My Italian accordion is "Bianco", because when she was made, about fifty years ago, someone wrote bianco in pencil inside the box to tell the bellows assembler what color bellows to put on. Since I think of her as feminine, however (she's a ladies' size box), maybe I should call her "Bianca"

My German box is probably "Hanz" or "Dieter" or something.

The bicycle I bought in 1974 or so was called Angelina, and so My first car, which I boughtin 1979 became Angelina II. By sheer coincidence the thread titled "Angeline" has suddenly been refreshed in the last day.

My current car - only the second I have ever owned - is called Queenie because the three letters on the number plate are QUY.

The company car I used to drive had the three letters UFA so I used to call it Uther (as in Pendragon) but then I changed it to Igraine because I looked at the relevant bits and found out she was female. (BG)

I have a mandolin, tenor banjo and a mandola, when they are in tune and playing they are all little darlings, when they wont stay in tune they are all called ' useless piece of crap 'or ' useless pile of junk '.

Yeah, all my cars have had names too.The current is called Edna ( Edna the inebriate car in full) as she can't pass a garage without needing a drink.

Makes me think of BB King, who named his guitar "Lucille". Once upon a time, some guy wrote to New Musical Express and said he'd noticed BB was playing two other guitars in his recent (CA. 1978) concert in the UK , and what were they called? The response was that BB owned 47 guitars, and they were all called Lucille. My guitar is called "Willie Mae", but that was not my idea (previous owner - one Big Bill Broonzy). We don't name instruments in our house- but all our cars have stupid names, like the white and black one was Cuddles (after a famous killer whale), the graphite grey one was Penny (pencil grey), and the current blue one is Bonnie. My cousin Pete had a green van called Blue (as in Come on Blue, you good van, you).

Is that flattered or flattened Mort? Yeah, I think a lot of us name things....I have a 6 named Marie as in "Absolutely Sweet Marie," and a 12 named "Baby Doll." Tris is really cute with that....I say, "Tris, go get Baby Doll," and he lugs the heavy case and all wherever. But I don't dare touch her without him...."My job Daddy....Baby Doll my job!"

My van is an Astro conversion named Lola ("What Lola wants, Lola gets")......All my cars have had assorted names. The 'Vette I ran Solo and Hillclimbs with was called "Pignuts".......don't ask. I had a '68 Jag E-Type named "Bitch Kitty" for obvious reasons.

I'm one of those weirdos that believes that inanimate objects have a soul somewhere..............I think it started with Teddy Bears.

Hey, I think "Mandolin" would be a lovely name to give a baby. Maybe even "Mandolin Wind ..."

First time I ever saw Loreena McKennit, way way back in the late 70's, she was a guitar-toting waif at Winnipeg Folk Fest. Guitar was a cranky (as in untuneable) big Martin which she called Sebastian.

Funny, I don't think I've ever named one of my instruments.

Hi Morty,

My big (34 string) Celtic harp is Nereida. When she was being made I was driving back & forth to the harpmaker's place every couple of weeks and the street name just before his place is Nereida Street. A Nereid is a sea nymph, and when I finally wondered what my harp's name might be, Nereida popped into my head.

For some reason, and I have no idea why, my 28 string lap harp is called Dante.

I don't know if my hubby Bruce would like having the same name as a mandolin, but I guess there are worse entities to share your name with than a mandolin.

All instruments have names, it's just a matter of finding out what it is.....interesting, all mine have been feminine. (gypsy who is superstitious, and doesn't say a name out loud)

Okay, maybe this is going to sound a little wierd, but hey, this is customary from me,yes?I was playing with Bruce this evening ( not a sordid sexual confession, Bruce is my mandolin) and got to wondering.....does anyone else have a name for their instrument,what is it and why? ( and I know I'm leaving myself wide open for a Spaw special here.)
My mandolin is called Bruce because of " Mandolin Rain" by Bruce Hornsby.
