Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Bill D Date: 17 Dec 00 - 02:20 PM re:bookmarks...actually, you can 'usually' import bookmarks between programs...if the bookmark file is available at all, there are ways to get make it usable again...(I have bookmarks dating to early 1996 that have gone thru 3 crashes, 2 computers and 3 browsers...) most important is to have a *BACKUP** system and routine and DO IT...if not daily, then weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your use....just backing up vital stuff, like bookmarks, personal files etc, will do, programs can always be re-installed. Zip drives are good, CD-RW is better, but even little floppies will do for some emergency copies of things... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 17 Dec 00 - 02:19 PM Allan, what I tried to do was cut/paste the Favorites column into either Word or e mail, so I could send it to myself......didn't work. We were never able to get the A drive (floppy) working on the other one.....so, no discs. It's OK, I just wrote them down and re entered them manually. Tedious, but it worked. and kat, now that I have an HP, I want one of these programs too. Are they available at the HP site? World's Best Kept Secret!! LOL!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: katlaughing Date: 17 Dec 00 - 01:37 PM Oh, yeah, Snuffy, it's an exclusive of HP's! And, only for certain clientele. If you want to track down a copy, I would recommend contacting Blake Madison, Mudcat detective extrordinaire. If anyone can find one, it'd be him!**BG** Banj, it'll do in a pinch or in between or while solo or, well....you get the idea... LOL...kat |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Allan C. Date: 17 Dec 00 - 07:57 AM Sorcha, you said you couldn't paste your bookmarks. I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. Twice now, I have located the bookmark file in an old computer and copied it to disk and then copied that file from disk to the new computer. Of course, this will only work when using the same browser (as far as I know). |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Banjer Date: 17 Dec 00 - 07:11 AM Damn isn't the age of technology wonderous?? Now they even have programs for love making....What'll they come up with next? But really, does anybody NEED such a program? I would think it more fun to make up your own as you go. Buut you know, different strokes...etc. Sorcha, i'm happy for you and know you will enjoy the new machine. It's good to see Santa was good to you! I just recently upgraded mine to Pentium III with 600 mhz, have 64 megs of RAM with an 18gig hard drive. I love it. If I may make one recomendation as to browsers, stay away from Netscape 6.0. I downloaded it after using their 4.7 for a while and was sorely disappointed. Biggest piece of garbage in the name of progress I havbe seen for quite some time. Anyhow, enjoy your new toy and have a Happy Holiday Season!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Snuffy Date: 17 Dec 00 - 06:13 AM Kat You said "I have the original and love making programs". Is that love-making program specific to HP or will it run on any machine? I want one! **BG** Wassail! V |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Dec 00 - 11:55 PM Sorcha, money certainly does enter the equation but I see no reason to suspect that your machine will not give you years of reliable service - plus it sounds like you have a good service deal. It could well be a good buy and it could well suit your needs for years to come.... I think all cases are different. I am a "sling it together myself" person and keep things running that way largely because of finances but I have enough ability to change bits when necessary to keep me current enough to do what I want to do.. On the other hand I suggested my mum bought a Packard Bell, simply on the grounds ofher lack of tech knowledge and the support deal she was offered from the store close to her... Maybe you should just enjoy what you have now which is more than adequate for most users - I have a 500 and you have an 850... and I have no plans of upgradingin the forseable future. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Bill D Date: 16 Dec 00 - 11:53 PM Unless WinME is terribly different, all you do with fonts is put them in c:\windows\fonts and MS Word will find them.......that is, the ones you want 'handy'...if you have more than a few hundred, you may need to put them in a 'spare' directory or 3.....I have dozens & dozens of Blackletter & Celtic fonts, and GIF & JPEG pictures of them...(I found the alt.binaries.fonts newsgroup right when guys were dumping thousands of fonts!...as they are again right now...but mostly Adobe typeI fonts>)...anyway, I'll make selections available if you want...(and do you have a stand alone font viewer/manager?...try The Font Thing a totally free.....ummm.....Font Thing..)... (it is late and my mind is not coping with it all right now...I'll look back in tomorrow...*smile*) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 00 - 11:32 PM Yes, Jon, I did. And I did because I am not entirely sure what I have, or even what I wanted. You are correct in that if I had unlimited funds it would have been Dell or Gateways, but this one was on sale, and seemed to be OK. Still does, (after only 3 days) but I have "heard" from un named sources that HP's tend to give up the ghost too soon......oh well. I have most of my programs loaded, and we'll wait it out. I do have a 4 year service contract, and a "lemon" clause...as long as the sucker doesn't freeze up!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Dec 00 - 11:23 PM Sorcha, in relation to my comments, this thread, particularly Branwen's comments may be of interest. Whatever, I am glad you are up and running - just you asked for opinions. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Dec 00 - 09:52 PM sorcha, Iam assuming that "integrated graphics" means that rather than having a separate graphics card, this computer has the graphics system built onto the mother board - great until things go wrong or you want to upgrade that part of the computer. I am out of touch (even UK wise) but if it had of been me, I think I would have been looking at the Dell 4100 series or possibly a Gateway (I've not visited thier site) if I was to look at quality US brands. This of course is only one person's opinion but it is the way I see it. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 00 - 09:49 PM Yea, well I can delete/uninstall the BS I don't want, but just how do I integrate new fonts into MS Word? (and it did come with a lot of BS stuff....Encarta Encyclopedia, HP Tour, Your Software......sheesh) |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Dec 00 - 09:33 PM Far out Sorch!!! You deserve something good to happen and that is one helluva' nice setup you've got!!! Way to go Kiddo!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: katlaughing Date: 16 Dec 00 - 09:32 PM I have an HP and really like it, Sorcha, it's older, a Pavilion 8275. Congratulations and I hope it does help cheer you a bit. If it's fonts you want, see BillD, he's got 'em coming out of his ears and is not at all shy about sharing them. Did you get the program that replaces their Greetings Workshop program? I have the original and love making programs, cards, tape labels etc. in it and it has fantastic fonts, very wide range. I am thinking of u[grading to their new one. All in all we've been very happy with this, except for some of the BS which was pre-loaded which we never use. I don't know enough about it to delete without possibly losing something I may need elsewhere. Have fun, womon, you deserve it! luvyakat |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 00 - 08:13 PM And just what are integrated graphics? Is that the screen that comes up on a re boot that says "Windows Me"? The only thing I have discovered so far that I don't like is that my font choices in MS Word are much diminished. I think that is Windows Millenium, tho, rather than the machine itsself. No Blackletter or Celtic fonts at all...... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Dec 00 - 07:27 PM PIII - 850Mhz -not bad, quite a lot faster my PC! It looks a good spec but I have one objection that would put me off this machine. This could be me and it will be interesting to see what others say but I have a thing against integrated graphics. Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Jon Freeman Date: 16 Dec 00 - 07:04 PM I haven't seen much of Hewlett Packard PCs but the company has an excellent reputation so I would imagine you have made a good choice. Which model of the Pavilion range is it? There are probably some reviews of it on the internet that may be interesting to read. Jon |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 00 - 06:48 PM Well, BillD, it came with some "free gifts", I just can't find any I want!! LOL!! No Cakewalk, etc, just dumb game stuff like Freddie the Fish.......Biggest problem is that I had to re type my address book and bookmarks by hand, old one is froze up and wouldn't copy/paste. (Bookmarks won't paste anyway.) I also discovered that now MidiNotate's freeware is only a 7 day trial period--after that you pay or lose it. There is a grandfather clause that allows earlier downloads to continue free, but I can't figure out how to tranfer the program from the old to the new........ |

Subject: RE: BS: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Bill D Date: 16 Dec 00 - 06:41 PM sounds zippy and usable!...be sure you have all relevant virus screens and such going...You want neat freeware programs? Just ask....That machine should do almost anything you ask...*smile*..... |

Subject: Sorcha has new computer!! From: Sorcha Date: 16 Dec 00 - 06:29 PM Well, friends, my Holiday came early this year, partly I think to try and make me feel better....I have a brand new Hewlett Packard Pavilion; 128 RAM, with a 28 GB hard drive. Also has CD writer...... New monitor, and keyboard. Haven't quite figured out the keyboard programming yet. I hope I haven't made a mistake......if so, I have to return it before the 27th of December. Any opinions? |
