Subject: RE: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: Sorcha Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:20 AM That's what I thought, flattop. Well, it will be an interesting turn up, won't it? I'll let you know if the money shows up! |

Subject: RE: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: flattop Date: 13 Jan 01 - 01:18 AM If the U.S. taxes lotteries, your friend would most likely be taxed on Canadian lottery winnings. Your government tries to tax its citizens on earnings even when they leave the country. Canada and the U.S. have an agreement where under certain conditions, the country where the person resides for the longest part of the year get to tax the individual. Your friend would have to work in Canada for more than half of the year to be under the Canadian tax system to be eligable for a Canadian tax exemption on lotteries. If he was able to move to Canada and it looked like the move was simply for tax avoidance, your government would still be looking for their money. |

Subject: RE: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: Jimmy C Date: 13 Jan 01 - 12:59 AM That size of a win is hard to keep secret. If an american won a prize like that it would be all over the newspapers. Even a prize of $50,000 gets your picture in local publications. Not that my picture has ever been in one for that reason. I cannot run cattle by the way, but am willing to learn. I also know a great night herding song I got from the singing of Rambling Jack. |

Subject: RE: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: Sorcha Date: 13 Jan 01 - 12:47 AM I don't know.......can you run cattle? I did find a list of recent "winners" of most of the Can. Lotteries, and his name was not on it....I have no clue, really. He is keeping it sort of quiet, for obvious reasons if it's true! |

Subject: RE: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: Jimmy C Date: 13 Jan 01 - 12:44 AM I don't know about non canadians paying tax on their winnings but if a canadian wins the lottery they pay no tax at all, at least in Ontario anyway.
We have lotteries in most if not all provinces, so tax may be required in some, but I don't think so. Also we have various lotteries in Ontario, such as Lotto 6/49, Super 7 , Pick 3, Winner Take all etc, etc. Your friend's father probably won $12 million in Canadian dollars, which is still a nice piece of change in any currency. Would he like to adopt me ?. |

Subject: BS HELP: ?? About Canadian Lottery... From: Sorcha Date: 13 Jan 01 - 12:32 AM Calling all Canadians.........do any of you know anything about this? Is there more than one? A friend of mine told me today his dad (US Citizen) won $12 million in the Canadian lottery......(don't know if the $$ are Can or US) He also said his Dad doesn't have to pay US taxes on it because he paid Canadian taxes.......(I'm just curious, here.......) |
