You might also want to contact Lucy Castle, who is something of an expert on Transylvanian fiddling styles.  Web-page with contact details:  Lucy Castle-Hotea

Mary, Thanks for your offer to pass on my question. Much appreciated!

I tried sending you a PM and got a message that, "No member were found. Go back and try again." Ah, technology.

In case that happens with me, I can be e-mailed at cwellner@goldrushbc.com.

Thanks again!!

Cathryn

Is anyone familiar with the Romanian tuning of the Stroh violin. Popular in the early 1900s as a studio instrument, the Stroh fell into disuse when recording technology improved.

It is still being made, and played, in Bihor, Romania. When we purchased a Stroh this year (made in Rosia in 2000), it was strung with an E string in the G position. The other strings were similar in diameter to standard violin strings.

Though we restrung it so I could play it right away, we are still wondering about the original tuning.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

Cathryn
