Subject: RE: Northern Alliance From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 Sep 01 - 02:25 PM Well, they weren't all against the Russians, since the regime the Russians were supporting actually had quite a lot going for it, especially if you were a woman or liked to have the odd drink, particularly in the wake of what came after: "It was fine when the Russians were here," laughs Hawani, a former cobbler now commanding the airport defence unit against the Taliban on the other side of the runways. "The Taliban are pricks. When the Russians were here, we could drink if we wanted to. Now under the Taliban, if you drink you get your head cut off." (that's from the lead story in yesterday's Guardian (London)
Today's lead story is also about what's happening there in the north of Afghanistan.

Subject: RE: Northern Alliance From: kendall Date: 25 Sep 01 - 01:08 PM It's my understanding that Bin Ladan has made enemies way before this lashup, and, the Northern Alliance are upset at his twisting of the Koran. They want him out. Not only because of his actions, but, they must know that the Taliban stands pretty much alone in this mess. Dont know if they fear us or not. They didn't fear the Russians. |

Subject: RE: Northern Alliance From: Troll Date: 25 Sep 01 - 10:37 AM Probably a bit of both. And it wouldn't be so much "moral" grounds as intertretation of the Koran. The Taliban are strict fundamentalists while the Northern Alliance is a bit more moderate. I'll se if I can find out maor. troll |

Subject: Northern Alliance From: GUEST,Ali Kamal Date: 25 Sep 01 - 10:29 AM Pardon me if this question has already been addressed elsewhere. Does anyone have any INFORMED insight into the Northern Alliance in Afgahnistan. Are they opposed to the Taliban on moral grounds, or are they just mad because they were left out? |
