteers?

Anybody?

Re Portland, OR Song Circles:
The info in the link above about NW song circles does not seem to be complete or up-to-date for PDX.
The Monday night song circle has been on Bidwell in the Sellwood area Sept 1 thru and Oct. 29, 2001. Merle Korn is still a good contact person ( or go to the PFS website) to see where it will be in Nov and later.

There is also a PFS 2nd  SATURDAY SONG CIRCLE - check the website for details on where it will be each month. It has been at Mary Wiley's on SE Lincoln (503-231-1387).

Non-PFS Song Circles & Jams:
Artichoke Music - SE 32nd and Hawthorne, Portland - Saturdays 2PM to 4PM (sometimes goes longer)

Yola's Foster Road Coffee House, corner of SE Foster and 65th. Most every Sunday 1PM to 3PM (or sometimes until 5PM). Contact Genie at geniesings@hotmail.com for information.

I'm looking for a volunteer to collate, verify, and correct all information we have in the two threads. If somebody would like to do that and post an update here in this thread, I'll start a PermaThread when I get back from the Getaway in November and post it in the PermaThread. Check the other PermaThreads for ideas on format.
Thanks.

Does anyone know of a song circle in the Lexington, KY area? Joe - is there now a permathread on this topic that I missed? Do we have the technology to do a state-by-state listing of circles?

Thanks! Waldo (a newbie!)

Prescott, AZ has one that kind of travels around from place to place. It's usually on the next to last or last Friday or Saturday of the month (regularity is boring) and the group uses RUS about 2/3 of the time. Call me at 520-777-8812 or Rissa at 520-445-8823 for information.

The two threads cross in chronology. Perhaps it would make sense to go to a Part Three for clarity, with fresh instructions from Joe Offer on what information to include when posting?

I started a song circle in my town as of this month (had the first one last Saturday).

The location is "Wellington's Tea & Pastry", Bozeman, MT. The day is every second Saturday of the month. The time is from 3pm to 4:30pm (unless it grows and we need to start earlier). The owner of Wellington's is a lovely lady from England named Gill (pronounced Jill).

The original song circle thread was up to 122 posts, so to make it easier on some of the computers out there, here's a continuation.

There is a chantey sing aboard the historic schooner C.A. Thayer at San Francisco's Hyde Street Pier, on Fisherman's Wharf. It happens on the first Saturday of every month, from 8pm to midnight. Free, but reservations are made by calling (415) 556-6435. I like to think of it as "a safe place to sing." All abilities are welcome, and all are welcome to lead a chantey or shore song. Mudcatters rIGGY, radriano, Melani, Elise, Winter's Wages, P.J. and Dave Swan are regulars and lead some wonderful songs. The only rules are: 1. Don't repeat a song that has already been done. 2. Songs must have a chorus, so everyone has a chance to join in. 3. Kids must be with parents or adult guardians. 4. No audible conversations during a song, out of respect for the singers and listeners. 5. Bawdy songs after 11:00 pm. 6. No smoking aboard ship. In the not a rule but a common courtesy category, no hogging the floor - give all who want to a chance to lead songs. Although there is probably no perfect way to organize a song circle that will please everyone, this system seems to have worked over the years for the greater good. If you're in the S.F. bay area around the 1st week of the month, give a call and come on down.
