I think it's not "money-grubbing", but a way to introduce Bob to people who don't know about him, in a career-spanning way, for not a huge price, and on only 2 CD's. Before the new "Essential Bob Dylan", which goes for $22.00, you had to buy Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volumes I, II (double album) and III separately...together they cost around $45-50. When I start listening to someone I've never heard before, I always like to go to compilations first, to get a feel for it, than that lets me branch out and discovery the full range as I see fit. All my stuff--ELO, Queen, The Who...I started off with compilations. So yes, the album may seem gratuitous to veteran who have "been around" and have owned all the albums for years...but to the new generation, they are the seeds of the future.

HEY!

The 20 years of tull boxed set was mostly unreleased stuff, and some concert and radio reels....

The 25th aniversary was 1 CD of remixed classic stuff, and well remixed it is...
The 2nd CD is a live concert from 1970... really cool stuff.... the 3rd CD is unreleased studio versions of some stuff... And the last is a collection of live recordings from across the world, and through the years...

O.k... not for the occasional Tullite, but that's not the target audince of a boxed set like these... they're for us die hards who can't possible get enough TULL!! LOL!!!!

Dylan on the other hand... well as stated above... it's mroe for the occasional fan looking to agument a sparce collection... or for die hards like my mom, who has to own it all!!

Good point Steve. Glad you were finally able to make one.

As a replacement for vinyl or cassettes, when you aren's going for the complete collection, a lot of the boxed sets are a good deal. If the artist makes a killing on it, so what? If I were doing the Dylan thing, I'd buy the boxed set and about 3 other albums and have a pretty reasonable sampling.

Some of the sets are really excellent and pretty complete. Some give you a good sense of an artists periods....I think of the Paul Simon 3 CD set here. Nothing stops you from adding additional albums.

Bob is still such an influence that this may be designed for the younger market to help give them an understanding of Bob through all his stages as an artist. It could also be for the people who had soem Dylan Vinyl and cassettes who want a catchall replacement. It is remastered. Pretty good choices

I agree with annamill. Is the Dylan stuff re-mastered? Or the Tull? If this stuff isn't re-visited periodically it can simply disappear under the weight of the new swill that comes out every week. New releases often open up a whole new audience to some good music. I've never been into Tull, but I'll probably pick up one of the new compilations. That's just the way the business works.

So what? This is all they have. Great talents gone by the wayside into the world of hasbeens. Let them have a little money. And if the record companies make money too, more power to them. If you don't like the albums, don't buy them, that's all. I think there might be some younguns out there just discovering these old guys. I know my 24 year old son, who has been into rap, then Korn, Rage, etc has just recently "discovered" the Beatles. He actually went out and bought a couple of their CD's. Imagine. A mothers dream come true.

So Bob has another collection just released. Many of the songs have already been released on other anthologies; "Greatest hits", box set, etc.

But it ain't just Bob. Look at J. Tull. 20th anniversary, 25th anniversary, many other anthologies.

Cat Stevens, multitude of others. Same songs, just arranged in different order. No end in sight.

IMHO, this is a money grubbing act by the Record companies.

What do you other Catters think?

Is this an attemp to milk as many dollars as they can? Or, are they trying to keep their artisis in the limelight?

Whatever it is, it chaffs me.
