Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: Peg Date: 15 Mar 01 - 10:18 AM it is the Pioneer Valley officially but it does have the pet name The Happy Valley...ask anyone who has lived there! of course the name is somewhat sarcastically used by some...referring to the place's reputation as a bastion of political correctness |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: Mark Cohen Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:04 PM Peg, I think it's the Pioneer Valley. Happy Valley is (among others, I'm sure) State College, PA, home of Penn State. Of course, depending what you did in college it could have been a happy valley for sure. Me, I spent a miserable year (1984-85) living in East Longmeadow when I was on the staff of Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, brightened only by my trips to Northampton, with chocolate pudding ice cream at Herrell's, dinners at Hot Tomatoes, and concerts at the Iron Horse. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: SINSULL Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:12 AM NYC used to use name codes. Ours was Virginia. Phone was VI3-6843. I thought it referred to Amherst, a little town outside Buffalo. How is any of this helping Aggie? Satch - when will we hear you play on Platalk? Max needs some more blues fans around here. |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: Peg Date: 14 Mar 01 - 10:05 AM I used to live in Northampton myself (and Amherst; and Easthampton). Wonderful area! You must go to Atkins' Farms at the base of Mt. Monadnock in South Amherst. Lovely scenery surrounds a fabulous natural foods/fresh fruit shop. For entertainment, well the Iron Horse would be the thing. Good food, too. (sigh) I miss the Happy Valley. |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: Kernow John Date: 13 Mar 01 - 05:58 PM When I saw Amherst in the thread I thought it was something to do with Hackney in the UK. Before digital dialing the code for Hackney was AMHerst you dialed the first three letters and then your three numbers. Bet you wanted to know that didn't you? *BG* Regards KJ |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: dwditty Date: 13 Mar 01 - 01:38 PM Used to live there, too. Both in Northampton and Sunderland while attending UMASS. Pick up a copy of the Valley Advocate - they'll have a complete listing of what is going on. If you go into Amherst center, stop into Valley Bookshop and tell Larry Pruner that Rich Gallagher says hello. dw |

Subject: RE: Amherst 3/14 From: katlaughing Date: 13 Mar 01 - 12:51 PM Oh! Wish I still was in Noho...we could go to Bonducci's, if it's still there, or Thorne's Market, then I'l bet there's someone performing at the Iron Horse by the w/end. My office was right across the street from there. Have fun! |

Subject: Amherst 3/14 From: GUEST,AggieBethie Date: 13 Mar 01 - 12:47 PM I'm up here in Massachusetts visiting my crazy and best friend from high school and I was just wondering if anything was going on today (3/13) or tomorrow (3/14). I'm dying to hear some new music and thought some of you might live in the five college area. Talk to all of you soon on PalTalk. Laters. Bethany |
