Subject: RE: Come along, come along me jolly brave boys From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 03 Feb 98 - 07:15 PM You probably heard Great Big Sea's fairly recent version, but I can't remember if it is on their self-titled first CD or their second, called Play. (My CD's are packed up at the moment for reasons I won't get into.) A nicer version is on the CD Wave Over Wave by Newfoundlander Jim Payne and Irishman-transplanted-to-Newfoundland Fergus O'Byrne. O'Byrne sings the version on that CD. It has more "bottom" than the GBS version, IMHO. There is a song on the Ewan McColl/A.L. Lloyd CD of sea songs, Blow Boys Blow, which bears some resemblance to this song, only the sailor is a tad more drunk and disorderly, and flinging things about. (Can't recall the name, and the CD's are packed up.) These CD's (except the McColl/Lloyd one) should be available at http://www.bpm.on.ca , where there is a listing of the tracks on all CD's for sale. |

Subject: RE: Come along, come along me jolly brave boys From: Bruce O. Date: 02 Feb 98 - 12:11 PM That's one the Warner's collected in 1940. Words and music are in Anne Warner's 'Traditional American Folk Songs' #71, p. 175. It's called "The Jolly Roving Tar". |
Subject: Come along, come along me jolly brave boys From: RonU Date: 02 Feb 98 - 11:28 AM I've heard the song several times - my really bad hearing prevents me from making out all the words so don't laugh. Among the words are "come along, come along me jolly brave boys", and "Get up (shut up ?)Jack, John sit down" I know someone out there has the name of the tune, etc. Who will be first? Thank you. RonU. |
