Tom... keep at it. Sounds like a great drinking song. We Irish Descendants have been known to combime song and drink.

The hippies set back Indian music twenty years ? Gee, I thought they exposed it to America. We get an Indian TV channel out of TO (that's Tronna, Canada - Maritimer spelling), I think, here in New Brunswick and they got some good tunes ! Not many drinking songs, but good tunes.

Good luck with the lyics, keep them simple and free of political tones as mentioned above. It will help also to get the spelling correct. e.g. It's St Patrick's Day, rather that St Paddy's Day, I know this may seem like a monor peeve but for the a lot of Irish it is a solemn feast day and deserves to be called it's proper name.

Also - Did he hail from Innishkennen - I believe you may mean Enniskillen ?.

Get yourself a book on place names, many of them lend themselves to great rhyming ?

OK, I guess I don't get exactly which "political slogan", or just why Davecoje has his jockeys in a joust. I think it is kinda cute, and is there a difference between "Big Mick", "The Big Guy"(Mick Collins), "mick" as a generic/derogatory term?

Maybe he just needs to add something like:
"Did your da beat the Lambeg Drum
Round about town of Derry,
While he and your mum
Made the day so merry?"

It's not exactly like un acknowledged pregnancies are exclusively Irish......nor does it mean Rape. I don't think that is the point here.

There is also the point that a lot of "Irish Folk Songs" are not Irish at all--Wild Rover, Danny Boy, (keep going here), and Dave, just go listen to some Mozart if that is the way you feel. Won't hurt my feelings at all.

how about this...don't try writing an Irish song....maybe write about being a descendant of some one who chose the boat....or maybe write about their experiences....write something you know...write an American song.....and Alison is right....leave out anything political....leave out green beer also....

Jesus Christ, is it any wonder classical music is sounding better all the time? I just got a computer and found the web and found Mudcat Cafe and I think it's great!

Now for my re-Quest.

I ain't Irish. I'm sorta of Irish descent. Kinda.

Each St. Paddy's day I wish I had this song to sing:

"Does your Mother know you're Irish?"

So far I have the following slipshoddy verse:

Does your mother know you're Irish? Does she know your Da's a mick? Did he hail from Innishkennen Or sail out from Limerick?

I know its not up there with world hunger but I'd sure like to see it fall together in time for the next drinkin of the green (beer)
