Christina Rossetti must have known Spaw - did she not write a beautiful poem 'who has seen the wind'?, just right for him.....

And since when has St Patrick had a whole week dedicated to him? It's bad enough with Guinness trying to get us to celebrate St Paddy's Eve..... it's impossible to get anywhere in central London today (parade in Trafalgar Square) and I bet poor old George goes past next month without even a mention on the radio, let alone having a tune named after him (Paddy's Vest was on telly this morning.... sorry, St Patrick's Breastplate - despite it being a Pentecost hymn and this being the middle of Lent... the same programe had 'the first Nowell' in it as well!), grumble grumble, whinge whinge....

When I was in high school, my school didn't have any bells. I'm assuming bells ringing to signal the end or beginning of class periods is not unique to the US (please correct me, somebody, if I'm wrong about that). Anyway, not only did we not have the ringing of bells in between class periods, but there were no actual bells anywhere in the school to ring.

We all thought that was pretty cool. Then one year, we got a new principal. There was something about this guy that didn't sit right with most of us. At least those of us who liked not having bells. He assured us that he wouldn't change the "no bells" policy.

Well, the son of a bitch was lying, and he had bells put in when school was out for a break. Some of the students found out about it before the school session resumed, and they stole all of the bells. Every last one. We all thought that was pretty cool, too.

So the silly git had a new set of bells installed in the school. Those were promptly removed by some students as well. For the rest of the time I was at that school, we never had any bells.

Spaw, I just about split my side laughing at that last post. Those are Sewage pipes you've been playin', right? So what style do you use ABS, fiberglass or the traditional cast iron pipes.

Back on the off topic question.... If you mean to say that you feel that the threads about music, as in the technical execution of playing, building, caring for, or obtaining instruments, or some understanding related to those subjects, should be favored over the ponderings bantered about here in seemingly unrelated threads, some of which have been the inspirations for stories and songs, I think you're wasting you're time. Because, as some have already stated, one never knows how and when certain inspirations will arise.

I remember reading an off topic thread a while back about pickles and those posts sparked a brain cell or two (I only have a couple of 'em left roamin' about up? there) about an incident that happened to me with a particularly nasty jar of dills. I ended up writing a post to the thread that turned into, (you guessed it) a song.

I say keep your options open. Inspirational opportunities can sometimes arrive via unusual or unintended means. Be prepared, as best you can, so that when they do poke their way into your brain cells you can recognize them and make the best use of them.

In short (Now there's a concept I should try to grab hold of.) are nonmusical posts and threads less important than the study of musical posts and threads? Should musical threads be given priority at the forum? Given that through these exchanges of nonmusical ideas we can find illumination to express our own experiences in stories, poetry and songs, I say that these posts and threads are just as valuable as those discussing music. Will everyone reap the same benefits from each thread and post musical or not? Of course not. We each have our own unique perspective reflecting our own personal level of understanding about all things. I think the best advice is to stay open to all possibilities and probabilities. Because, hey, it could happen, and it's all good.

The reason I keep coming back here is the diversity of discussion. Wether it's political, humourous or just a bit of banter it's a great slice of life and would be reduced if certain subjects were deemed "off-topic". I love music with a passion and I expect most Mudcatters do likewise but there's a lot of other stuff going on in the world too and it's nice to come here and feel free to express an opinion and hear others. There's plenty of music threads running right now!

I think the answer is 2-0, with Larsen striking out seven batters, including Dale Mitchell on a 2 and 2 count. Sal Maglie took the loss. Hope that helps.

You may also notice that most of the so called off topic threads are heavily visited by those of us who are actually working musicians and not enthusiasts. Now enthusiasts are great, they buy our music... but please stop telling us how to make it... talking the people's biz is a big part of the process. Cheers... HEY SPAW, can we have a rendition of the 1812 overture? Larry

I would suggest that to define what is "off-topic", as you put it, for a folk music forum, you would first have to answer the question, "What IS folk music".

I await your view with 'bated breath...but think of the kittens!!

Well instead of starting another one
can anyone help with this -
Tomorrow I want to send some medication (over the counter painkillers) to a friend in the US. Are there import restrictions on such things or will it be OK? They are Co-codamol and Co-Proxamol tablets
Any help would be appreciated

On the Off Topic issue I would just like to say that I don't visit mudcat that much now as I don't have anything much to ask or add at the moment. Its a great place though.
How is Max bearing up to the cost of hosting the off topic posts about off topic posts?

I've just counted up todays postings 134 of which 24 could be said to be "off topic" thats about 6%.Not realy a problem, and some of these collected a lot of contributions so somebody,s interested.for my self I usualy avoid comenting in the political threads (1) because when I get to read them there huge and most of the stuff I would send has already been said(severel times (2)There's nearly allways some much more iteresting stuff about. PS one of these off topic threads was from someone in desperate need of psicological support and advice, who found it in abundance. This forum is vibrant, alive, and careing PP

JTT says, "politics and music flow back and forth and intermix." Well, yeah! There are innumerable folk songs about the politics of the time when they were written, and I'll bet my guitar-calluses that those songwriters sat around with their pallies and had endless political arguments before and after they put pen to paper. Here, we are doing the same thing on a global level, that's all! I find the political threads fascinating because of the input from people of different nationalities; it puts things into a whole new perspective for me.

You've heard of the concept of the "Global Village"? Think of Mudcat as a Global Greenwich Village.

Larry: Putting spaw's flatulence to an "air"?????? Oh, gawwwwd, that pun "ranks" as one of the most wonderfully horrible music puns ever!!!!!!!

JTT, I went through a sensitive phase regarding the political threads. It just annoyed me that the same people would find a way to re-word the same general stuff over and over again. I was upset at every new thread I saw. I guess I didn't see the discussions as interesting - just an excuse for people to keep on arguing about the Same Old Shit. This bothered me, but obviously the folks who keep doing it enjoy it for some reason.

I quit reading the threads.
For a while, the many new titles bothered me, but I found that after a period of not reading them, they became insignificant.

The problem with "Off Topic" is that I believe even many of the people who say they don't like them rather enjoy certain off-topic topics and have a "trigger" when it comes to others.

Good points. I'm tempted by questions like "Is Bush trying to get us all nuked" (YES, for God's sake - and all to put money in his warmonging pocket), but kind of feel this is meant to be about music, and music gets smothered by all this.

But maybe I'm wrong, and the politics and music flow back and forth and intermix.

Try not to read them and stay on the threads that you find more relevant to you. This subject is nothing new and has been hashed about for a long time. Sometimes the mix becomes lopsided but in the main we tend to self-police the situation. This is an almost totally unpoliced and unmoderated forum and Max has always given it a free rein to develop as it will. Looking about now, I don't find the place too far out of "balance" but if you do, just don't go there. Plenty of threads right now to interest all.

What is on/off topic ? I've put up 3 quizzes, but one was song titles, one musical instruments, & one for St Patrick's day. I've hundreds more, but I feel they'd be far off topic for this forum.
The St Patrick one I consider like the St Pat's jokes, relevant at this time of year, as people 'gigging' this weekend may need something to waste time, either between sets, or while tuning, re-stringing, whatever.
This doesn't mean that I deplore "off topic" threads. I can choose which to read, and stop reading if I'm not interested. The "BS" thread header ('Oxen manure') does help, but I often browse those as well.
As with multi-channel TV sets, YOU retain control of the of button.

I can't see how a question about mini-discs is off-topic here. So far as I am aware the main use people have for mini-discs is playing and recording music.

As for other stuff, there's a long history about that, and it's been argued up and down, and all those arguments are available via the search facilities on the Miudcat, and some of them are good reading. And the bottom line is, discussing politics or anything else here is as valid as in talking about politics in any other café. But it shouldn't get in the way oif the music, and most of the time it doesn't.

I know, I know, I've just posted an off-topic question about how to use a minidisc.

But the political posts are getting too much for me - even though I've been guilty too.

Would others agree that perhaps the moderators should lock off these topics when they happen, and direct people to a political discussion forum?
