Peg, they are the same (Gaelic and English titles). That's in Moffat's 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Highlands', Also there is "The Misty Dell".

man from England having business to do with another in Scotland, proceeded to Edinburgh by coach and put up an an inn for the night. The man he was to see lived about 10 miles distant, so said Englishman hired a horse and proceeded on his way. After three miles it started to rain, and after five he was soaking wet, and turned around and went back to Edinburgh. The next day the same thing happened. On the third day it didn't start raining until he'd gone 6 miles. At that point he saw a small boy leaning on a fence and looking at the wet rider. Rider asked boy, "Does it always rain in this infernal country?" Boy replied "Naw, sir, sometimes it snaws."

I have entered mist @scots into the search window to find all songs that are classified as scottish songs and have the word 'mist' in them. Here's the result.

And of course this is a phrase to be careful using around German speakers..It caused my Bavarian friends to syphon beer down their noses, and cough and splutter sporadically for a long time after ,when it was remarked that their was Scotch Mist falling outside the pub...

MacCrimmon's Lament in the DT uses the words:

Round Cuillin's peak the mist is sailing... You can hear a MIDI of it at Lesley's site even though this version doesn't use the word mist. The song, however, is so beautiful, and the story compelling, I would be tempted to somehow use it.

Alex ... it would be literal ... as in fog. I can find lots of references to a Scotch Mist but not anything that actually describes it...LL

I think LL means what is usually known as "Scotch Mist" which is a euphemism for the rain which falls so plentifully in my former homeland.

My daughter is doing a presentation on Scotland for her Gr.8 Social Studies project. One of the things she has to do is an oral presentation on the environment. She has choosen to focus on the Scottish Mist. Can any of you help with a song or poem relating to this topic? Thanks for your interest....LL
