Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don't Jump Off Roof, Dad (Keillor) From: GUEST Date: 04 Aug 10 - 09:02 PM Daddy came home from work tired. The boss had been driving him mad The kids started howling, the dog bit him, too His dinner was nothin' but warmed over stew. I guess it was then he decided Up to the rooftop he'd go He was about to jump off when The kids started howlin' below. Don't jump off of the roof, Dad You'll make a dent in the yard Mother just planted petunias The weedin' and seedin' was hard If you must end it all Dad Won't you please give us a break Just take a walk in the park, Dad And there you can jump in the lake. That's all I can get from memory. I actually still have the old Homer and Jethro album. When I get a chance, I'll play the song and get the second verse. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don't Jump Off Roof, Dad (Keillor) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 18 Dec 08 - 05:10 AM I've just checked out the Tommy Cooper version on Youtube which is the one that is most familiar on this side of the pond, and was horrified to realise that they play a glaringly wrong chord on the record. on the line "why don't you give us a break", assuming the Key it is being sung in is F, then the chord on "break" should most definitely be an A major. On the record however, they just keep playing F. |

Subject: Don't Jump Off The Roof, Dad From: GUEST,TrevorBradbeer Date: 11 Nov 01 - 06:02 PM Hi, I'm trying to find out more about the song with the following chorus (or it may indeed be the whole song!).
Don't jump off the roof, Dad It might be folk, or it might turn out to be music hall, but if anyone can fill in on extra lyrics (and a tune for the verses if there are any) I would be most grateful. You can reach me on trevorbradbeer@ntlworld.com Thanks, Trev. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Don't Jump Off Roof, Dad (Kie From: Lonesome EJ Date: 08 Sep 01 - 04:57 PM There's no thread like an old thread! Thanks Malcolm Douglas. I used to love that song and couldn't remember all the words. My dad, being a gardener in his spare time, was an easy target! I take it that you are all in the U.K.? I'm a homesick English person and I enjoy all the U.K. threads tremendously. LEJ's wife |

Subject: Don't Jump Off Roof, Dad (Kiellor) From: GUEST,Genie Date: 08 Sep 01 - 04:07 AM Garrison Keillor sang an old camp song, called "Don't Jump Off Of The Roof, Dad," on one of his Father's Day shows--but he added more verses to make it a more complete song. I was not able to tape the show (originally aired in about 1999 but rebroadcast 2 or 3 weeks ago), so I wonder if anyone knows the song he sang and can post it. [The recent thread about "Songs about Mother and Father" reminded me that I want to learn this song. Genie |
