Let's get serious..;)

This thread started when I bought a cake of Pears Soap at the local shop yesterday. It is still made "By Appointment" to HMtheQueen - and A & J Pears (London) are shown as the manufacturers.

Aaaarrgghhh...

It's going to be difficult being serious - there's a 1959 recording of Stan Freeburg (sp?) in NZ, on the wireless at the moment..;)

Anyway....

I did a check on "A & J Pears" and came up with the following serious link about the history of soap in The Pharmaceutical Journal. Fascinating!

I also found another reference to soap - blowing Soap Bubbles - now that was a very serious occupation.

Cheers - Sam

No Metchosin it doesn't (even though I remember the song) it's too much of a LUXury. If I dig deep enough my PERSIL come up with funds for a BETT-A - if the OLD DUTCH doesn't RINSO the wallet when she washes my strides with that product from the CHEM-I-CO.

It's not punny - this thread was supposed to be serious.

Sam

I just knew you lot would SOLVOL my cleaning problems!

Even though some brands are unfamiliar to me, it's amazing how many seem to be cosmopolitan. I guess the big soap companies were among the first "internationals" - I know that many small NZ soap-makers got LEVERed out in the sixties.

And what a bonus from Metchosin - pass on my thanks to pa-in-law - I've loved Granny's Lye Soap since I was a kid, and helped my Granny's sister make the product in the "copper" (big wood-fired wash boiler).

Keep up the good work folks

Cheers - Sam

This looks like a good spot to share my great-granddad's or my granddad's recipe written in one of their Denver Live Stock Commission Company Tally and Brand books. This is copyrighted as it is going to be in the family history book I am writing. Anyway, they call it "Home Brew" but I think it might be better to clean something on the outside with it, rather than the inside.:-)

Home Brew
by L.D. & Frank Hudson
Sundown Buttes Ranch
New Castle, CO
circa 19teens

Chase wild bull frogs three miles and gather the hops.
To them add ten gallons of tan bark,
half a pint of shellac and one bar of homemade soap.
Boil 36 hrs. and strain thru (sic) an I.W.W. sock to keep it from working.
Add one grasshopper to each pint to give it a kick.
Pour a little into the kitchen sink.
If it takes the enamel off, it is ready for bottling.

Interesting that you should bring up the song Gramma's Lyesoap. The words were written by my father-in law in the early fifties, while he was recuperating in a Veteran's hospital.

Johnny Stanley was entertaining in the various veteran's hospitals, in Canada at he time and was stuck for a song for one of his skits. My father-in-law, Bob, came up with the song based upon a real character from his childhood, a Mrs. Billy Clark, of Simpson, Saskatchewan.

When Stanley was going to make the record, he asked Bob if he wanted credit for it and my father-in-law suggested he send any royalties for it to the Veterans instead.

He never found out if Stanley in fact did, but there is a bit of trivia for you. Bob is still alive and well and playing his fiddle in Victoria, BC at the age of 83.

I had this BRILLO idea but then it went down the DRANO. When I drank from the IRISH SPRING, my impure thoughts were once again purged and I remain forever yours, MR. CLEAN.

IVORY-considered my previous thoughts on this matter; and DOVE course you are right...

I do not use old-fashioned alkaline soaps any more on my body; prefer olive oil based as they are less drying. I also only use all natural cleansers or the most basic old-fashioned cleaners my home, like Murphy's Oil Soap, baking soda and white vinegar.

My neighbors are SIMPLY GREEN with envy at my sparkling, non-toxic home.

G'day,

I'm talking cleansers, not operas...

May I hold your Palm Olive? What! Out here in the Sunlight? Not on your Life-Boy!

It a-Pears confusing to me - which is transparent to old soapers from way back...

And if we must be folking conservative we can discuss recipes for Granny's lye soap...:)

Who's into a clean thread?

Ma might get grumpy...;)

Sam
