Subject: RE: Help: Mechanical Rights From: SeanM Date: 31 Aug 01 - 01:54 AM Here's a discussion on a fairly similar topic: copyright thread. It's not my ass, but it's more informative and actual facts rather than hazy recollections. M |

Subject: RE: Help: Mechanical Rights From: SeanM Date: 30 Aug 01 - 06:02 PM I'm not an expert on this - and this has also been covered in some of the threads (excellent reference, BTW) over the years... But as I understand, mechanical rights are associated with the actual reproduction of the song. It's (I believe) an element of copyright - one side protects people from attempting to claim the song as theirs, the other protects people from profiting from your specific works. I believe (again, I may be entirely misinformed) that the fees attached to jukeboxes and royalties paid for due to useage of a particular recording of a song count as 'mechanical rights'. Anyone NOT talking out their ass want in on this? M |

Subject: RE: Help: Mechanical Rights From: Jim Krause Date: 30 Aug 01 - 05:49 PM Huh? I guess I'm not much of a geek. Who's Data, and what's TNG? Jim Oh, why do I have the sneaking suspicion that this is a Star Trek reference? Sorry, I didn't watch that series much. JK |

Subject: Mechanical Rights From: Jim Krause Date: 30 Aug 01 - 05:32 PM Well I'm back from vacation and when I wasn't out tramping on the Oregon coast, or hiking along the sides of Mt. St. Helens, I thought about the Mud Cat. Yeeef, how's that for an online abuse problem? Anyway, I was visiting with a cousin about copyrights and related topics. He says he still gets royalty checks from his brother's recordings. (He passed away some years ago.) My cousin said something about mechanical rights; that I ought to make sure I have secured the mechanical rights to my songs. I asked him whatintheheck were mechanical rights. He said he had no idea, and the whole thing confused him. OK, Catters, edumacate me. PS I'm going to be on the road this week end up in Iowa with my band, so I won't be online for a few days--say Tuesday. JK |
