After all is said and done, this series will be resolved in the Yankees favour because they have one of the best closers in baseball history, Mariano Rivera, and the D'Backs do not have a guy who can close out a game. Too bad because iffy pitching, in this case the bullpen, can break many a heart, especially in the desert. Finally, baseball has done themselves great harm by starting the games and 8:30 EST and a generation of kids, not to speak of adults are in bed, missing a pretty exciting World Series.

Why wouldn't they take it seriously. I got this story from a reliable source. The next the you will be telling me is that Bush also didn't get a little action from that Yankees bar girl and thus give new meaning to the concept of the Seventh Inning Stretch.

hell yes I like to party. In fact, i am now putting a pretty good dent in the fifth of scotch that I keep in my office. i never understood why people criticized bush for liking his whiskey and cocaine. Anyone who doesn't drink or do some recreational drugs is too much of a tight ass to run the country. I would rather have a booze hound in charge then some puss who claims to have not inhaled. give me a friggin break.

What's the big deal with calling it the World Series. That's like bitching about World War Two. The fact of the matter is that the entire world was not involved, so why call it a world war. Get a life... On another note, I heard that Bush really raised hell at the World Series game. He allegedly drank 11 cups of beer and needed physical assistance from Secret Service agents to leave the stadium.

Ding dang the fling flang! If only the D'backs had been able to take advantage of the situation in the top of the FIRST inning last night (bases loaded, one out), they wouldn't be in this mess now! Ah well, water under the bridge and all that. I still say Arizona takes it in 7.

Starting Schilling worked out great, pulling him , however was a huge mistake! He'd only thrown 80-some pitches and still looked pretty strong to me. The problem in my opinion, is that Brenly has been thinking about Game 7 ever since Game 1 was over. Not a huge vote of confidence for your team.

You can't BEG the Yankees to beat you!

The Yankee bats have indeed gone south, but they won't stay there too long. Bringing Schilling back on 3 days rest will probably work out, since he is so dominant right now and didn't even get winded in game 1, but that practice has never worked in the Series, and the Bronx is no place to gamble.

Thanks for the thought, Doug, but alas, no $100 this time. Maybe tonight? The D'backs would have to win 11-3... or the Yanks 3-1 (though I'm not rooting for the Yankees; I'd like to see the National League team win! Designated hitters, my eye!)

BTW I agree, 2-1 ain't overwhelming... but the noise at Yankee Stadium is.

Spaw, sounds like "shinty" which is an Irish game, basically a cross between hockey and broadsword-fighting.

I always thought cricket was a boring game. Then I went to the States, and watched baseball on the TV. Oh yeah, it's so fast-moving, and exciting, and SNORE! Wuh, wassat? Oh, did I fall asleep there? Oh, sorry - did I miss anything? Oh, stupid question really.

I'll say the Diamondbacks will take it in 7 (actually, I'm hoping it'll go more than 4 games so that I can watch former Philadelphia Phillie Curt Schilling pitch one more time!).

I'm with SeanM: it would be too trite for New York to win. I noticed some of that triteness during the Miss America pageant, where both Miss New York and Miss Washington DC were finalists, though fortunately neither one won the crown. I say "fortunately" because Miss NY didn't sing well and because both of them answered some basic civics quiz-questions incorrectly.

Speaking of pageants, and of arrogance in nomenclature (such as the "World Series" for a North American baseball playoff), what about the "Miss Universe" pageant? I've never seen Miss Mars or Miss Neptune compete in it, much less Miss Alpha Centauri...

Once upon a time on "ABC's Wide World of Sports" I saw an English game called "Bats" I think??? Man oh man oh Maneschevitz. THAT was the most violent crap I ever saw in ANY sport. It was a mixture of field hockey, soccer, and cricket or something. Played at a furious pace, I saw some poor SOB get whacked with one of the bat things and knocked cold...and they just left him lying there and tripping over his conked-out ass and all til some kind of halftime came and they drug him off the field. I guess it has no injury timeouts or something. Takes a "real man" to play that sucker.......or a real idiot (often one and the same).

The music tonight was great - Ray Charles opening with "America the Beautiful", and even opening it with the second verse that the crowd was rather befuddled listening to. Great stuff.

Emmylou seemed to be beset by technical difficulties. From what I saw, it seemed she attempted to adjust the vocal mic, and had problems requiring her to hold it for the remainder of the performance. She DID try strumming once or twice at the beginning, but the mic kept slipping out of position.

At the very least, it was a creditable example of the 'happens to the best of us' cliche...

Oh... as to John in Hull's long ago question... In Aussie football, rugby and the like, there's a LOT of contact. But the game's designed to be a very free moving, fast paced open game. The contacts will occasionally be VERY harsh and crushing, but for the most part it's openfield tackles, scrums and the like. US football, on the other hand, is designed to HURT the other player. As a defensive player, you're out to take the other side down as quickly and effectively as possible - not avoid them, eliminate them.

Thus, padding becomes useful.

Personally, I'm not much of a fan of either sport. I'm nominally rooting for Arizona in the games, mainly because it'd just be TOO DAMNED TRITE for NY to win. I want reality to be reality, not some sappy made for TV ratings tear jerker. As it is, I get the feeling from watching some of the interviews with Seattle (the primary TV viewer in the household is a MAJOR sports addict) that they more or less decided that the Yankees not only might win, but should win. Watch the interview with the GM after the first game in NY. That was not a man expecting to win, or even to put up a good fight.

Oh well. I'll go back to my hockey, now. Go Ducks! Breathe that rarified non-cellar air!

M

Sorry I missed Emmylou!! I caught a couple of innings with Wayne in between meal courses. What a meal though!! Steamed mussels in garlic butter, spring greens salad with sour cream bleu cheese dressing, scratch made French Onion Soup with two swiss cheeses, a nice Merlot, 1" Rib-Eyes just seered on the grill, twice baked potato, steamed asparagus with Hollandaise, scratch pumpkin pie (real punkin!) with whipped cream, vailla ice cream with dark chocolate sauce, a Kona blend coffee. and shot of triple sec. I didn't give a crap who won!

What I did see of Randy Johnson was overpowering. How can such a big, lanky, guy have such a compact motion with both power and control? Even better, what a great throwback to see a pitcher finish a game! Did I hear 11 K's and 11 ground ball outs? How can you beat that kind of pitching?

But now we go to the Bronx...............

Bob: I'm a real Emmy Lou fan, but I was a bit disappointed. I suspect we didn't hear all that she performed ...at least out here. She came out with her guitar, but didn't strike a string. Why bring the guitar out if you're not going to play it? Did we miss something? She also sounded a bit nervous and tentative to me but that may be just because I have old ears.

I'm sure, though, when these country boys get to the big city and see all those tall buildings it will be a different story. They'll probably be so awed at playing at Yankee Stadium, I'll be surprised if they even suit up! They may just forfiet the games.

I hope you and your wife had a great anniversary dinner!

If I were your Secret Santa, I would regale you with Yankee paraphernalia - cap, T-shirt. bat...Instead, I will simply offer you a night at Shea Stadium with my beloved Mets when you visit the Colonies next.

Ya' know Kendall, that's the whole thing in a nutshell. A lot of sports have little interest for me anymore and iot seems the further removed I am from playing them, the less my interest. I don't know why that is as I see a lot of guys older than I am going batshit over some team or sport. I suppose for me that I reach a point where I can no longer live vicariously through the players and the whole thing gets really boring.

Then again, there are some sports I have never liked or even seen a point to, but that's a matter of taste.

Say, weren't the Yankees down 2-0 in the playoffs? Uh-huh..........Oh well, ya' never know Doug......Just keep your "boys" supplied with Geritol and maybe they can pull it off..........

Well, Doug, As we told when we first got the membership, 53 is a couple and when it is Bob he signs his name and when it is me, I sign 'Glenda'. Read the signatures! We have NOTHING to hide!! We even have tried to make friends in Mudcat but both of us have received quite a bit of criticism.

However, we still keep coming back anyway! Sometimes it is enjoyable others it sort of stings, but so what life isn't always sweet. Sometimes we have to accept some put downs or just give up and we don't give up easily.

What the Hull is an arese??

McG, some girls do play football here, but mostly in lower levels such as high school and youth football, the college and pro games are very rough, and size matters. American football players are very heavy and muscular, and enjoy nothing better than contact.

I wonder what Thady Quill would think of it all.

I thought "world series" could refer to any sport, so long as it was only played in America and a few neighbouring states.

Maybe the Gaelic Athletic Associaiton should stop calling its big championship the All Ireland, and call it a World Series instead. And the Australians could do the same with Rules Football. And the Japanese could have a World Series Sumo championship... Great games all.

And so is Baseball. But I don't think I could ever take to that game where they have the squads of fellas dressed as Stormtroopers on shore leave from the Death Star. Too staccato, no flow to it that I can see. The diametrical opposite of Rules and Gaelic football. (But hurling is the greatest of all.)

Incidcetally, most of the other football codes are played by women as well - I'm not sure about Aussie Rules, but the others all are. So is there a woman's version lf American Footbvall?

(To give us a musical drift - after all, this thread wasn't labelled as BS - there was a thread a few months back "Sporting hero songs?" Anyone got any songs to add to that?)

Doug, the time aint coming! The Big Unit will face his former team where he became a star and lose.
Though if you think about it, Houston is team that really got screwed on that trade. I mean, they lost Freddie Garcia who's become an ace, John Halama, and short stop Carlos who's last name I cannot spell but is a solid player. Then Randy Johnson walked to the Dimond Backs.

I heard somewhere that the series was first sponsored by a Newspaper called the New York World. Thus, it became known as the "World" series. I don't know if this is true.

Jon Freeman, I agree that Aussie Rules is a great game to watch, and i find Union more entertaining to League.
Have you seen Gaelic Football, & if so what dis you think?
There's also a "hybrid" game between Gaelic & Aussie Rules. Three games are played each year so that the Gaelic & Aussie Rules players have a chance to compete internationally.

I always did in the 80's and 90's when they never got anywhere. Why not now? On that note, the Sonics will suprise everybody to win the NBA finals this year. Okay, so that's a bit farther fetched. 53, I am English although I have lived more years in Wales than England and I'm in England now - all the UK...

Don, I woould say to me that baseball reminds me of the school game rounders (but I don't dispute the skill). Of the hitting bat with a ball game my favourite is cricket - a sport that many over here find boring. It is tactical but the same teams of 11 just keep on going... (see below)

Soccer doesn't do much for me these days but my interest comes and goes.

Of the more American style football games, I prefer to watch rugby union (even if fitnness levels and some would argue skill may not be as high as the leauge variety) to its rival. The most fascinating game to me is Australian rules - it really does look a good one.

I'm afraid from my perspective, the American game is just too much, "stop, weve been going 1 minute, let's discuss tactics for 1/2 hr, change players aroud so we have a side devoted to that next 15 seconds play", etc. to hold any real appeal to me. I'd rather see one team battle it out with few stops and starts.

I have always wondered at the gall of calling it the world series when until recently only US teams played it. Canada does a great job of representing the rest of the world but until its a ball game tween Argentina and Sri Lanka, It ain't no world series.

There are lots of Brits that feel that baseball is a provincial little game require no great skill. There are just as many Yanks who feel that Soccer(Football)is dull and played mainly by drunks who run. Oh well.
