Unfortunately, the "Digitrad and Forum Search" hasn't been updated for months, so a lot of recent things can't be found through it.  In addition to the method Mark describes, you can also find it via the old "Forum Search" which you'll find in the drop-down box at the top of this page, though both these will only work if you can remember at least part of the thread name.

Click here for a thread that discussed the song and has the lyrics. If that's not the one you want, let "us" know!

If you're looking for an old thread, and know some of the words in the thread title, you can put those words in the little box that says "Filter", set the "Age" to whatever look-back interval seems reasonable, and hit "Refresh": you'll see a (very) truncated list of threads that should include the one you want.

If you're not sure of the thread title, or just want to see if there is any info on Mudcat about a particular song or topic, use the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box. Happy haunting!

Aloha,
Mark

I am sorry to be a nuisance but some time ago I asked for help with this song. Someone kindly provided a link for the lyrics but I have lost it. As I am useless at finding things on the web, could somebody please give me the link again. Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for this thread, it has made me fish out and listen to an old favourite LP. My copy is the Complete Mr. Fox, which contained both the band's LPs - Mr. Fox and The Gypsy both recorded in the early 1970s. I first heard the recordings around 1976, and when I later saw the double LP on sale bought my own copy.
As a response to this thread I decided to transcribe the song, but before I got round to the job some words had already been posted. I lifted Clansfolk's transcription and edited in Malcolm Douglas's corrections. I then read the lyrics whilst listening to the recording and spotted a couple of discrepancies which I have altered.
The following should be an accurate set of words :-

   THE HANGED MAN
    by Bob Pegg
(Recorded by Mr Fox on the album Mr Fox)

When I was a young man I used to dress so neat
Many hearts beat faster as I walked down the street
Then as I grew older the women had their fill
'Til the only heart that beat was mine as I came down the hill

Chorus
Walk in a valley that never saw the sun
Step by the stones where the icy waters run
Stand in a church where the village choir once sang
And roll along the pathway where the dead man used to hang

You take the road, the road you took before
The one by the rocks where the river leaves the moor
I'll take the road where the hill and forest meet
Where the fallen flowers hide the stones that wait to trip your feet

Chorus

The trees of the forest the rocks all around
Saw me swing my haversack as I raced gaily down
The badger in the bushes the fox in his lair
Heard me give a whoop and cry as I fell through the air

Chorus

Waking in the forest beneath the spreading pine
I saw my body hanging like a shirt upon a line
Vines crept up my fingers where they had come to rest
And in my open mouth the wild bees came to build their nest

Chorus

Many ages later the village people came
Took me from my resting place and tied up my remains
In an old sheep blanket they bore me down the hill
My corpse is in a far off grave but I remain here still

Happy Singing
Geoff the Duck!

My transcription was not from the Record/CD but from a session back in the late 60's early 70's and may not be exactly the same as the recorded version - some words may have been mis-read from the drunken scrawl(Not mine!!!)

I'll most likely stick with the words I know (sung too many times for too long to change)but I will add an ammended version to my archives - funny enough although the original copy I was given has "Beasts" written down I have always sung "bees" - as it made more sense to me.

The time change in the chorus must be fun to program into midi! - when we recorded it in '75 we managed to obtain a great portive organ sound on the chorus using a very old "portable" mains powered reed organ.

cheers,

Pete -

PS - anyone in the Radio Lancashire area of England - we'll be going out on air live at about 14.50 bst this afternoon and there's an montage on Singleton clogger sometime between 15.00 - 15.30 from their outside broadcast unit

A few minor corrections to Clansfolk's transcription:

Verse 1, line 3:  Then, as I grew older, the women had their fill

Chorus:  Walk in a valley...
line 4:  Though stroll makes perfectly good sense, it's actually roll.

Verse 2, line 2:  ...where the river leaves the moor
line 3:  I'll take the road...
line 4:  Where the fallen flowers...

Verse 4, line 4:  ...the wild bees came to build their nest.

Verse 5, line 4:  ...a far-off grave...

The original sleevenotes commented:

Separated from his companions, a hiker in the Yorkshire Dales falls down the side of a hill and is killed.

I'm working on a transcription of the tune, but the phrasing is a bit of a bugger.  More later.

I've got a vinyl copy of 'The Complete Mr Fox' - not got round to taping it and putting it in the Mudcat auction yet - but I will eventualy - honest! I wouldn't DREAM of copying it of course as that would be a breach of copyright but if anyone would like to contact me personaly I am sure we can come to some arrangement;-) Either here or at dpolshaw@ntlworld.com. The vinyl does have Mendle on as well, Malcolm.

I always found the Hanged Man a very spooky song but absolutely right for the Mr Fox style. Must say my favourite is still The Gypsy - though I always have a soft spot for the original 'folk rap' on Aunt Lucy Broadwood!

If anyone else knows the album can they tell me if the refrain in The Dancing Song (I think that's the one I'm thinking of anyway) is actualy the Jenny Lind Polka or is it just very similar?

Cheers

DtG

It's The Hanged Man, written by Bob Pegg (c. 1970), as Guest Bob, who knew what he was talking about, said in the first place.  As I said, I'll deal with it in the next few days unless somebody else wants to do it sooner.

The Bob Pegg song was called "The Hanging Man" from the first Mr. Fox album. I also have it on The Complete Mr. Fox. Sorry, tried to write the words down (I used to sing the song a lot), but discovered there were too many holes in the memory. Would rather get you the correct ones, than not.

Alex, that is the title that R. J. Elliot recorded...of course, we can't be sure it is the same song.

Are we sure that that's the name of the song? Can you provide us with some sample lyrics?

Do you know who performed it and/or what album it's on?

Alex

Are you looking for the words and/or music, or a recording?  The two Mr. Fox albums were re-released together on CD a few years ago (titled The Complete Mr. Fox, but annoyingly lacking Carole's Mendle).  It should still be available.  If you just want the words, I'll sort them later in the week, with a midi of the tune, too, if I have time.
