Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: GUEST,John Date: 13 Feb 02 - 05:39 PM Kitty, I bought Hard Season by Mick Ryan and Pete Harris based on a review I read. I then went to the Wild Goose web site and decided to try Ian Giles based on the few songs listed there. Next round I'll give your CD a go if it is still available where I shop, Elderly Instruments. Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 Feb 02 - 07:55 PM John - don't feel bad about preferring revival singers. Here in the UK, most source singers were past their prime by the time they were collected (just look at the notes for the Voice of the People series). Doug Bailey, who runs Wild Goose Studios (which produced The Amber Triangle) isn't particularly into source singers (and he's recording for the joy of it not for a living), but he has recorded Roy Harris and Mick Ryan (and me, so I'd better confess an interest here). Moira Craig was discovered by Jerry Epstein at the launch of the Roy Harris CD and has since toured the US - she's a great singer especially of Scottish songs but sings contemporary songs too. Graham Metcalf isn't just a vocalist but has recorded "Songs from Yorkshire and other civilisations". To add to Dick's list of British revival voices; Ron Taylor, Eileen Pratt (both of Regal Slip, although Ron was also in the Songwainers). Kitty

Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: Mr Red Date: 11 Feb 02 - 07:28 PM He was at Cheltenham festival with Magpie Lane, doing their early Englishy stuff, I was too busy at sessions and dance so missed them. I have the CD but can't remember all of it. Thanks for the reminder. |

Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: GUEST,John Date: 11 Feb 02 - 04:48 PM Thanks for the replies. I've ordered The Amber Triangle, Fellside's Voices In Harmony, and Dan Milner's book A Bonnie Bunch of Roses, that should keep me occupied for a while. I guess I've gone from an old-time country kick to an olde country kick. John |

Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: Cllr Date: 11 Feb 02 - 03:13 AM Ian Giles is an excellent singer and the album is superb and there is some good support from vocalists Graham Metcalf and Moira Craig (Moira is a wonderful traditional scottish singer)Cllr |

Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: GUEST,John Date: 11 Feb 02 - 01:15 AM Dick, Thanks for the response, I am finally getting over the guilt of preferring revivalists over source singers. I recently got hold of Fellside's Flash Company CD set and it reminded me how much I enjoy vocal music fom the British Isles that seems to have been overshadowed by Irish ensemble recordings in recent years. (Geez, I am trying hard to say that in a non-inflammatory way.) John |

Subject: RE: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: dick greenhaus Date: 11 Feb 02 - 12:05 AM A nice CD. You might also listen to CDs by Brian Peters, Dave Burland, Kevin Mitchell, Dave Webber, Alan Bell, Matt McGinn, Martin Wyndham-Read, Roy Bailey, Chris Foster, John Tams, Vin Garbutt----there are literally hundreds, even if you wish to restrict yourself to Brit revivalists. |

Subject: Ian Giles: Amber Triangle From: GUEST Date: 10 Feb 02 - 11:26 PM Just wondering if anyone could share an opinion on this CD, I'm trying to branch out a bit in my purchases from the old reliables of English folk, such as Martin Carthy or Nic Jones. Thanks, John |
