Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Nov 00 - 08:03 PM That link to Martin Nail's pages up there somewhere is your best bet for finding anything.
Have a good time anyway. (And remember in England it's not 11/24, it's 24/11.
And calling in on Cecil Sharp House isn't a bad idea either. |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: bflat Date: 19 Nov 00 - 07:47 PM Shambles, thank you for the link. Quite a lovely place to visit. I've been doing the virtual tour. I don't know if I have enough time to get there on this trip. There is to be a wonderful performance but traveling that far from prepaid logging doesn't make a lot of sense. Many thanks just the same. bflat |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: The Shambles Date: 19 Nov 00 - 07:07 PM Cockermouth. Bit far from London? |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: bflat Date: 19 Nov 00 - 06:37 PM I may have gotten the location wrong. Is there a Cockermouth? bflat |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: bflat Date: 19 Nov 00 - 06:35 PM Can anyone tell me where Cockelmouth is? There is a perfomance by a young Canadian on the 25th which looks exciting. Thanks bflat |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Nov 00 - 05:52 PM Oxford is the main SHOPPING street, where you are most likely to get ripped off or your wallet snatched. Bond is a bit more up market, any hotel there will be either fairly smart and worth every penny, or else will be a total dive. Hope you get the former. Look in the shops in Bond St. My father in law did a lot of shop fitting down there..... you may see some of his best work, and not realise!! You will be near several tube (underground) stations, and it is best to get a travel card, if you intend to go lots of places. Walking is OK but a bit of a bind. A one day travel card should cost less than £5.00, gives you unlimited travel on underground and buses after 9.30am within the particular zones limit. Check your zones carefully as they will charge you a lot if you overshoot it. The main ones are 1 2 & 3, which should get you to Kew Gardens in the west, and East Ham to the east. Don't remember the north/south ones, but no-one in their right mind goes south - or as it is known here saaf o' da riva.... The tickets run out at midnight, but if you are already on the bus, they shouldn't kick you off. If you are coming out of a tube station, make sure it is the last one you need, or the machines will eat your ticket after 12.00midnight. Taxis WILL double charge you after then, despite the fact that they shouldn't. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.... LTS

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: bflat Date: 12 Nov 00 - 04:27 PM Anyone know the Jurys Clifton Ford Hotel? Located at 47 Welbeck Street, London. Near Oxford and Bond. Is the music close by? Many thanks. bflat |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 Nov 00 - 11:54 AM Glad to hear it LTS, and glad to see Mudcatters weighing in with some useful advice at last! (London ain't that bad.) Long Firm Freddie, go to the FAQ thread that's always top of the list, then skim through Joe's first post and click on "basic mudcat HTML" or whatever it's called. All will be explained. A blue clicky is fiddly for the person doing it, but it makes life a whole lot easier for everyone else. |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Nov 00 - 08:58 AM The non vulgar thing will go as soon as my (non) apppearance on Songs of Praise is over..... or not..... I've been a bad girl, and now I must take my punishment.... LTS |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: GUEST,CraigS Date: 11 Nov 00 - 09:08 PM Best club in London area is the Herga, Mondays, in Harrow. You can find Johnny Collins, Dave Webber & Anni Fentiman, and others there most club nights. E-mail craigsouter@cs.com, say which area you intend to stay, and get better advice. |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: The Shambles Date: 11 Nov 00 - 08:31 PM Is there anyone you would like to see, if possible while you are here? May be able to help you more from that angle? |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Lady McMoo Date: 11 Nov 00 - 02:23 PM There are Irish sessions in Richmond (in South-West London). One is on Tuesday evenings in the Duke's Head in The Vineyard and the other is in the Red Cow on Sheen Road on Sunday evenings. The latter has been going now without a break for some 24 years. Good luck finding some good music and enjoy your trip! Best regards, mcmoo |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 10 Nov 00 - 08:18 PM Liz, what's with this non-vulgar tone creeping into your posts of late? I've noticed it in two or three threads now. And how had I got it into my head that you lived somewhere north of Watford when in fact you are somewhere south of Forest Gate? |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Nov 00 - 03:12 AM I'd find out soon if I were you, London is pretty big!! If you do get horribly lost, there are a couple of beds in Downtown Plaistow (look at an underground map, look right. Keep looking right, along the green bit. Bit further right, no, that's too far if you fall off the page..... see? There we are). You can see the Dome lights from our house if you stand on the table in the back bedroom..... PM me or Manitas if you want to know more/meet up, and we will see what we can do... LTS |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: bflat Date: 09 Nov 00 - 07:29 PM Thank You all. I prefer to listen. I won't be bringing along any instruments. Can't recall the hotel, daughter made the reservation but I know it is in London. Thanks again. Keep the ideas coming if you think of anything. bflat |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 09 Nov 00 - 04:16 PM There used to be a truly cosmopolitan jazz session at the King's Head, Crouch End (N8), Sunday lunchtimes - great atmosphere, and better than most of the Irish/folk sessions I ever found. I'm not in London anymore, so check first. Also bluegrass (Pete Stanley & Co) at the Stick & Weasil(spelling?) near Angel (City Road I think), again Sunday lunchtime. For Irish traditional, try Biddy Mulligan's at Kilburn and the Irish Centre, Camden. |

Subject: RE: Arriving London 11/24 Where is the Music From: Manitas Date: 09 Nov 00 - 02:16 PM http://web.ukonline.co.uk/martin.nail/Folkmus.htm is another useful link. When you arrive get hold of a copy of Time Out which is a pretty comprehensive listings magazine. Where are you likely to be staying? |
