Lomax's Folk Songs of North America has it as Deer Chase, crediting Macon.

MM: I do a version of this, but its a story about a little boy wanting to go hunting with his dad. I know one version by Pete is in his "how to play the 5-string banjo" book. I've heard several versions of this and I have adapted them all into my own version. My version talks about one of the hounds called (appropriatly) Ol' Blue. Song includs:boy goes hunting-- boy gets lost --- hounds run to fast --- boy waits for long time --- Ol' Blue comes runnin and finds boy -- then the chorus "way, way we're bound for the mountain, bound for the mountain, etc. I think that every banjo player has his or her own version of this great banjo show-piece.

from John_in_brisbane. this is Pete Seeger's version, from the singing of Uncle Dave Macon. Doesn't appear to be complete because the gif also says "pete works up an imitation of hounds barking and ends with the shooting of the bear."

CUMBERLAND MOUNTAIN BEAR CHASE

(Banjo)
(Vocal intro)
A-way, a-way we're bound for the moun-tain
bound for the moun-tain,
bound for the moun-tain
O-ver the hill, the fields and the foun-tain
a-way to the chase a-way, a-way
(Banjo)

Now we're set just right for the race
the old hound dogs are read-y for the chase

Ov-er the moun-tain
the fields and the foun-tain
a-way to the chase a-way, a-way

Rover,rover, see him_, see him,
Rover, Roverm catch_ him_ catch_him

Listen to the hound dog's heavy bay
Sounding high over the way

All Night long till the break of dawn
Merrily the chase goes on

midi to alan, NWC file to Dick.
