Didn't care for the Rog' incident either. What was that all about?

Thought Jeter's throw, however, was way overlooked. He made a great play, but I really didn't get to see it on replay until Sunday. At least Tim "I'm just gonna keep talking" McCarver fessed up to overlooking Jeter's role in getting the big out.

And O'Neill's walk was right up there with the Boggs base on balls against Atlanta (who?). Boggs BTW would lose a point in any Yankees comparison (as does Clemens) because he's basically a Red Sox. (Please don't even mention Boggs sitting out end-of-season Boston games to protect his batting title while Don Mattingly plays.)

Torre doesn't make many mistakes, but bringing in any "closer" other than Reviera last night was a big one. Should have left Rog' in there. Allowed the Mets to leave on a big upbeat note and ended up causing Mo to take some knocking around that shouldn't even have happened.

But hey, bottom line here is that Yanks up 2 sure beats the alternative. Ya gotta feel good that the Mets' two aces left the Stadium without a W -- and we got El Duque tonite versus Reed (who?)!

Still, it ain't over yet. And I was sure glad last night that the game is for 9 innings, not 10.

Yes MT, on THAT I would agree. I think even the announcers were shocked that no action came about on the spot.

Clemens should have had his ass hauled out of the game right then and there. That he did not shows that TV ratings are more important than sportsmanship.

A bas les Yankees!

Well Leej, at least he "almost" hit him. The Yankee relievers would have hit themselves.

The only bad throw Clements made all night was when he missed Piazza with the bat.

And now 6-5. FIVE RUNS given up by the relievers when the starter was absolutely overpowering. Yanks win, but it got awful close thanks to the "Closer" philosophy.

After an impressive 8 innings from "The Rocket" where he completely overpowered the Mets, we co to the 9th with a closer and sure enough, the Mets score two runs. Now we have a second reliever and Bellinger just made a great catch to stop another 2 run homer. Could Clements have done worse? Looks like the Yankees will still win maybe, but once again the closer gets his ass kicked.

This is not turning out so good. This is why I wanted Seattle to win. At least then the series would have been evenly matched. I'm not sure anyone can beat the Yankees...

Hmmm........Looks like te Mets might be wanting to go back to the pre-game show at this point. The whole team seems to be lacking a "groove" tonight. Geneerally it the Mets who score early. They seem a bit taken aback.

Roger Clemens just tossed a broken bat at Mike Piazza and I'm out of Depends. I had so much fun last night. Party time in the streets. Even though my Mets lost. And now I am officially bedridden - but happy. Wait 'til we get that creep to Shea.

The Mets need to wake up and do the little things the right way or they'll be done in 4 games. Two outs and Timo Perez trots the bases? People standing at home plate before the ump makes a call? You can't give a veteran team like the Yankees any room to beat you. My opinion? The Mets played like they had the bloody game won already.

And the Yanks were ripe for the taking as well. Even with Perez idling 'tween 1st and 2nd, did you see the throw that it took to nail him? Simply World Series caliber baseball, ala Derek Jeter, and that has been the difference so far.

Joe Torre is a charmed manager, and Bobby V is snake-bit. The Mets need another miracle.

A lot of people don't like that Mrrz, but I don't object to "smart" play and that's the idea behind the Prevent defense or using a closer. Its just that I don't see those two things working with any consistency. If I have a pitcher who's looking good and strong and is facing the right combination, why should I remove him in favor of a guy who might be having an off game?

With the Prevent, its equally odd. I put in a defense that's set up not to allow the long ball/big gain and then watch as it gives up 7 yard gains 10 times!!!

The closer has gained a lot of prominence and favor in the past several years, but in many cases, the guy comes in and is less effective than the pitcher he replaced. Last night, Franco had come in and was throwing OK. They were hitting him, but not dangerously hitting him and he would have been pitching in the 9th to a good lineup for him to potentially get out. Why change?

It was certainly an interminable game. And the wrong guys won, albeit not undeservingly, IMHO. I still like rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers, what can I say (I'm actually a Red Sox fan). And catspaw, anything that is Prevent or Closer smacks of poor sportsmanship to me. The worst offender to my mind is the kneeldown towards the end of football games. It's like We're ahead but we don't think we should be, we are afraid we can't hold it so we're not even going to give you the chance to catch up. Wussasses.

okay...I'm an abysmal failure of a fan this year...haven't paid a lick of attention to anything except I was hopin' the Mariners could make the series. It has been a bit depressing for a "trying to be tried and true" Royals fan the past decade, but BASEBALL RULES!!!! Glad to see someone still discusses the sport with fervor...football sort of eclipses everything this time of year in Kansas! You guys keep commenting, I'll keep reading:-)!

Yeah Matt.....a couple of base running miscalls, at least in my opinion. Hammond has half the ERA of Clem Boy.....so we'll see.

Well...my man Armando did a really BAD job last night...and I'm not sure why they took out Franco. The Mets made a lot of other stupid calls that cost them the game. 2 of them by former members of my beloved Phillies (Todd Pratt & Todd Zeile). Although I was rooting for the Mets, I had to admit it WAS pretty cool that they played "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba when the Yanks tied the game. Well, we'll see what happens tonight! Hammond is pitching! YES!

Okay, I know there are a number of us with varying interest in ball and some with perhaps more (or less) in this particular Series. Sinsull is (at last report) at the game tonight! So be you fan, Mets fan, Yankee fan or whatever.......Whaddaya' think?

As I type, the first game has just gone into extra innings and makes me want to ask as I have often asked myself, when did the "Closer" become such a big deal and more to the point.....How come every important game I watch, the "Great Closer" blows it? I can watch some no-count game and the Closer does his job, but in every big game it seems that one of them craps out. Additionally, they seem to be afforded the status of many all-time greats......and I don't get it. Status used to go to the guys who completed games or the long relievers who came in hot and ready when a starter struggled. Now, it doesn't seem to matter what's going on.....Send in the CLOSER!

At times it reminds me of the "Prevent" defense in football. The Browns must have had a terrible "Prevent" because I spent years watching them piss away games they had in the bag by going to the "Prevent." 'Course I notice that a lot of other teams must have awful "Prevents" too, because it costs a lot of games. The Closer is in the same category......at least to me.

Well, I'll see how this one comes out, but I'm reminded that old John Franco looked OK and being a NY boy had the motivation.
