Thanks Wolfgang and Greyeyes, Kat and Bill for your replies. I would love it if you could scan in the contents, or even some of the contents, Bill, but don't go to too much trouble, I could ask the bookseller...

It is a book of trad. ballads. I realise now, that they have the Kinsley edition in Plymouth Reference library, UK and that one does have the odd tune printed along with loads of ballads.

One thing interesting is that I've been told the edition of Oxford book of (?British) Ballads, ed. Quiller-Couch has over 900 pages. Ergo, where did the extra ones come from. I'm going to have to part with my hard-earned...

thanks to you all for speedy help.

Deni from Devon.

Yup, Quiller-Couch 1910, Kinsley 1969.

The version I found edited by James Kinley must be a later edition, in which case I would think £29 was reasonable for the Quiller-Couch.

The Oxford book of ballads which I have was chosen and edited by Arthur Quiller-Couch. It has 871 pages and as I said earlier 176 songs. If anyone would like I could scan the contents pages and email them to you.

Deni, Here is a link to the other thread: Plymouth Song Index.

I found it by typing in "Plymouth" without the quotation marks, in the SuperSearch box, at the top of the thread titles on the main forum page, then clicking on Search/Go. This searches for all songs and thread containg that word.

I had missed it the first time round, so thanks for starting this one!

There is a book called "Poems and Ballads" by Quiller-Couch, but I think it was written by him, rather than edited. Or there is "The Oxford Book of Ballads", but that was edited by James Kinley.

Deni, The Oxford book of Ballads to which you refer has 176 songs all of them trad ballads. There no music. I would say it was worth £29. If you want to know the contents please PM me .

For the second question, Dani:
Could that be the Oxford book of English verse (same author)? If yes, the contents are here

hay-ulp

i've lost the link to this very useful thread. Just when I wanted to check something. Anyone know it. Also, does anyone know about the content of Quiller-couch's book, the Oxford book of british Ballads. someones offered me one for £29 and I wonder if it contains what I want. which would be trad. ballads, some with music. I believe it has over 900 pages. Gulp. That'll keep me quiet! Thanks deni
