I have a vague memory that back in January somebody was looking for a videotape of this concert. It wasn't on the PBS website, but I sent a request to the PBS station here and just got a message that they've located a copy, which is available for a $120 pledge to the station. If anybody is interested, send me a PM and I'll give you the details.

WHAT ? It's not on MPBN ? Someone tell me I am incorrect ! I have my suspicions... the sched says Lawrence Welk from 1700 to 2000h. Now, I could take a good Bluegrass show that long, but not Larry. three hours of Larry ? On a pledge weekend ? Followed by three or four hours of Red Green ? Hey, don't get me wrong. I think Red is great, and he's a Canuck, but three or four hours in a row ?

Any o you Maine fellahs got a propah schedule to confirhh with ?

The good thing about fads is that they do come & go.
I find the whole bandwagon mentality a bit humorous but there will be a few folks that aquire a genuine interest in traditional music because of it.

It was because of things that I'd discovered in mainstream media that I searched for and discovered things that you'll rarely find in mainstream media.

Bonnie & Clyde,The Beverly Hillbillies,sparked an interest in BG music for me,& in turn I found out about great musicians like Ralph Stanley,Don Reno & others.
It was rock bands like Cream,Rolling Stones & others that sent me searching for Robert Johnson,Howlin Wolf,Muddy Waters,etc.

All in all, I'd say we're pretty safe. Folk,blues,bluegrass music has many times been dropped into the pot with popular/commercial/mainstream music. It always manages to rise to the top & climb out to safety. Good thing too,I can't afford those designer overalls!

I saw the show last Monday night. About half of it here in L.A. was pledge breaks, so it seemed somewhat sparse pickings (so to speak!). I myself was most impressed with Del McCoury, who I hadn't seen in years. Guess I'm a traditionalist -- his voice and style just wows me! And of course Stanley. You newgrass fans will like the (one) Nickel Creek performance, and Alison Kraus (sorry, she's just too mild for my taste). The finale with everybody jamming, was a gas.

About the banjos at garage sales (how past experience does give us perspective!) Interesting articles in our local papers in the past few days about how, despite the record selling 4 million copies, country radio continues to stick to its slick diet of Shania Twain, Faith Hill, etc. Country music today doesn't even want a working-class audience anymore -- the target audience, it said, is women in their 20's-30's, the suburban BMW crowd. Here in L.A., it said, "listeners rejected the 'O Brother' soundtrack, saying it didn't mesh with the Brooks & Dunn, Tim McGraw and Dixie Chicks in heavy rotation." Yuk. But a lot of people think it still may crack radio. Maybe, as some of you have said so wisely, it will pick up faithful new fans the way every trend does ("Dueling Banjos," etc.). Funny though -- they can listen to and love "A Man of Constant Sorrow," and yet not make the association with other music like that, or move on to it.

Durn it! It broadcsat here in the St. Louis area last night and my reception of our local PBS station was the worst it has even been. Some folks at work and my ladyfriend saw it and said it was incredible. Friday and Saturday, Webster University in St. Louis is showing "Down from the mountain" starts at 7PM each night. My ladyfriend's brother was supposed to tape on A&E. I sure hope he did because we can't make it to the screening at Webster U.

Although I've always hated the notion, Marshal McLuhan, I now have to admit, was correct- The medium is the message. The PBS bluegrass special- We used to have that kind of stuff everyday, and almost all day, on WAMU FM (from Washington, DC), but now, just on weekends, because its not as popular as the current fad, the talk show, the ultimate audience participation format (the bluegrass is still available through your computer from their website)

No. People who are just jumping on the O Brother bandwagon will soon move onto the next fad. But it will make for some lifelong Bluegrass fans, and there's nothing wrong with that. It happened when people discovered Flatt & Scruggs because of the Beverly Hillbillies, again with Bonnie & Clyde and again with Deliverance. Apparently it was Duelling banjos from Deliverance that inspired Bela Fleck to start playing banjo.

The great news is that you should be able to get some great deals on banjos, mandolins & Fiddles in about six months to a year when the bandwagon jumping musicians discover something else.

We rarely get shows of this nature in their entirety here in NJ. They're usually only broadcast during the PBS pledgedrives. I see it listed as a 1 1/2 hour show here,so I'm certain at least 30 minutes of that will be for pledgebreaks.

Oh well,gotta get it any way we can. PBS does some pretty good stuff afterall.

I also notice that CMT is airing a bluegrass special on Sunday 3/10,at 4 PM.( If you can stand all the commercials)

I taped it. It was a great show. For me, the big surprise was Vince Gill- he did a nice job.

Locally, they followed the show with a repeat of 'Down from the Mountain', so there were two solid hours of good music.

I really like the way they're blending the traditional with the contemporary bluegrass today.
Nickel Creek being a perfect example of just that. And let's face it,Chris Thile is "THE WIZ KID"on that mando.

With the exception of Earl Scruggs,I've had the chance to see all of these artists in concert at some point.
I'll finally get my chance in April at Merlefest.

Alison Krauss,Nickel Creek & Patty Loveless will also be there.

Can't hardly wait!

Sounds like a show I need to see/hear! I saw Nickel Creek on the show before and I was amazed. These are really talented and creative youngsters - what a great sound. Skaggs, Gill, Krauss? Well these are just long time favorites of mine.
